He also is a very powerful character (being a Straw Hat, one of the strongest people in the series). However, I agree that he isn't the show's symbol. Nakama is probably the symbol.

This is where it all started for me. My first anime that I seriously watched, it's been about a year and a half since I watched One Piece. I've come to find other genres far more appealing than action adventure. I don't even like the genre anymore. Never even cared for a second about Naruto, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist and so on, and yet I miss One Piece. It has more than anything, great story and some of the best characters in anime. Time to re-watch and catch up.

It's true the art style is hard for some people to get used to, while some people scoff at it at first, but then later on, they can't imagine it being any other way. Some people have said it has a bit of a Disney feel to it. There are also a few characters that are a little on the absurd side, but if you ask me, that is a silly reason to dismiss the whole series over
