  • Damn, that sounds badass. Who needs a Marshall?

  • So that's what my pre-CBS Bassman would sound like on ''10''! REPLACE that old box!! Go to MOJO TONE for their ''blackface Bassman head'' repro box ($150-$200?). A beat-up blackface Bassman in need of a new repro box is a GOOD kind of problem!!! Rock on!

  • @Nazzz65

Nah, the beat up wood gives it the tone :)

  • Awesome tone, sounds almost like Guns n' Roses!

  • i watch this video just to listen to the song, nice playing man!

  • Dayum does that ever sound good

  • dude the entire track is bad ass you should get out and play more dude make a cd

  • Who would have ever guessed that a bass amp created so much amazing classic rock songs back in the day xD

  • great tone! classic amp!

  • I really want to see a demo of that rhodes!

  • Great tone! Is it stock? Not modded??....t-tops in your les paul?

  • Ugh, I had one of these and sold it, and watching this makes me regret that. I remember playing "What Do I Get" by the Buzzcocks on my LP jr, Bassman volume at 10, with ear plugs, of course, and just getting lost in the roar. I've owned a Marshall 100W plexi as well, but the 50W Bassman has an otherworldly mojo that trumps the plexi, if you ask me. This vid is a perfect example of how awesome this amp is. Nice playing!

  • Nice OD

  • Funny, I don't think it's very loud

  • Sounds good but there are some problems with the rithm

  • i have a vintage 1970 fender amp head and its knobs are only mixer dwell and tune can someone tell me what model its name

  • @ronquillo2

sounds like a tube spring reverb unit. Not an amp itself, just a reverb effect.

  • @gamedojo hey! i love your amp like there is no tomorrow. is this the aa or ab circuit? is a piggyback? could i get some info on its insides so i can find something on ebay similar...lol or identical :) hey thanks a tone -cj

  • @CJsoccer4

Stock AB165 1965. The key elements is that I retubed and Recaped the amp and used Scumback speakers. just try finding a stock bassman and have it looked over by a good tech.

  • Do you use some sort of distortion pedal?

  • @ouchinmypants

Not in this video. Guitar into cranked amp.

  • Digging this. you're obviously having a great time, squeezing great tones out of your guitar and amp. Thanks

  • OMg volume 10?!?!

  • hey bud, do U think the blackface bassmans sound way better than the silverface ones, or do U think it is all hype man, I just got a bassman 100 sf, but it has master volume, so going to upgrade all the caps and tranny, and am going to take the master out of the circuit, as it is of no use, it sounds killer like, I heard a ri the other day mind, and it sounded good to, ptp for me now like, would not touch another pcb now like, they are crap, solder joints, the list goes on like.

  • I played live through black face Bassmans through most of the 70's,no pedal,i put 2 humbuckings in my Strat and turned it on 10....i didn't know and used a regular guitar cord for the speaker cords and wondered why i kept blowing them out...latley i play through a 61 Bassman head trough a 1970 Marshall 4-12 cab,it sounds great, but i use a pedal for over drive....sounds very Marshally to say the least!

  • AMAZING TONE! What speakers are in that cab? =)

  • @RICHARDMedia Nevermind just saw where you said what they were earlier xD

  • @RICHARDMedia

    Thanks:)

    Scumback M75s

  • @gamedojo hey! did you double the lead guitar sound? or is that just rythmn and lead guitar and the lead has some serious tone and harmonics?? it has to be two lead guitars or a chorus effect right?

  • @CJsoccer4

No, single track. Slight reverb added in post-production.

  • this would have been AWESOME to listen to if the timing wasnt off...I mean the tones, feel, licks are all there...u should post it again man!

  • Can you explain what 8 ohm and 16 oms is ? ( like the output on heads ) keep it simple ! THANK YOU !

  • @TheMusicDude1997

That is the measurment of resistance the speakers produce. An output transformer is designed to "See" a resistive load of a specific OHM. 2, 4, 8 and 16 are the common speaker resistance loads.

