Once again TYT shows his ignorance and stupidy. The reason why the demorats did not clubber them like TYT wanted because they are just as guilty if even more so. People forget that mortgage and finance policies in the last 20 years was form a demorat administration.
wait ..Cenk what is this about nearly ?? they did cause the next great depression.. the only thing keeping the country afloat is the huge amount of drug money laundered thru US banks and the Saudi oil money they pour into the country to buy up US assets by now Saudi Arabia should own 10% of the US economy a few yrs ago they owned 7%..they rest of the economy is based on the huge amount of worthless money the FED puts into the economy
republicans and democrats are equally to blame. look at how all the politicians vote, they behave exactly the same way. Obama or Mccain it does not matter.
This must be a Saturday Night Live skit you are practicing, I do not remember the Republicans saying the almost caused the collapse, but everyone deserving home ownership sure helped moved things to that. WE need a lot more free enterprise and keep the governments sticky little fingers out of it. Look at all these payoffs to get this health care bill passed taht very few seem to want at all. Do the Democrats care what the people want, HELL NO!
How can a political party CAUSE a fuckin depression. ITS SAME AS A CREDIT CARD DEBT. WE SPEND ( import ) then we make ( export ) as a nation. CASE CLOSED. Blame this shit on tycoons like boeing / GM and all those big companies.
My fellow Americans make sure you get your swine flu shot as it is your patriotic duty to prevent this pandemic and your IBM Verichip RFID implant as this will keep you safe from terrorists. In addition this chip will speed up checkpoints, grocery checkout and financial transactions. This also allows medical professionals instant access to medical records in the case of an accident or medical situation.
McCain didn't even graduate from college, and when he graduated from the Naval Academy, he was fourth from the bottom of his class. No disrespect to Sen. McCain's service record because he served the country courageously in Vietnam, but you talk with no facts. Obama graduated from Harvard law school in 1991, get your facts straight and don't use weak attacks like this. You're probably a conservative and a Glenn Beck slappy...
Okay, what happened was FannieMae and FreddieMac forced banks to give out loans en masse to people who couldn't afford it. This began with the Community Reinvestment Act in 1979 and was enforced in the 1990s and during the Bush Admin. Bush had issued many memos warning about the bubble being created along w/McCain, but Dems. notably Obama and Barney Frank blocked it. The Dems. screwed up; not the REpubs.
This isnt a repub. or dem. problem. We all are accessories to the impending depression. WE maxed out credit, and all the financial Einsteins let it happen. Its not a question of if its gonna happen anymore, its when, is the economy gonna finish collapseing
So, the Repubs "almost" caused a great depression? OK, so why is the economy worsening under Obama? Oh wait, I forgot this is going to be Bush's fault for the next year. (lol) Fu(king left wing moron.
@Mabuza14 What [part is getting better the reduction of layoffs, not new jobs but less being laid off. You can only lay off so many people before there are no people with the company any more. Less getting laid off is not real positive and there is nothing else that I see positive so you keep on enjoying this bullshit Obama is layig on you.
No, if anything, you're the fucking moron. The banking collapse was caused by deregulation between 2000 and 2006. It takes months and even years for a country to recover from a recession after it has been announced, but you probably wouldn't know that because you're a dumb fuck conservative who typically fucks things up and blames the person who inherits that mess. Read up on economics and market trends before you point fingers my friend.
Yea, deregulated under Clinton in '99 by Bill Clinton and approved in the Senate by Chuck Schumer, John Kerry, Chris Dodd and Joe Biden with a vote of 90-8 dumbfuck. No new deregulation has occurred since. In fact, the Bush administration repeatedly called for more oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This is now all on your boy-Obama but by all means keep deflecting just like your boy-Obama and his left hand man/bitch Pelosi. The ball's in his court and he's obviously a failure.
No, its still you because you have no clue about the ideology of your party (hands off of business), and you call me stupid. That bill is right, but one drop doesn't make a rainstorm. There were scores of Republicans who called and got more deregulation during the early 2000's. But that's what you idiotic conservatives do, blame the other party and when you get caught, say it happened before you and hope that the person doesn't do their homework. So, take that idiot Palin and go away.
