So, as you responded to "gunforme", 'noise is not a concern in the reverse gear.'; Does that explain why (usually Asian imports) some vehicles produce a high pitched whining noise when going in reverse faster than 5mph?
@Gordon302 The whining noise you hear in reverse is because reverse is a straight cut gear that meshes with another straight cut gear on the mainshaft. It's straight cut because it must be, so that it can slide on its shaft into the other gear from the side, so it can turn the output shaft backwards. All of the forward gears are helical cut, which is why they don't make that whining sound. They can get away with this because the forward gears are constantly touching.
@gunforme Straight cut are normally stronger but noisy. Helical are normally used in stock trannies because of the reduced noise levels. Often straight cut gears are found in racing trannies as well as the reverse gear in a T5 where noise is not a concern.
thanks i kind of guess it i have another question in the 89 camaro win i shift into 5th gear sometimes it dont go in and other cases it glides in, and when i take it out of 5th i have to shake, pull, or whatever it takes to bring out of the groove from 5th to neutral. Do you think i should just get another boot or what? Thanks for responding and i hope u can help me out
yea i have an 89 camaro with a T5 trans and it keeps popping out of first gear when i give it gas what can i do to solve the problem or should i just do a rebuild
I can get one of these for $150 dollars but the guy said that 2nd gear slips a little? would that be a problem in the transmission or an issue with the clutch? Is that still a good deal and what does a rebuild cost usually. thanks for the info
@carguyzo6 If it's slipping, I would say that's a clutch concern. The price sounds good but that depends on what it came from, V8, 6 cyl., 4 cyl. is it world class or not etc.
I have T5 in my '88 305 GTA (I'm not sure if is it a World Class) and next month I have a plan to raise power on 300 hp or more. Does anybody knows how much power T5 can handle?? Thanks!
I have a t-5 out of a 93 mustang lx and 2 of the gears have a couple of teeth broken off. Are there any manuals or diagrams on the internet that would help me identify what they are so I can replace them?
What happens if the synchron goes bad or you shift way too fast, the sliding gear rotates at at different with 2nd gear (for example). Will the synchron prevents engaging the gear or we will grind the dog gear?
Whelp... I got it looked at finally, and apparently it was so bad in there that it would've cost more to rebuild it than to buy a unit from the boneyard, which was $700. He said a lot of the rings and other stuff were pitted, shift fork was broken, synchros were toast, bearings needed replacement... what a mess! So after the tranny replacement, clutch, resurfacing flywheel, replacing the rotted flow tubes, replacing s. plugs, a few other things too, and all the labor, came to $1995. Ouch.
@VICTOR400HP Of course, the clutch doesn't care what the 5.0L came out of. Remember to install a pilot bearing. Remember also the 94 T5 has a deeper bellhousing therefore your shifter may not line up with the 89 Mustang's hole in the floor.
I just lost 4th gear in my t45 due to a missed shift. I can still get it into gear if I rev-match it perfectly, but otherwise it simply will not stay in gear. As soon as I let out the clutch, it will just pop out. According to an expert, he said I either bent the shift fork or cooked the 3-4 synchro. Do you agree?
@xilix If it pops out when it's already engaged in gear then either you bent the fork and the slider is barely engaging the fourth gear dogs and when pressure is applied, the slider is pushed off fourth gear, or the fourth gear dogs are chewed to hell. Syncro would not cause the slider to pop off the gear, it would only cause trouble with engaging the gear. The syncro may also be bad but is not causing the trans to pop out of gear.
@xilix one miss shift shouldnt cause a gear to just stop working but you could have rounded the slider and the dog teeth so bad that they wont mess at any speed but the correct shit rpm. and as far as it poping out of gear, the shift, if bent can only be bent two directions left or right so if it wont engage in 4th then it shoud engage in 3rd very easy or even with out trying, the fort is made out of either (maybe)steel or aluminum which both are easy to bend
i have a 93 mustang 5.0 my reverse is gone. i drained some of the fluid and i see it has little fine shavings in it. any ideas what has happened? everything else works fine i even race it from time to time when i put it in reverse its like its not going in gear at all and the motor doesn't load up any
Where can I purchase the DVD? I am ready to rebuild my transmission and have already overhauled the engine. Is it difficult to rebuild? This is unknown territory for me. So was the engine at first but after rebuilding a 351w, i have taken on other rebuilds....289, 302, 350. I have been wanting to try this so if this DVD is a good starting point I would like to purchase it. Thanks
wow this is whats happening right now to my 88 mustang every gear is good only 2nd is bad .....when i go to shift into 2nd it grinds real hard to even put it in but every other gear is fine is this what i have to do?...or rebulid everything ? please respond
A little whine in the lower gears is not always signs of a problem. The pocket bearing between the input and output shafts is not turning in fourth gear. Therefore if that bearing is bad, it would make noise in every gear except 4th. It would make noise in 5th but might be less so.
Hmmm well it is in 1st through third, and gets progressively worst, with third being the loudest by far, then is completely gone in fourth and fifth. Now it was ran low on fluid because of the previous owner being a moron.. so I am sure that had something to do with it. Just curious if you had any idea of what to expect
Yes, running a T5 low on fluid can sometimes damage so many parts that you might have a throw away. A complete disassembly is the only way to find out.
i have an 87 mustang gt in automatic. slips when i go into overdrive only on the highway. is this a rebuild situation or a tuneup situation? any ideas would be appreciated.
I just got an svo with the t5 1st gear is fine when I shift to 2n it just won't even go into 2nd have to go to 3rd so I would guess my syncros 2nd is out let me know if this sounds correct thanks.
I think it would be best to get a donor stick shift Mustang and remove the pedal assembly, clutch cable, shifter and crossmember. The driveshaft may be needed as well.
Cool! Video really helped me. Seem the synchronizer and clutch do very similar jobs. Any idea why the clutch is not used to just get the input shaft up to speed, then lock in with a gear?
I have a question I got a 2001 Ford Mustang GT with and I wanna do a tranny swap auto/manuel its got a AODE Tranny and I was wondering which tranny to go with this set up I heard the Tremec 3650, T5, or something else I would love your info. it would be helpful!!! Thank You!!!
2001 Mustangs came with a T5, T45 or 3650. I believe the T5 was only in V6 cars, The T45 was on the 4.6L 2V and the 3650 used in the Cobra. I would think the T45 would be the easiest swap however the 3650 is a stronger unit but it has a hydro. clutch.
GREAT VIDEO! I just ordered the full dvd and the 8.8" DVD also. Can't wait to see them. Why can't all instrucional videos be this good? You have great explanations and video possisions. I'll spread the word on the mustang forums I use. Good Luck BADSHOE!

@Gordon302 Maybe, and understand that in reverse, there's gears turning with a reverse rotation as well as a lowered ratio.

@07jdubb You'll just have to make a test. Maybe remove the boot and drive. If the problem is still there, it's overhaul time.

07jdubb 7 months ago
@07jdubb You might have a shifter boot keeping the shifter from going all the way into gear. If that's ok, the problem is on the inside.