  • i really like the look of it. Its a bassman, so im not even gonna repeat what so many people know to be true about its sound. But it seems to me that people look at something thats beaten up and say "wow, what a piece of junk". The more nicks and dings a guitar or an amp has, the more character it has. That fucking thing is ALL personality.

  • where in the world do you live that you are able to crank a bassman for long enough to record this without having the police called? haha

  • Great tone and fantastic playing. Well done.

  • hey just thought i'd mention that while you may dig the sound, using speakers that are higher resistance than your amp requires can put strain on the power tubes and shorten their lifespan.

  • @beanobluesbreaker

Actually, its the other way around. Lower speaker resistance is bad for tubes, higher resistance is bad for output transformer due to flyback voltages. Both are bad. But one missmatch with fenders is almost never and issue in my experience.

  • I bought one for $80 from a friend and LUV it!

  • damn nice jam you got going!

  • Sweet chops and tone man! How does the amp respond to distortion pedals? I'm assuming OD's would be great with the amp, but I need distortion for certain gig applications.

Scumbacks are sweet! I just put one in my Marshall Class 5. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a change in speakers. Jim is a great guy to book.

  • I thought my 65 Bassman was ugly. Yours is FUGLYYYYYYYY!!!!

    Who cares how it looks.

    Its like the old saying....

"If you wanna be happy the rest o' your life marry you self an ugly wife."

This is the ugly wife you should marry!

    Best wishes.

  • great sound!!! what speakers are you running, and are all bassmans 4ohm? whats the ohm info on the cab you're using. Someone in the comments said something about running the 4ohm head through an 8ohm cab makes it sound fatter?? Thanks!!

  • @NearBear77

Scumback m75 speakers. Just killer speakers.

All bassmans are 4ohms. ANd yes, running into 8ohms will fatten it slightly. THats what I'm doing here! My cab is 8ohms.

  • @gamedojo

    thanks man!

  • @gamedojo

thanks, are they the 65w 8ohm speakers?

  • @NearBear77

16ohm speakers wired in parallel. I think they are 100w versions... no difference in sound between the 100 and 65 watt versions and I feel the bigger wattage keeps me even more safe.

  • there's only one thing better than a Bassman and that's more Bassmans jumpered together.

  • @1952Telecaster hah, nice one mate

  • What speakers are you pushing this through, and what OHM? Thanks

  • Hi, one Question - You said that you play directly from Guitar into Amp, as we can see in the vid. But annother guy who post a vid with 68' Silverface tells me that I can't reach nice Overdrive without pedals. So now what should I believe

  • @MrWanni84

Well...I'd say my video speaks for itself. I used no pedals. Only you can determine if its "nice overdrive" or not. I honestly not sure why the other guy says what he says since these amps are not clean machines my any stretch of the imagination. Maybe his amp isn't stock or has something wrong with it :)

  • Only thing I have found is a 50 watt bassman gets swallowed if you play in loud rock band with two guitars. I prefer 100 watt bassmans.

  • Great tone. Nice Paul. I have a 71 also. You making me want a bassman.

  • I've watched this video so many times that i decided to open a youtube account just to tell you how much you've helped me find sound ive been after. i have a '67 dripedge bassman (ab165) and im in the process of building up a new cab with those same speakers....

If was looking for a little more gain for certain parts of songs (kinda like a jcm 800)

    WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS RECOMMEND?

ps - id love to hear a demo with an SG if you have the time (maybe with a tubescreamer?? :)

  • Excellent sound, I have a 67 Bassman that the tolex is torn on and it bothered me, after listening to you, and reading your comments I realize it does not matter, it is the tone that matters, and my 67 has it. Thanks

  • @msgscout007

Yeah, cosmetics shouldn't matter to musicians.

  • If you learn anything from this video.... learn this, when looking at vintage gear, it's the most beat up pieces that tend to sound the best.....and I'm sure you can guess why that is.....oh shit....it's because they got used a lot because they sounded so good.

