When I first heard the opening of the Original Signature Tune...it made me think that it was gonna be a VERY serious gig like BLAKES 7 or DOCTOR WHO...especially in juxtaposition to the tune being somehat akin to THE GODFATHER opening, IMO.
I didn't see the promos for RD 1, I just happened to tuen in, & was VERY surprised (and pleased) with what I saw..
Have been a card-carrying, flag-waving fan ever since.
Wish the Naylor HADN'T opted for the 'remastering' gig..
Best theme music ever. The early seasons of RD were quite brilliant; perfect pieces of tragicomedy. A Beckettian drama of stalemate, set against the shocking emptiness of the cosmos, with a bunch of good jokes thrown in. Then someone thought "my, this comedy science fiction show has turned out to be quite unexpectedly successful. Let's give them a proper budget," and it all went downhill from there.
This opening music was epic. Ah, the vastness of space...
There's nothing out there, you know. There's nobody out there. No alien monsters, no Zargon warships, no beautiful blondes with beehive hairdos who say, 'Show me some more of this Earth thing called kissing. There's just Rimmer, Lister, the Cat, and a lot of floating smegging rocks. That's it. Finito.'"
Amazing how this model from the eighties can still completely and totally outdo the up to date computer generated version which I think looks dull and uninspired.
Me too ! :-D But hey, it's a sitcom, that also parodies all kinds of sci-fi clichés. This intro kind of reminds me of the one for Star Trek : The Next Generation, but in a (deliberately) less spectacular fashion, of course... ;-)
What an excellent opening sequence, with the guy painting and everything. I sometimes wish they'd done a series before series one, with the whole crew on board...
This was my favourite opening, thought it was a surprisingly dark one for a comedy. I still get awestruck by the size of the ship, too.

So EPIC and menacing, the best opening to any TV program ever - I could be biased, I am obsessed with RD. I named my dog "Kryten" and everything.

Who else wants to garrotte the one person who dislikes this?

quite a sizable chunk of the budget of the first season went on building the model and doing the 12 fly by shots, apparently

I think that is because this is a ridiculously accomplished model, while very few things are - or STAY - ridiculously accomplished CGI.
If everything is possible, nothing is interesting.
Kizor 2 years ago
@Jownak That's CGI? I always thought it was a physical model that they panned a camera around.
???

@PerfectH it is a physical model lol, there's another intro that's CGI though

I love this opening. It just seems so....I dunno, sober or something. Not really what you'd expect from a comedy.
LordZast 3 years ago 26
@LordZast Indeed, and they should have kept it for latter seasons.

It was Craig Charles in the suit and Lister gets 8 weeks ship painting in Stasis Leak, so it could have been.

I thought it was two weeks.
Rimmer got 8 for insulting the Captain

Oh yeah. Rimmer eventually got 8 years for insulting the chicken suit though.

I like how the Red Dwarf Is big, slow, and Bulky, Not fast and sleek like with regular TV show space ships.
