Yeah, this and Richter/Leinsdorf/Chicago are the two greatest Brahms 2nd performances I have ever heard, certainly the most powerful I have heard. Both great, with Richter perhaps a bit more powerful and Fleischer perhaps a bit more lyrical, but both really phenomenal in their own way. In fact, I remember flying on a coast-to-coast red-eye to SF in the early 70's and listening to this soaring above the Rockies. I was convinced it was Richter, which I knew, only to find out it was Fleisher!

This was actually recorded in 1962 with the Cleveland Orchestra. There was no Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. Having grown up there and studied with the orchestra's great principal oboist, John Mack, I can speak with some authority.
@oboedad55 "58 or ''62, Marc Lifschey was still sitting there, not that I don't think very highly of J. Mack, it's just that when in H.School Marc L. was definitely my hero of heroes. Really wanted to study w/him, but had Zupnik at when at Oberlin. Jim P.