  • @1971SuperLead

YES! This is a hard fact in my opinion. The funniest part about that concept is how the mint condition examples of amps and guitars are so sought after by guys that don't have their priorities in the right place driving the prices beyond reasonable. I know a guy that cares more about how the condition is, then the tone. SO STUPID. In fact, when I search for vintage gear, I LOOK for the crappiest condition. USED gear equals GOOD gear!

  • @gamedojo Oh no! Did we just let the cat out of the bag? Now people will be giving there museum pieces the distressed look to make them look like they might sound good! Oh the humanity!

Hey, is that a 50 watt? How many power tubes and what kind are they? If you ran a jump cable to the other channel with a delay pedal inbetween.....would it sound good? I mean, you would turn the level all the way up on the delay pedal and use the bass channel volume knob as a mix knob.

  • @1971SuperLead

lol...well, technically the cat is already out of the bag. Why do you think the "relicing" industry is making so much cash! Stupid if you ask me. My '71 strat is naturally relic'd, but from a distance folks might even think its new because of the dumb relic guitars our today.

Dual TAD 6l6 power tubes. I could run a jump cable into a delay, but you loose something when you jump channels. Also, the "bass" channels on these amps sound horrible.

  • @gamedojo, I've listened to a bunch of Basmans in the last 24 hours on you tube and none sound as good as yours. What I did find was a great sounding 1957 Bassman in a 4 10 cabinet to rival yours, but talk about different price ranges! .

So I take it, it's a 50 watt head with 2 "TAD"? 6L6 power tubes? What the hell is a TAD? Telefunken? Are they as old as the head? Have you tried new EH tubes? Or new Mullards?

    Is the head all original?

  • @1971SuperLead

Well, I'll let you in on a secret. Bassmans are 4ohm amps and I"m running it into an 8ohm cab. That gives it a cleaner fatter sound when pushed hard. Not really recommended to mismatch, but it sounds good:)

TAD= Tube Amp Doctor. They're new production 6l6s. And to be honest. Ever since this vid, the amps been in the closet. I don't own any 4ohm cabs and I can't use this amp on "10"....lol! MIght sell it someday, maybe...

  • @gamedojo No harm in that ohm mismatch. It's the other way that would melt your transformer.

I suggest you get a Weber attenuator and enjoy that Bassman again.

  • Love it. Everyone goes spewing over the Marshall and les Paul paired together. But the bassman sure as heck does it just as well. Nice les Paul too btw. Great tone

  • you got your bassman to sing some good gain but i want to keep my clean channel clean any tips so i dont have the clean channel gainy like yours?

the reason i ask is because i wan to make the bass channel the gain side of the amp and keep normal channel clean then mix both channels

  • surfing with the alien, just slower

  • I almost lost my mind!

  • Excellent sound man! That amp has a lovely natural break up. Good playing aswel. Very patient!

  • Used to own one just like it... played it for years. Used no pedals... just used my Les Paul and cranked the volume, bass and treble up to 10 and that was it

  • Damn. Great tone. Great playing. Fantastic.

  • This sounds more Marshall-y than my Marshall!

  • Smart of you to wear ear protection! Sounds great though, you did a good job of capturing the tone.

  • Nice tone.

  • Comment removed

  • Is it worth buying If I wont be playing at home at high volume levels? So damn pretty sounding and I feel I must have one!

  • I love this! I wonder is it even worth it to blow the kind of dough on this if I wont be able to play this loud? I would love all input. The Tone on this baby is Crazy and I watch this video at least once a day. Nice Rocking!

  • I really like the sound of this amp... and for the price, it can't be beat!

  • I'm amazed about this video. I think it is the 5th time today that I check it out. I think your playin' is fine and the tone is great. I would say that playing on full throttle with this amp is a bit too loud for my ears, but the sound is great!!!!

  • greatest tone!!!

