the spacerace was to investigate the giant ship, they didnt know about the robot, and as for the autobots not knowing, in the novel, stascream shot the ship down and the autobots concluded that sentinel prime (the robot on the ship) was dead with everyone else onboard the ship. but the humans didnt tell autobots what they found so the autobots have thought sentinel was dead all these years