That's the standard left wing hack modus operandi. Once you run out of argument for the current state of the country, drudge up Sarah Palin. Way to have an adult conversation, kid!
Actually, that was an argument, I'm not a liberal and you're still a complete idiot who I tire of dealing with. Even when presented with a cogent argument, you plug your ears and hear only what you agree with, discarding the rest of it. If anyone is the child here its you, I can picture you just putting your fingers in your ear and singing really loud when presented with information that you don't agree with. Now, go run along and let because this is an adult conversation, kids aren't welcome
O.K., you're basing your political opinions on what you're watching and hearing from "Young Turks" and everyone else is an "idiot". Shine on you crazy diamond. You rock! Yes, the state of the union is still Bush's fault. No, I think it's Sarah Palin's fault. Fucking twit. BTW, how's that "change" working out for ya?
Wow, you're extremely pesky AND idiotic If only your grasp of facts was equaled by your wit, then you would advance a seemingly strong argument. I don't base opinions on what others say, I base them on something called reading, which I would suggest to you, although I have the hunch that you're an illiterate individual who lets others form your opinion for you. BTW, while there are people like you in Congress, change will take a long time to come to Washington. Until then, carry on moron.
this is why our President wants "Bipartisan" votes with this healthcare he acknowledged he can achieve reform with just democratic support. but wants republicans to be part of it.. IMO its incase of Blowback that maybe it wont work, or cause an even worsening situation short term with jobs. Republicans can later down the road use this against the Democratic party.. I'm free of debt I have health insurance and will take govt. insurance if i've got a choice due to double dipping me in cost.
democrats, republicans, conservatives, all of em, politicians as a whole are crooks and political parties are some of the worst things to ever happen to this country, just one more way for us to classify people, and apparently makes it easier to pass the blame on shit
Listen, I agree that the tactics used by GOP voters like, trying to trick voters into not going, or the candidates themselves whipping up fear, and anger at their rallies. If there is a crash, we always want to know who was driving, and there is no way to dispute GOP was at the wheel when this crisis was born. This crisis was not created from Democrat policy, or actions period. Just be glad GOP lost the senate in 2006 or it could be much worse already.
Oh, and for anyone who thinks that GOP was awesome in calling out F&F, or Acorn. Where the hell was GOP to scream about Enron, Morgan Stanley, AIG, Madoff, or numerous other GOP backed wealthy institutions that have done damage to our nation? If you honestly think this crisis was born of the democrats, then I know for a without doubt, you mainly watch fox news only, and will not allow fact, or reason to get in the way of what you believe. GOP WAS AT THE WHEEL MAKING THE POLICY THAT DID THIS.
I love you man (InteGrayting) its so hard to find others who make well made constructive arguments filled with logic. Unforunately too many tend to use explicits whilst agreeing or disagreeing... just look through these comments and you ll find a bunch... The republican party is a joke. i have tried so hard to be objective with them and give them the benefit of the doubt... but its impossible - their track record over the last 8 years alone is a disgrace
@InteGrayting Enjoy these idoits who are in power because it will not be much longer at the rate they are taking this country down the tubes. GOP tactics, they let all the people know what is going on and they are listening finally. GOP is far from perfect but at the rate the left is printing money and spending it there may not be any way to solve the problem the yare causing.
I didn't enjoy the last idiots in power, and the jury is still out if I will end up liking these idiots currently in power, but I can say this correctly. Obama has a world class temperment, and other than cherry picking, or spouting rhetoric, there really isn't anything that he has done yet to make me distrust him. Some of those jackholes in the senate however, and maybe a few appointed folks suck. Just like GOP, many dems are out for their wants instead of our needs. Same old same old.
this guy is a total douche. "you clobber em for that"...yea buddy thats the way to move forward, beat down on our own citizens. get a life and get the f* off of youtube
What the fuck are you talking about? In an election you want to make the other guy look bad and, at the same time, make yourself look better. Seriously, try making some sense next time.
i don't care. i think we need crazy republicans because they represent half the country. It sucks, but its the truth. Attacking doesn't solve any problems talking and figuring out solutions do. Whoever thought obama is a libral doesn't listen. He is very conservative, but still better then Sarah Palin! or Mc" locked up in vetnam my brain is fryed" cain.