  • That right there is one freaking good tone man. One of the best sounding Bassmans I've heard

  • Woah man... I think I might be converted. I was certain I wanted a marshall plexi, but after hearing this... So there are no pedals or mods on this? Do you know how much they should cost roughly? Thanks alot man for posting this, that rhythm tone is sweet. Im guessing its loud enough to play anything except stadiums right? What cab have you got it through there? Would a marshall cab like a 1960a be fine with it? Once again, thanks alot man.

  • @Scrapod

Yes, no pedals or mods. Price varies quite a bit. They usually range from $350-$550. Marshall cab will work great, but you may need to rewire it. Its a 4ohm head. A 2ohm or 8ohm load will work fine, but the usual marshall 16ohm may be bad for your transformer (Flyback voltages)

  • @Scrapod the plexi models were based off of the fender bassman ;)

  • @Scrapod

If you're playing stadiums, they'll probably have enough mics and monitors around that volume shouldn't be an issue;):)

    @gamedojo

Cool, creative video w/ great tones! Thanks for posting!

  • how dare you rock like that. I had no idea a Bassman ould sound like that. Are the new re-issues simular? Are they're certain years of Bassmans that we should stay clear of? and also how about the Slver face ones? any good? This tone rocks for days!

  • @myway43

Your too funny... Actualy, you're hearing probably one of the most common Fender circuits around. The STock AB165 circuit can be found from '64 all the way into '74-'75 I believe. This video, though not perfect, just goes to show you don't need crazy cash to get this sound. We over think our gear I think...

  • Is that a fretlees wonder. Great tone...

  • @eventide55

    Thanks...

...answered the fretless wonder question a few posts down. It might have been in a previous life, but I Play to hard to have it setup like that. Pretty high action and jumbo frets. She's a player's guitar now...not a museum piece:)

  • @gamedojo I had a 71 Les Paul just like that one that I bought brand new. It was 350.00. It was a fretless wonder. It sounds great.. Sounds better than my Marshalls, I had a 64 Bassman also. I didn't realize what I had at the time.

  • No way this is just amp it would be the most popular amp ever

  • @Taygoo15

Not sure what to tell you. Its just guitar straight into the amp. I didn't even add any post-recording effects or EQ... Promise.

  • @gamedojo No mods or anything? also what pickups are you using?

  • @Taygoo15

I took time to run maintanance on the amp (new tubes/power caps) and then did a quick wiring tweak to the bias circuit so one can actually bias the amp properly. But nothing to do with the signal path. This is what a healthy strong running Blackface bassman head sounds like cranked up... wait until you hear clips of my homebuilt 45/100 Marshall:)..... I use Dunan '59 pickups. Just spectacular pickups at a killer price.

  • @gamedojo Jesus it sounds better than a Marshall. Is the 59 bassman similar

  • @Taygoo15

No, the '59 bassman is a very different circuit, not to mention the 10" speakers. But ironically, the '59 bassman has a LOT more in common with the early Marshall circuit. Its the amp Jim Marshall copied for his first amp.

  • @gamedojo What is the difference in the AB165 and the AA864 circuit

  • @livingamericans

    Straight in:) Amp on 10.

  • are you just plugged directly into the amp, or is the crunch coming from a pedal?

  • amazing!!! man your tone melted my face off!!!!!

  • Wicked tone! i think this inspired me to save up for a 65 bassman..

  • @Strive02

Thanks... Good news is that they are some of the cheapest fenders you can buy, and secondly, you dont NEED a '65. This circuit (ab165) can be found in early 70s bassmans as well.

  • Great sound--and you know, I've got a very similar setup--a 71 les paul custom cherry/orange sunburst i've owned since 1976 and a 66 bassman i got a year later. You definitely have more bite to your sound tho. One Q: is that LP a fretless wonder? Mine was, but I recently had it refretted and rebridged so its more like a conventional LP ...makes bends easier, tho I'm afraid it hurts the value since its no longer "original."

