You, and others, are completely missing the point. The point is that you wouldn't be paying that money to a COMPANY. You are paying the government to do something for you. Why don't you just bad-mouth police, firefighters and libraries while you're at it? You see my point? Instead of paying someone who's out to make a profit, you're paying the government (most likely) the same amount, and they're not after a profit.

I do like Dennis K but I have to respectfully disagree. Basically because rights are something you're born with. They're not something you are given. So to say "the right to healthcare" meaning the right to have healthcare thats paid for by someone else .. meaning its given to you .. No that doesnt make any sense at all. In fact in underscores the fact that you weren't born with it. Healthcare is each indivuals RESPONSIBLITY just like paying your rent, buying groceries, paying for your car etc

No, rights are NOT something you're born with. You DO NOT have the right to life until it's given to you. Nature doesn't give these rights. You have the right (with our constitution) to LIFE. You have to right to not have to die needlessly. And your point about it being a "responsibility" is just plain wrong. You can't help getting sick. It happens.

Actually, he's correct. Rights are something we're born with. Plus, think about it...if rights are something given by the government, they can just as easily be taken away. And a right is a right to action, like speaking, assembling, or bearing arms. Rights are not something that is handed over to me, such as food stamps or health care. And rights are not exercised by taking from one person and giving them to another..that's not a right, since it infringes on the liberty and property of another.

Well, abaddon, whether you're religious or not, if you're a citizen of the United States, you're part of a nation that believes we were born with rights. So it doesn't really matter if you believe this or not, that's how it is in the US. That is the philosophical stance our founders gave us, and if you're not willing to operate under those ideas, then you've completely missed the point of those exalted men and the nation they gave us.

What I said they gave us was a philosophical stance. The rights are ours by birth. The philosophical stance is the framework of thought we rally around in order to discuss these ideas. What you're proposing enables tyrannical government to cut off your individual liberty. And that's something the founders wanted to prevent.

It really doesn't matter if you believe in a deity...you're living in a nation that was formed under this belief and is so written into its founding documents. You couldn't afford comprehensive health insurance if you paid zero taxes. As it is, you probably don't pay any or much income tax. I know, I know, you're probably an internet millionaire- but you know that you aren't. You are going to end up on Medicare if you live long enough. It only makes sense to pay into that system all of your life, instead of paying premiums to private companies only to get dumped when you turn 65.
