Sang this this past Christmas. As far as getting the intervals down, probably the hardest two minutes I've ever sung - (though to be fair, I haven't sung much 20th century, so I'm sure composers like Ligeti are harder).
At the same time, totally worth it. I love this piece. Thanks for posting the video; this and the Trinity College recordings are the best I've heard this piece performed.
I just love the harmonies in this piece. Takes me back to when I sang it in Gloucester Cathedral Choir. It's a shame we can only sing it at Christmas!
Wonderful stuff. On the topic of Jerusalem, do you have a video clip of Stanford's "Pray that Jerusalem". I think it's an absolute little gem of an anthem. I think it's based on the psalm/hymn tune London New.
Brilliant! When was this recording made? I would love to know the names of the altos so I can look for them on further recordings. (especially the bloke with the specs on at 0:54-1:00. His solo on Ubi Caritas was breathtaking).
You should look out for a new CD of Judith Weir Orchestral music that is going to come out I think around the new year in time for the BBC symphony Orchstra weekend of her music in January on the NMC label. They have released a gret 2cd set of her chamber music and they have reissused her stunning opera Blond Eckberg
Verse 3:
The regeand tirrant that in thee rang,
Herod, is exileit and his offspring,
The land of Juda that josit [held] wrang,
and rissin is now thy richtous king.
So he so mychtie is and digne, [worthy]
when men his glorious name does nem,
heaven, erd and hell makis inclyning;
Illuminare Jerusalem.

Verse 2:
With angellis licht in legionis
thou art illuminit all about.
Three kingis of strange regionis
to thee are cumin with lusty rout.
All drest with dyamantis,
reverst with gold in every hem,
sounding attoneis [together] with a shout:
Illuminare Jerusalem.

From a 15th century manuscript:
Verse 1:
Jerusalem rejos for joy:
Jesus, the sterne [star] of most beauty,
in thee is rissin as richtous roy, [king]
fro dirkness to illumine thee.
With glorious sound of angel glee
thy prince is born in Bethlehem
which sall thee mak of thralldome free:
Illuminare Jerusalem.

Very interesting music and wonderful singing. Singing is right for this music.

Does anyone have the lyrics to this?
baldwalrus7 1 year ago
I believe it is old Scottish/ Gaelic or English (?) mixed with Latin, from the Middle Ages.

@EvelynCor
So, to add, it would be hard to find them.
A quick search on Google, though, you can find the english lyrics!

Google doesn't turn up anything, but one site states that it's from a 15th century Scottish manuscript.

At 0:34 do you think the chorister second from the right could be Alex Stobbs? I believe he was in the younger part of the choir..

@chessie273 Yeah, that's him.

Excellent piece, superbly sung. Has anyone here ever seen the score? I'm curious as to how the organ effect is written!
z0tx 2 years ago
@z0tx the organist is required to play on 16" in the manuals with double pedaling on 32".