  • @jtcorrigan

It might have been a "fretless wonder" in a previous life, but it has since been refretted with Jumbo frets and big strings. I play too hard live to have such a delicate setup.

  • I've recently just made an amp based on the AA165 (Slightly different version of this amp) but it's 30w and uses EL34 tubes.. sounds remarkably similar to this, just a bit more british.

  • dam that thing is a relic,im surprised that it has a bright switch though. Nice vid.

  • What kind of speakers

  • Scumback 100w Greenback Clones

  • Apologize? Nossir! You got NOTHIN' to apologize about! THANK YOU for some good ole' rock 'n roll! Even old geezers like me get to grin and tap our toes when we're privileged to hear sweetness like this! As the young people used to say: YOU ROCK! THANKS!

  • The only way to cranck it is with volume at 10 ?? can channels mix it like the marshall jtm ?

  • oh man this is awesome!!

  • Why exactly do people think the tweed circuits are better? I really do not see why there is anything wrong with the sound coming from this amp.

  • Ah, the toanz.

  • have the exact same amp but when it's cranked to 10.... well it's pretty frigging loud , so loud you can go deaf trying to hear the tone your getting

so please explain why it sounds like that and mine ( untouched ) aswell sounds much louder

  • @excellentwonderful

Mine was VERY loud as well. But using an SM57 mic for recording allows me to control how the recording sounds over Youtube.

  • This sounds amazing!!! Greatt sound!! I made a vid of my vintage fender amp, check it out?

  • sounds great!

  • WOW!!sounds really fucking amazing!I was searching one of this of second hand but dindn't find anyone, but I have the chance to buy the one of 1962(the blonde)have you tired it??or do you know the diference between yours and that one??

  • Thanks! Glad you dug the jam! Very interesting. First of all, the '62 and the one I've got in this video are actually quite a lot different. The '62 is worth a LOT of money since its rather rare and is the sought after version of these fender bassman heads. But the 62 will also NOT have the gain and grind of a 65 or later bassman. If you want one just like the amp I have in my clip here, check out the silverface bassmans (1968-74) same circuits as mine and there are a billion of them out there.

  • @gamedojo Thanks man for the info!!well, searching more and more I found one like yours and probably I'll buy it, and I just wanted to know if this amp has a good response with distortion pedals and if it's very loud and with good body( sorry if I'm writing bad hah cause I'm Spanish) because I wanted it to play energic punk rock(social d, bad religion..) live with my band,

    greetings man and thanks

  • @bizkitfren

how much did he request for the blonde?

  • Oh man!!!! It doesn't get any better than this! I thought all Fender's were mostly clean machines. Guess that goes to show you how much I know. :)

    This rocks!

  • HA! Yeah, its sorta bad press that Marshall = Dirt and Fender = Clean. They all have tubes and all overdrive when you crank them! :) glad you enjoyed the clip.

  • @gamedojo actually the original Marshall Circuit was based off of a Tweed Bassman

  • @YogiSizzle True, but these AB165 Bassman heads have little to nothing in common with their tweed brothers. I'm surprised the kept the name. And when folks think Fender, they usually point to the blackface era.

  • @gamedojo Yeah I know, but the blackface era amps can get pretty raunchy too, especially the lower wattage amps like the Deluxe reverb

  • Hells yeah. Neil Young had some kind of similar amp set up back in the day I think,

  • I thought he always used small Tweed Deluxes... but I could be wrong.

  • Thank you so much for this big inprovisation!!!. Great, congratulations from Barcelona (Spain)

  • What speakers would you recommand for a '64 bassman?

  • @peterc1024: Scumback M75 speakers are the best greenback clones ever made. In fact, probably better. You can get them in high power rating to cover the wattage safely.

  • one of the best bassman tones ive heard on youtube.ive got a 65' bassman and matching cab. sounds just like this vid.i thought it might have been modded .but if yours is stock i guess mine might be to.sounds great and great playing.cheers....

