What grip do yo uprefer? matched or traditional? I personally am against traditional because I find it inefficient overall, but maybe it's because I'm not that comfortable w/ it yet, and it inherently makes you drop your shoulder, like it seems like you do in this video.
@FeeLtheHertZ idk man.. you might not care for my opinion, but i always play brushes trad grip. its way more comfortable and makes a nicer and more consistant swish for me. im trying to play better traditional with sticks, but so far brushes is easier to do
hahaha, not trying to hate or anything. you are a great drummer. great chops man. im jealous... but @ 1:50 u let ur technique loose and start slicin super hard with ur right hand... just made me laugh thats all. also... i've been watchin a few of your vids. u use a 13" yamaha snare with that yellow hip kit? im interested in the depth and type of wood. maple?
@hintermister Hey man thanks for your comment. The snare I use with the HipGig is a Yamaha Stage custom 5"x13" the wood is Mahagoni mixed with maple I guess???
Just discovered your vids tonight, hats off to you bro, what an excellent player with some serious dedication to his craft. Thanks for the inspiration. Will have to subscribe and see if i can't pick up a few tips here and there....shouldn't be hard from someone as well rounded and skilled as yourself.
i noticed your vater noise guard... are they good?? im planning to buy one... theres no reviews or anything here in youtube about vater noise guard so i cant decide if ill buy or not...
I notice most of your accents with the right hand appear to be rim shots...are you just playing them as you would normally play with a stick or are you using a bit of a whip?
I find that I whip the head with the tip of the brushes more than laying into it and was wondering if that was a bad habit or not.
They're different, and they're challenging to play some patterns authentically but there are so many things you can do with brushes I wouldn't classify them as difficult.
I just started playing with them without any real knowledge of drumming with sticks outside of my natural 4/4 beat.
It's quite tough to get a good tone out of them as they do not bounce back like sticks, you have to manually bring the brush back off the drum. The circular brushing techniques combined with the right hand beats is quite tough to get. I have yet to get it.
In anyones opinion, would a snare a brushes be a good addition to a jamming ring with bongos, guitars, violin and a mandolin?

The Vater Noise Guards are very good, they feel good on toms and cymbals. I highly recommend the VATER NOISE GUARDS.

Anyone know where I can get Regal Tip plastic brushes? They have a wooden handle and plastic strands.
