Let Alaska become independent of the U.S. gov't. Of course, they would have to buy their freedom from the U.S. and think of all the money sent to the state as it is now. For every $1 Alaska sends to Washington, they get $2 in return. The idea that they are "independent" is far from reality.
Being a Canadian and having to deal with this issue only 2 times more obvious with the Quebecois I can say that secession isn't this big scary thing. If it's what the people of a state want, then they damn well deserve it. Look at Ireland, almost all of Yugoslavia, North and South Sudan. The people want to separate so the propper means were taken to make that a reality. If you're American and you're trying to stifle Alaska then look back to when you were a British state. It's all the people.
Alaska doesnt need the lower 48, and if AK did break away they could make better use of their vast natural resouces with out the damn federal government constantly butting in. If Alaska did want to break away i would be in total support.
I have never been to Alaska and I'm just a city boy from Los Angeles, but I totally support you guys. If the citizens of Alaska don't want to be apart of the United States, then you all shouldn't have to be.
Having lived in Alaska for over 12 years, I would like to set the record straight on some of the comments made here.
1) Alaska could, if allowed, produce enough food to feed over 10 times it's population. Don't believe me? Contact the Co-operative Extension Office in Palmer.
2)Alaska is a field commanders nightmare and a partisans dream. An army of about 50-75k could hold off an invading force 10 times it size.

Alaska was voted in improperly. Hawai'i, Florida and the South West were conquered. Texas and Vermont were independent nations that joined voluntarily with the understanding they could leave at will. Whatever claims the Feds can make about the other states, the states I've listed have a clear right to independence.
They have no food (to cold to farm on the needed scale) and considering the Russian's expansionist policies, it likely wouldn't end well for them. Now if they could get Canadian support...
Well in my opinion there could be a chance, because i mean if they can find a way to tap into some of the oil they have without ruining the environment up there, that would put some gold in the treasury, and for food, well they could just import, and when dealing with russia, who knows, they could cut a deal with china? Here is what I don't get about Alaska. Alaska ranks third as the state benefiting most from federal spending. Alaska receives about $2.03 for every $1.00 they pay in taxes. Here is what I don't get about Alaska. Alaska ranks third as the state benefiting most from federal spending. Alaska receives about $2.03 for every $1.00 they pay in taxes. And they want independence? I just wish they would get jobs and get out of the bars. What a bunch of lazy welfare sponges. They suck down federal spending faster than the fire water we white men give them. Alskans dont work because they have a socialist government up there.

Wow! What a great choice McCain made for VP.
The rank and file GOP fool/voter wasn't sure what to make of the "Palin's daughter is a minor and pregnant scandal" (so much for all that right-wing abstinance crap huh?) but they did know that they didn;'t want any more surprises. No more shoes dropping.
Well, here's the NEXT shoe. And the sound of it dropping sounds a lot like a bombshell. This needs to be on the national media!
