In my personal experience, I simply established my daily caloric needs and got them from a variety of foods. I ate what I wanted, but made sure that I stayed at my caloric needs for the day. Key for me has been calorie control. I have coupled that with moderately intense exercise and have lost body fat and gained muscle, which is ideal. Perhaps this would probably work for most people? It's really been that simple...no hype, no special diet, just not overeating and exercising, and no exuses!
People don't get fat because of insulin directly, they get fat because of excess calories. That is just the basic laws of physics, no way to get around it. If someone expends 1400 kcals a day, and they take in 1000 calories of donuts and fruit juice.....they will still lose weight.
ONLY IF YOU'RE OBESE, READ THIS: i guarantee you 100% this will work. Follow a strict Paleo Diet, less than 50g total carbs each day, for 4-8wks. you'll reverse your insulin and leptin resistance, and begin to lose FAT steadily (some ppl may not lose weight right away, some will). keep dieting until u reach ideal weight, up unrefined carbs just enough so your weight doesn't rebound. paleo diet/exercise for 6 months more, now you should have reversed your set point, you're a thin person now.
@danhantheman.... There is one problem. After Six months of very low carbs, your carb sensitivity, ability to store glygogen and athletic ability will all be negatively affected.
@trisystem Your athletic ability will only be negatively affected if you don't replace those loss calories from carbs with foods that are high in Fat and/or Protein
@trisystem Really? Because I've been doing the Paleo Diet for three years and my athletic ability is better now than when I was in the military. Could you provide some sort of source on this line of reasoning?
@trisystem not true. For the past year I've followed the low carb/no sugar diet and it has worked tremendously! In one year I went from 185 to 145 pounds.. I don't have to eat less, just eat less carbs. I do Muay Thai kickboxing classes, yoga, run and I drive a bike taxi for a living. I'm 25 years old and I am in the best shape of my life. I credit most of this to Gary Taubes.
What is interesting is that, at stevens, even the women/men he showed that he considered to "not be obese", were not obese but were DEFINITELY not low in body fat. Those smaller people were "technically" not obese. However, I carry bout 11% bf so anything above 17% in my mind is "fat" for a male
He stated, at Stevens, that obesity was a disorder of excess fat accumulation? Ok, this was taken from a researcher before ww2. However, if that is true then what causes excess fat? You see, we still come back to the same basic elements. over eating and non-active lifestyles help to promote excess fat gain.
Not sure you read what I wrote but no one was denouncing the systematic explanation, however more the act which prevents one from shedding said fat, which is sitting idle and not expending the calories taken in. I eat about 7000 calories a day but I also expend nearly that much with my daily training regiments. At this point, I am about 10% bf. If the avg couch potato ate 7000 cals a day, they would be on their way to about 40% bf and 300lbs. This is the context of my comments.
As Taubes explains in his book, obesity is not caused by dietary fat, but high carbs, which cause high insulin levels, which lead to increased hunger, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and possibly certain kinds of cancer. This is why hunter gatherer societies virtually never experienced these diseases, due to their meager carbohydrate intake. Some people can stay slim on high carbs because their bodies have adapted to it. But for those having problem losing weight, a low carb approach is best.
@alphacause , at the same time, there are countless studies showing a correlation between prostate cancer and high fat content diets. Simply put, it is generally about genetics. I can show you 30 people whom I have trained with moderate fat, high carbs, moderate protein and maintain a 13%bf, I can show you people with higher fat, mod carb, and mod protein with the same bf%, so it boils down to the genetics of that person. There are exceptions though, these are the people that mr taubes refers to
@thirtydayshred "there are countless studies showing a correlation between prostate cancer and high fat content diets. Simply put, it is generally about genetics"
The media needs to do more news segments, like this one, on Gary Taubes. His brilliant analysis, in his book "Good Calories, Bad Calories" ,of a mind boggling amount of research, that spans several decades, completely undermines the popular demonization of fat, and the unjustified praise of large amounts of carbohydrates. In my mind that book, and his most recent book "Why We Get Fat" (written in more laymen's terms than "Good Calories, Bad Calories") should be common nutritional wisdom.