Our Democratic congress pushed for home ownership for those unable to make payments. Acorn pushed hard for home ownership for those unable to make payments. Banks gave into the pressure and made loans to those unable to make payments. Now America as a whole is being made to pay for the totally irresponsible decisions made by those in control. There's enough blame to go around, but most lies with the democrates.
Google: "Senate Vote on Conference Report: S. 900 [106th]: Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act". 34 dems voted for it. Only 6 voted no. This act loosened banking regulations.
I must say the after the bush administration messed up,I am now an EX-republician. I still lean a little to the right, but I still laughed my head off with agreement, at your commentary because it is right on the mark!!!!! This past admnistration should be called the finacial TITANIC!!!!!
No banks etc... were already makeing VERY high risk loans the only thing clinton and ppl like acorn did was say : If your gonna make these loans don;t discriminate and give high risk loans to everyone and not just whites.
Truth is, democrats have screwed over this country just as much as republicans have, and I wish people would recognize that. It was the Clinton administration who set up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because for some reason "everyone deserves things they cannot afford" and it was a bipartisan movement which forced these companies to make loans to people who they knew could not pay them back. Not to mention that americans have a charge-it-and-forget-it attitude. Its not just republicans. Douche.
Democrats do not dare call the Repubs on this latest disaster because both have been playing this game since the beginning of land speculation which started a long time ago when all the free land was taken up and the owners claimed the right to charge the rest of us for access to our own planet. Real estate, i.e. land, speculation funded by the Feds criminal monetary policy, brokered by WS is merely the most recent chapter in the fundamental game of exploitation of most of us by some of us.
he's trying to show that he's willing to reach across the aisle. I agree its seems gutless but the one thing I've noticed about Obamas campaign is he promised to run a clean and respectful campaign and he kept his promise.sadly the public just doesn't respect clean politics. they talk about how they hate dirty campaigns but in the end thats what they go by.
my english teacher just told me the government has passed a $700 billion bill about defense policys and situation in iraq this week and if that bill doesnt get accepted the U.S. will go into the next depression by the start of next week. If that bill doesnt pass or go through were phocken screwed. cross every dam finger you got and pray that bill gets passed holy crap
Marijuana became illegal in 1937, When a (man/republican,moron) (Harry Anslinger) testified infront of the congress saying "Marijuana made white women seek relationships with negros" and it's been illegal ever sence.
McBush is a heartless moron. If your gonna have a country filled with selfish, ignorant citizens, your gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders. The term limits arent going to do any good. Your just gonna end up with a bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans.
Unlike John McCain, who hasnt held a press conference in 41 days, Obama faced the press today (9/23) to respond to Paulson and Bernankes testimony on the proposed $700 billion Wall St. bail-out. The Democratic candidate laid out clearly his short-term and long-term goals, and even took questions from the press afterwards. Now thats what I call real leadership.
McCain... where are you? What inane BS are you spouting today? You've lost it, old man. You're sub-pathetic!
I don't believe everything I read. I do my research and I understand how things work.
It is a well known fact that Bush lied to get us into Iraq (no WMD's or link to Al Qaeda). Congressman Kucinich wrote an impeachment resolution with all the details. Look it up.
There are 2 reasons Bush has not been impeached:
1) The president controls the Justice Dept which is supposed to investigate him.
2) The public does not know the facts (thanks to Bush), and would not support an impeachment.
Barack Obama received the 2nd most campaign contributions from Fannie Mae. Democrat Chis Dodd was first. Fannie Mae's disgraced former CEO-Franklin Raines- is an Obama economic advisor.
