@OhNoNotMyPenis Start the game with MONKEY.EXE and it will load with the default audio device (usually PC speaker or Adlib). Type MONKEY X and will show a list of other options. E.g. Monkey G with launch the game in Game Blaster mode.
@dsaerno the gamegear has the same sound chip as the tandy, the sn77496. other systems with that chip include other sega consoles (upto and including the genesis), sega and aruse arcade games, some konami games, the tecmo arcade game "star force", the coleco vision, the bbc micro, the creati vision, and the ti 99/4a (as ti ms 7200).
I had This for the Commodore Amiga 500 years ago and I honestly think it sounded far better than any of the pc souncards minus the cd version of course
Yea nostalgia is such an interesting thing. Although the Roland version sounds better in objective terms, it's only the Adlib version that bring back these nostalgic memories :D
I've heard far worse from the PC speaker -- they actually did an awesome job with that version of the music considering the limitations they had to deal with.
Your Gameblaster emulation is not even close to the real thing -- the real version sounds far better.
My crappy Soundblaster clone (Aztech Labs Sound Galaxy Washington 16) sounds just like the Adlib version.
Here I used a SB 1.5 with CMS chips and it does indeed sound "fuller". The Prince of Persia recording is DOSBox though, back then I couldn't get it working on the PC :D
There is new project underway! It used "The Secret of Monkey Island SE" which you can buy from steam. This will allow you to play the game in DOS or ScummVM with improved music AND digital speech! I tried it and it's fantastic...
It's called the CD Talkie Edition Project and you can find it by googling it.
Yes ScummVM is quite a bit different, and yes I have used it heaps.
Monkey Island never supported General Midi, however it supports a lot of the other soundcards. The newer DOS games that support General Midi often had no support for Tandy or Gameblaster. So I chose a Game that has a lot of soundcards to show this comparison :-D
More videos to follow for sure, I am in the process of bringing together real hardware soon...
It's strange but on my DosBox when I type "monkey r" in dos prompt ("monkey ?" for all options, so "r" means Roland) it runs with another type of music.
Yes monkey r is for a Roland MT-32. This card came before General Midi and it can't be emulated accurately. Same applied for Monkey Island 2 and Fate of Atlantis. Day of the Tentacle however, supports General Midi!
Roland really ruled the midi market with MT32 in the beginning and later with Sound Canvas (which was Rolands General Midi card). I am in the process in finding real Roland modules (hard to find and pricey) so I will definitely follow up with some more videos :-D
So it's the wrong emulation? ScummVM also emulates MT32, but with another set of settings. It needs for this two files - MT32_CONTROL.ROM and MT32_PCM.ROM. And the emulation of MT32 in ScummVM is different from emulation of it in DosBox. Is it an incorrect emulation too? I think these two files contain the REAL MT32 instruments - am I wrong?
Yes that emulation is quite poor. There are emulation projects for MT-32. MUNT is the best one, but non of these are able to accurately emulate a real MT-32...
The bottom line is that for authentic MT-32 sound you need a real Roland MT32 or compatibles such as Roland LAPC-I, CM-32, CM-64 and CM-500
im having a hard time getting the sound to work on this game, how did you do it?

Huh, didn't know it had different variations depending on the card it's got.

this is hands down the best thing I've ever seen done with just a sine wave from the PC speaker

@theshawz PC speaker had a square wave, not a sine wave.

CMS version has some serious problems with dissapearing tunes or dosbox has those with emulating it properly.
I remember this music from PC speaker, and then from soundblaster. But here sounds a bit slow sometimes xD

I think the PC Speaker version (Nostalgia!) and the CD Audio (Depth!) sound the best.

soundblaster version is awesome compared to the other ones

The PC speaker one is cool, because they actually made it sound like it was supposed to be music. I also like the Tandy version a lot.

Thankfully, there's always the CD version, which is basically the MT-32 soundtrack recorded.

Did you try using ScummVM? It can use also General MIDI - I think it's different from DosBox SoundBlaster MIDI.

And for ScummVM you need to change Music Driver in the Audio tab in Settings.
Grue012 1 year ago
Yes you are correct, I have been using DOSBox, pretty much THE emulator for old games such as this.
The audio emulation is very accurate, however it's not possible to emulate Roland MT-32, which is missing in my video.
I also updated the original notes, so that people are aware that it was created using DOSBox.
One day I plan to record with real hardware, something to look forward!
Thanks for the comments!

Neat. I assume you used an emulator though.