  • Really tasty. I have a '67 deluxe reverb and love it. Later, Glen

  • Hey, I was wondering if it would be okay to run this amp through my 8 ohm 4x12 behringer cabinet. I've read that this head is a 4 ohm head, and I have the opportunity to buy the same one. I could really use some help on this, I'm stumped.

  • Should be fine. In fact, I'm running into a 8ohm 2x12 cab in this video. Its generally alright to run a mismatch of one setting up or down. (i.e. 2ohm or 8ohms for a 4ohm amp).

  • @gamedojo Really, so it'll be fine? I just don't wanna damage the amp, since it is a vintage amp. I don't care as much about the cab, since it's cheap. worth like, 80 dollars, not an issue. I'm just hoping it wouldn't affect the output transformer or the tubes in anyway. And I've heard that its best to match the impedance, so if I have to, I can rewire the cab so it'll be 4 ohms. Just wanna take care of my stuff, it'd be my first vintage and first tube amp.

  • Yeah, 8ohms should be fine. Really. But if you can wire the amp to 4ohms, do that. Its always best to wire an amp to its intended impedance, but you're really not putting much stress on the amp at 8ohms.

  • @gamedojo Thanks for the info man, but unfortunately, I didn't get the amp. Guitar center told me over the phone it was in great working condition. I went there today, they said it was in pieces and broken for the past 4 months. Just another reason I don't trust GC..

  • At 10!. Sounds really great. I also owned one bassman blackface,...but I would going deaf if I try to put it at 10. It's too loud for an indoor show i think. Did you use an attenuator?

    Any noise suppressor?

    Thanks.

  • Nope:) No attenuator or other gadgets. Just guitar --- cable --- Amp on 10.

  • nice tone!!! Are you able to get any clapton Bluesbreakers/Cream tone out of it. Sounds like it does the zz top/70s Stones thing well.

  • It might be a bit tough to get the Beano type tone. The circuit has a lot of oscillation suppression and feedback loops which smooth the tone quite a bit. When I think of early clapton, I think of a more aggressive bite in the treble frequencies.

  • You may not favor the LPs as you say, but your tone is killer with that LP, great dynamics at the slow down. Your LP tones kill your strat tones. Just my opinion.

  • I tend to agree with you, but I've always felt it was easy to get pleasing tones with an LP. It really takes a lot of skill to make a strat sound real good. I like a challenge and I like to try to get the best tones possible with a strat. I use my LP as my main guitar in my band:) Thanks!

  • though your playing poison it sounds tight lol

  • Poison? Is taht a chord progression similar to one of thier tunes? I just started jamming. Didn't know it was poison:)

  • haha yeah I had an ex that was a huge poison lover so it was close to something theirs, mainly the beginning reminded me of the tone of the guitars

  • If you'd like to hear an audio clip of the amp 10min after I recapped it using a strat, message me and I'll send you a quick link.

I DO need to make a good vibratone clip, but my second SM57 broke and I need 2 to make a proper audio recording.

  • sick tone bro..

  • WOW!

    Wonderful sound and great playing!

    What lespaul do you use?

  • Thanks... if you read the title, its simply my real 1971 les paul Custom. Its got Seymour Duncan '59 pickups in it, though. Stock pickups in these 70's les paul are weird sounding.

  • did you recently post about this on TGP?

either way, sounsd great. just got me an original 66 with cab last week. i am loving it.

  • Yup, I like to keep the vintage amp voice alive on that forum:)

Wish I had the bassman cab wih this amp. But I'm not going to spend more money just for looks. The Germino cab sound great with this amp.

  • Sounds awesome!

The guys from retro amps modded this amp for me and made a 2x10 cab for it plus a build in fender reverb unit!

    I'll post some vids soon!

    peace

  • Dat's what I'm talkin 'bout!

  • love the bassman. That one has some stories i bet....Jump the channels it will be even better.