Obama slected disgraced former Countrywide Mortgage CEO Jim Johnson to lead his VP vetting committee. Remember? It was only a few months ago. Jim Johnson resigned when it was revealed his corruption and golden parachute were revealed. Obama's blasts Countrywide, picks Jim
And its the Repubs fault but Dems are in control of congress, that passes the legislation. Listen, the dems didnt catch this because they are to busy bashing repubs, creating comity after comity to investigate this or that about the repubs that they dont have time to do the simple jobs they get paid to much to do. We need to get all the far right and far left people out and get people that admit a shared responsibility. Dude no mater what you say its not just one person or parties fault.
lorenso,I'm a CLEVELAND BROWNS FAN,I JUST SUGGESTING YOU MIGHT WANT TO START LOOKING WHERE YOU WANT TO BE NOW.CAUSE WE ARE IN A DEPRESSION RIGHT NOW.OUR COUNTRY IN BEING SLIDE AND DICED UP BY BORROWING MONEY WE WILL BE PAYING ON FOR THE NEXT 20YRS.AND SEEING HOW THE CLE.BROWNS SUCK OR BLOW AND HAVE FOR THE LAST 20YRS. ID HAVE TO SAY CANADA LOOKS THE BEST.
McCain got A LOT more money from Fannie/Freddie executives than Obama. So did the lobbyists running McCain's campaign. Per Senate Lobbying Database - Charlie Black got $820,000 from Freddie. Wayne Berman/John Green got $1.14 million from Fannie Mae. Green got $180,000 from Freddie Mac. Arther Culvahouse got $80,000 from Fannie Mae. Politico reports at least 20 McCain's lobbyists got $12.3 million from FM/FM over last 9 years.
WTF are you smoking. The past 8 years (BUSH administration..the REPUBLICANS) has flipped this economy on its head. If you think differently then I can see why your voting for McCain. Say what you want about President Clinton's personal life, but the economy wasn't nearly as bad as it is today.
I agree that people should bash Republicans, but you can't sit there and say that the Democrats didn't help with this problem as well. In fact the housing bubble started with Clinton, and no party on either side of the aisle did anything about it. Both parties are incompetent. But, politically, if you're handed this, then you should use it. Dems are too soft on these Republicans, once I would love to see the Republicans ripped apart. Just for the satisfaction of it.
kind of weak argument there to ask why clinton took sides with a country that might have been pro-nazi during world war 2 years and years ago when it was serbia that was going around and starting ethnic cleansing during that current conflict at the time. also it wouldnt matter if one was pro-nazi and one was anti-nazi a long time ago as both were ruled by soviet russia for decades after nazi rule and thus both would have been strongly influenced by russia. as well as all of the former Yugoslavia
There is LOTS of proof that documents were falsified. Bush blames "bad intelligence", even though he used the reports that helped his case against Iraq, while hiding the reports that proved there were NO WMD's or any connection between Iraq and 9/11. Coincidence??
And its true that many lawmakers believed Bush's lies at the time, or supported him for political reasons. Obama DID NOT. During an October 2002 interview, Obama knew exactly what would happen if we invaded Iraq. Good judgment.
Do some research and don't believe McCain's lies. Please.
Politico reports at least 20 McCain's lobbyists got $12.3 million from FM/FM over last 9 years.
there isnt any official label for falsified documents is because FISA passed. This pretty much gives bush a free escape from any allegations of abuse of power or treason. And yes i know it was the democrates that passed this and this is an issue i dont agree with obama on at all. but back to the point because of fisa there cannot be any investigation on curveball or the 9/11 commission, even though it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out his administration lied on both of those reports.
indeed only a chairmen in the illinois senate but he still voted against it non the less. Bill and Hillary were never banging any drum over iraq unless your talking about the gulf war that was Bush Sr. not the clintons. and serbia was a bombardment of ammunitions dumps far off from an all out war between the US and Serbia as you claim. also Nato was the one mainly involved in splitting up the fight. and there is a huge difference between stopping violance and causeing an Unnecessary war.
The Republicans? Hahaha Obama has recieved three times the money (over 6 million) in contributions from wall street than McCain. Why is that? Because he was working so hard to stop them from all this crap?
No, its because the Democrats have been the biggest champs of giving out bullshit loans to minorities with bad credit that these companies made billions on and now the tax payers are picking up the tab.