I have proof to: I ate high-grain for 18 years. I was thin.
For health.... Neither of those meals is HEALTHY.
Now I'm High-fruit (80/10/10, gorilla diet) and I'm thinner AND healthier.
Why? insulin raising is only a problem if fat is blocking carbs from entering cells. That's why gorillas aren't obese (low-fat).
Health is more than "level of insulin" or ANY numbers. Lack of disease is NOT health. These researchers study beekers(isolating substances) then make these claims........cont
cont........then make these claims of what will happen with our biology.
Then the public gets (stays) confused. Think, peoples: Health is what remains after removing everything else: everything un-natural. The safest bet for health (and weight-loss, and everything) is to eat naturally. Even carnivores don't eat butter and cheese... they eat the intestines 1st, and whats inside.
I’m very worried about his theories. I went on this low carb, high fat diets that he preaches ( i ate lots of cheese) and now my cholesterol is high for the first time ever........
I agree with him on everything, but what he said on the oatmeal. oatmeal will have a minimal effect on insulin because of all the fiber that comes with it. Berries and oats are very low GI.. the zone diet wouldnt have it on its food list otherwise.
Just watching this 5+ minute video only scratches the surface of Gary's research. On CNN Dr. Andrew Weil cautioned the 'experts' on dismissing the exhaustive and meticulous research that he has done. I am finishing up the book now and it is very very very very well researched. It contains at least 600+ journal articles from the most credible sources in North America (if not internationally). I respectfully suggest a careful investigation and ask "are we fatter or thinner?"
@superdave147 Yeah I just started GCBC a few days ago, on page 150 or so and Jesus does he go over a whole lot of research... it's great stuff. And thankfully this interviewer had the respect to let him talk and finish his questions.
I've been doing low carb for about 5 days now and although I've always been in pretty good shape, I just feel a shitload better eating this way with no ravenous cravings. Not to mention my blood pressure is lower than it's ever been. Thank god for Mr. Taubes.
Hahahaha, I REALLY like him. ;P I still believe he's incorrect, however. Obviously, you can lose weight on Atkins...you can lose weight on ANY lower-than-burn calorie intake levels.
I also agree that saturated fat is not that bad, because I come from a background (I'm Russian) that thrives on this fat and pretty much this fat alone. ;P But Taubes isn't just getting saturated fat...he's getting a BALANCE of all the fats, as he mentions he eats vegetables. That, in my opinion, is the key.
If you listen to his lectures or read his books, you will find that he give examples of overweight people who are starving. They don't get enough calories, yet they are overweight.
And, there are plenty of people out there who reduce calories and not carbs and find that they don't lose weight.
If it really is as simple as calories in vs. calories out, then it should apply in *every* situation. It doesn't. There are many other factors at play.
What makes you think the problem with these people is too many carbs?
I agree with you that TOO MANY carbs is bad, just like TOO MANY grams of fat or TOO MANY grams of protein is BAD. No one is debating that. However, I am skeptical in believing that someone with a balanced diet is going to have a hard time reducing weight on a reduced calorie diet. Just out of curiousity, have you read any books by Dean Ornish? In my opinion, his logic beats that of Gary Taubes.
Now I don't eat oatmeal or pasta. At the time, I ate protein with the pasta but not with the oatmeal. Pasta made me feel bloated though. I don't do too well with grains.
In my personal experience, I simply established my daily caloric needs and got them from a variety of foods. I ate what I wanted, but made sure that I stayed at my caloric needs for the day. @cyprusxxx Every time someone describes a low carb diet, they add high fat diet to the description.
If you believe this a fair assessment, then you should also describe a low fat diet as a low protein, high carb diet.