Blame democRATS! The Clinton adm. opened the door for these bad loans. This has been building up for years. McShame warned of this and sent a letter to fellow members of the senate. Frank Raines made off with millions and now works for Obama. Criss Dodd and Charlie Rangel were in this up to their RAT noses. This is a pure example of the federal gov. sticking their nose in private buisness. The democRATS were buying votes. The medical buisness is next. Bush adm. should have stopped this long ago.
i give you partial credit for being right but see it was president bush that lied to them saying that oh what was it? oh yes! Iraq had "weapons of mass destruction" and he followed this with a completely falsified documents that just stated that iraq had some chemical substances and some tubbing and followed with even more falsified evidence. keep in mind some people like Obama voted against the war and wasnt just democrates even some republicans so i guess not all of the republicans are bad.
You missed the point. This is all a CYA drama by and for the guilty parties regardless of thier affiliation in order to hide from accountability. Bush and the whole crony power wheelers have made it appoint to bury the truth and cover the lies and deception if it cost the world. Remember 007? "The World is not Enough"
and how the hell does 9/11 have anything to do with lobbyists? unless you are meaning to talk about the events afterwards meaning the Iraq war then yes lobbysists had everything to do with the Iraq war when the republican dominated congress and president wanted to wage war on iraq while being payed out the ass by companies like haliburton, KBR, and many other big names that wanted to make a buck off our soldiers putting their lives on the line and lieing to all of us while their stockes go up.
Franklin Raines was never an adviser to obama or his campaign that was complete bullshit released by john mccains camp and the washington post. Right you are about james johnson but he stepped down and did little with obama's campaign other than the $4000 donation. Jamie Gorelick again like johnson has little to do with obamas campaign other than just a small donation where as mccain literally has lobbysists working for him right now. well so does obama but on a lesser scale.
Joe Biden is really Frank Drebin. Biden is a buffoon. Biden was caught plagarizing in law school, had to drop out of the 1988 presidential race because he plagarized from British labor leader Neil Kinnock, and has insulted Indians and blacks.
Leave it to the crooks of America to socialize investment losses.
Capital gains are worth nothing without a strong dollar. With our national debt exceeding $10Trillion, we are now officially all broke.
Ie, the real tax burden is a mirror of the national debt:
search United_States_public_debt on wiki
Consider the graph for the debt as a % of the GDP. Years 80-92 run amok, years 2000-now, I wonder what the total bill for the republican era will end up costing the US and taxpayers.
Hooray for the CEO president! Yeah! Heckuva job Bushie! Fat cats make bank, the rest of us get to pay for it! Nice job! Keating 5? Stock bubble? Mortgage crisis? Collapsing middle class? Wheee! let's do it again. Vote for Bush III
for the past decade the republicans had the house and congress and during that time we saw the largest decrease in jobs and value in our economy. we also saw the largest increase in debt. democrates only just got the house and congress back for a little more than a year and in that year its been deadlock with a republican conservative president. most of john mccains aids and economic advisers are former freddie mac and frannie mae people. the head of the republican party himself is a lobbyist.
f your reading this you cant stop.i'm mary,im 15.i have long black hair, no nose, black eyes, and a white dressif you dont send this to 5 comments in 5 minutes i wil come stend next to your bed with a nife and kill you if u do i will give u a prize
obama is saving his aggression for the debates trust me just watch i love you you need a show on msnbc and invite mostly young folks to speak like me a hip hop producer you is a union electrician and college student why isnt my perspective on this country continue to be ignored i have no children and is taxed heavily and dont really mind if it help other in my community why doesnt my opinion count, why arent polling me!!!!!!!
i don't know that biden's son is a lobbyist, but at this point dose that really matter? mccain's campain is so full of lobbyists its rediculous. and i'm not an econimist but for the republicans to start blaming this crisis on Obama is ludacris. i don't believe its all bushs fault either. it just happened under his watch. its a collection of greedy and incompotent men at the top, appointed by bush, who's idea of trickle down economics is to piss on u.
Don't forget that the republicans promise to cut taxes on the richest 5% while we face a record deficit. where do they get this magical money from? From china and even mexico! thanks republicans for puting "country first." also while we're at it we need to increase our government's borrowing limit because bush can't spend america's money fast enough. the fed prints money to make up for the rest which leads your our dollar being worthless. the decline of the $US vs $CA didn't start until 2003
Nearly? It's here. And the 'bailout' ain't savin it. That's Wall Street's escape hatch. You and I will be paying for it with higher taxes, higher interest rates, and higher prices.
It's not just that they attacked. It's that the media turned on the Palin nomination and McCain's lies. I'm sure the attacking played a role, but it made a huge swing slightly bigger.
easy: its obvious to anybody that the Repubs blew the economy + Obama has made it clear to the public. Its a matter of grace now not to become too aggressive and explotive on the issue when they need to focus to stabilize the economy again. Btw the democrats probably played their role in the crisis too with their involvement in Fanny Mae (not sure tho).
Garbage. Nader became the most idiotic person that ever lived when he stated there was no difference between Republicans and Democrats, and that was BEFORE 8 years of incompetent Republican fascism.
Sure there are rotten Democrats, but better to start with a partly rotten party than one that is 100% rotten like the Republicans.
Keep up the propaganda. Firstly, we weren't saved from anything, the financial turmoil was just put off for a little while. Secondly, its NOT a partisan issue, since BOTH parties are responsible for supporting the Federal Reserve's stated purpose of regulating the monetary supply and controlling interest rates. When was the last time a Democrat called for oversight of the Fed? They don't talk about it because they need the Fed to supply endless money for government spending.
over and over and over the republicans crowed about deregulation-no govt regulation ..let the market police itself . this is what we got from the last 3 republican admins 1. reagan- biggest deficiet in history and a 500 billion bailout on savings and loan. 2 bush 1- biggest deficiet and a recession. 3 bush 2 monster spending, huge deficiet, and the collapse of the mortgage sector that may well still cause a depression..
Try reading a bit about Austrian Business Cycle theory. It tends to explain booms/busts in the economy with clarity. Once you understand how the Fed manipulates interest rates and causes mis-allocation of capital, along with expansion of the money supply, you'll get why it has nothing to do with regulation.
Clinton was the unwitting beneficiary of a boom cycle. Still his surpluses were fake. Consider emergency spending and raiding of the Social Security fund (all off the book).
I'm definitely not here to defend Republicans. They run up huge deficits too and are complicit in the Federal Reserve's mischief the same as Dems. Do either major party candidates even mention the role of the Fed, oversight of it, or monetary policy whatsoever?
Bullshit..as paulson just got done saying, the main reason for this mess is a massive amount of loans given irresponsibly to people that had no ability to pay them back.. I go one futher, the greedy scumbags on wall street fraudently sold loans to millions, then covered it up by selling them to unsuspecting institutions.. now the chickens are coming home to roost.. Ill take clintons economy anytime compared to the utter mess thats happening now.lastly Stealing from s.s started with reagan
You understand nothing, flapperhead. This economy IS the Clinton's economy. Wall Street did not "fraudulently" sell mortgages; it was Clinton and the Congress that pushed for the weaker loan requirements to give morgages to those who could not afford them. That's what Fannie & Freddie were created for and it was mainly them who poisoned the financial market with bad loans.
typical, (tho i have no love for the dems,)EVERYTHING thats gone bad in the last decade is clintons fault..theres been a steady assault on money regulation for the last 30 yrs..most of it fueled by the continual drumbeat that somehow common sense regulation is bad..
I only mentioned Clinton, flapperhead, because of you nostalgic reference. I am not blaming him any more than Bush (probably even less, because it was in line with his ideology, while Bush betrayed conservative principles). But it is not just lifting the regulations that caused current debacle, but also the greater government involvement into financial matters via Fed's policies. It is the combination of both factors, which is so dangerous (and it was bi-partisan).
an assault on money regulation? What do you mean "money regulation?" You surely don't mean MONETARY POLICY regulation, because there is none of that. Congress, and both parties shirk their responsibility to coin money and hands it off to these privately owned banks, who they HAVE the power to oversee, but never do.
Regulation IS bad, because it prevents the market (YOU and me) from picking the winners and losers. Who do you think WRITES regulation?
you are a totally incompetent right wing nut with little ability to research. fannie mae didn't lower their loan requirements until 2000. in case you can't do the math that was under bush's watch. also it's hyper cheap money under bush's watch that caused this economic mess now. The fed was throwing cheap dollars around like monopoly money. greedy wall street used it to leverage themselves into huge debt. add dishonest credit rating agencies and the whole thing starts unravelling to what we have
"it's hyper cheap money under bush's watch that caused this economic mess now"
Whoah, did I miss the memo where Clinton raised interest rates and staved off credit expansion and inflation?
It was the expansion of the tech bubble DURING the Clinton years that is trying to unravel right now. Bush re-inflated it (housing bubble), and the larger problem (dollar bubble) goes back to the 70s and the breakdown of Bretton Woods.
read your memos immanent. you are repeating what i just said. the fed since 2001 has kept ridiculous low interest rates that inspired wall street to go to town with borrowed money that they can't possibly pay back now. i have not heard your ridiculous assertion that clinton caused this from ANY reputable economist. /watch?v=TIbD3BGoe5g if you want the explaination on the fancy tv shows.
You're right Libertarians got their heads up their asses, and for some reason they believe they're "Classical Liberals" when they're not, just like Republicans are not Conservatives and Democrats are not Liberals.
Classical Liberals (Libertarians) take extreme positions on Trade and General Welfare. The Conservatives are suppose to be in the Democratic Party and not in the Republican Party with Classical Liberals. Conservatives would never agree to the Libertarians extreme POV on "Free Trade".
that's what i just said. this happened under bush's administration not clinton's. Clinton raising interest rates as you said he did would have discouraged this lunacy our economy is in. So i don't know how you are blaming clinton for what even you say happened during bush's administration.
I think you're missing the point that the expansion of credit and subsequent boom was at its peak during the Clinton administration (tech bubble), and then again in Bush 2's first term. Why do you think it is that virtually none of the 2-party establishment leadership has questioned the Fed's expansion of credit over the last 30 years?
I don't blame just Clinton. I blame ALL of the bureaucrats in Congress and the executive branch for allowing this to go on. Its goes WAY back before 2001.
- Guru Economic Advisor to McCain and almost certainly his choice for Treasury Secretary (Wall Street Journal)
- Creator of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999, which reduced substantially financial regulations, and the reason why we have a financial crisis today.
- Famous for claiming that: "We have sort of become a Nation of Whiners"
- Also declared that we are not experiencing more than a "Mental Recession"
I have to disagree. The reason for the financial crisis is Federal Reserve expansion of credit and manipulation of interest rates, causing massive mis-allocation of capital.
If you really think the financial industry is deregulated, try reading through all of the SEC laws and regulations, and Sarbanex-Oxley.
It costs small business truckloads of money in legal fees to comply. Large corporations can easily absorb that cost, however.
The problem is the Fed policy AND the deregulation of derivatives trading, along with lax restrictions for the amount of leverage taken on. Institutions that can cause the whole system to crash need requirements to manage systemic risk. And if not for Sarbannes-Oxley, people might have bailed completely on investing in companies whose books you can't trust. That's the fault of large corps unfortunately, but trust is central to the corporate form of ownership.
expansion of the money supply is what causes prices to rise and wages to stagnate. Why do you think people can't afford to pay off those mortgages? Inflating the currency not only causes prices to rise, but also costs, debt enlargement, and mis-allocation of capital.
Now what's more likely? That all of those consequences led to the illiquidity, or that the banks realized the mortgages wouldn't be paid and went forward anyway?
I agree with shoryuken100. The problem had to be handled but I believe that Obama is going to light his ass up at the debates. Someone recently catagorized the Obama campaign as one of the most focused and aggressive dem campaign run in recent years and I have to agree. They have kind of a rope-a-dope style. Just when you think the latest smear/lie McCain has fucked him up he rises like a phoenix and carefully outlines for you just why he rocks and McPalin sucks.
please America do the rest of the world a service and elect a competent leader. Obama will be a push over by the republicans and fox news and Biden will be useless.
First off Cenk you clearly seem to look at things as a two party system and to always blame the one side. The fact is Obama wants us to unite and get out of this situation together. We can't do it alone no matter how hard you want to believe this is true. So I have to disagree with you on this one.
BTW, Obama has slammed McCain repeatedly on his remark about the economy being fundamentally sound, etc. You also have missed many attack ads that we've leveled against McCain.
I gotta agree with Cenk on this one. Dems and the leaders representing our party never have really faught or taken advantage of the clear advantages that we have in ways that the republican party has. This race shouldn't be as close as it is. Partly because we want to come off as the bigger man or a more noble party. That mind set has proven ineffective and while Obama does attack McCain he rarely attacks the republican party as a whole.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Uh-Uhbama lied about his PAC money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. His insiders Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines looted millions before running them into the ground. B. Hussein lied about the stimulus package not even showing up to vote. The same failed Eichmann, Darwinist, eugneics losers. Osamobama has NO RECORD, except hate the US Saul Alinsky, Acorn, Rezko, Ayers and Wright. Frank Nitty and Gotti were community organizers. B.Hussein and croonies will take their cut.
near global collapse? this is only the beginning. its all down hill from here. neither the democrats or republicans are going to fix this. because the only way to fix it is to let it die. they keep propping it up and making the problem worse.
Reasons Obama's non-partisain response was right: 1) YOU HAVE TO REASSURE INVESTORS! You have to show united government, period. 2) Attacking the day of the annoucement is political suicide. It would be like attacking during Hurricane Ike. 3) McCain attacked Obama. Attacking FEELS great, sure. But 97% of electorate is immobile, lol. So McCain looks like an ass and Obama looks like he's putting...Country First. THEN, the day after, Obama lashes out. TYT was waaaay off here. O was right.
When the country is tottering on the brink of financial collapse, your first instinct can not be to score political points -- you can't become Rove to beat Rove -- your first instict has to be to save the globe from becoming Mad Max Part II, lol. THEN, you can bash the GOP into small pieces...
No dice. It is quite possible to lay out a case that the Republican obsession with deregulation caused this mess, and that you better not vote for them unless you want more of the same, without coming off as deranged.
I want Obama to win as much as the next dem, but FACE IT: he's not Bill Clinton, he's not even Hillary Clinton, he's Carter, he's Dukakis. If he DID change now it would be like Gore '00 or Kerry '04 -- contrived as hell. Except for 3 speeches, Obama has been professorial and wonkish his entire career. I don't understand nominating someone b/c you hope they'll behave differently during the general, lol. The sooner the base gets behind Dukakis 08, the more in-tune we'll be with the candidacy..
let's all pause and recall when Gore, a fastidious and deliberate speaker, fell behind in the polls in 2000 and my girl Donna Brazile told him "get mad"! Let's all recall how jarring and superficial it was. Let's try to imagine Obama acting like Joe Biden on the stump. Let's imagine Obama orating like Biden on the day of the worst financial crisis since 1929, lol. I love liberals, but if that's what the base wants and that's when we want it, we understand campaign strategy for $#!t, lol..

The Dems. screwed up; not the REpubs.

you can't stop such a bad recession in a matter of months... it will get worse no matter who's in power.
Metsodok 2 years ago
No, if anything, you're the fucking moron. The banking collapse was caused by deregulation between 2000 and 2006. It takes months and even years for a country to recover from a recession after it has been announced, but you probably wouldn't know that because you're a dumb fuck conservative who typically fucks things up and blames the person who inherits that mess. Read up on economics and market trends before you point fingers my friend.
sockratees83 2 years ago
Yea, deregulated under Clinton in '99 by Bill Clinton and approved in the Senate by Chuck Schumer, John Kerry, Chris Dodd and Joe Biden with a vote of 90-8 dumbfuck. No new deregulation has occurred since. In fact, the Bush administration repeatedly called for more oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This is now all on your boy-Obama but by all means keep deflecting just like your boy-Obama and his left hand man/bitch Pelosi. The ball's in his court and he's obviously a failure.
mypsmells 2 years ago
No, its still you because you have no clue about the ideology of your party (hands off of business), and you call me stupid. That bill is right, but one drop doesn't make a rainstorm. There were scores of Republicans who called and got more deregulation during the early 2000's. But that's what you idiotic conservatives do, blame the other party and when you get caught, say it happened before you and hope that the person doesn't do their homework. So, take that idiot Palin and go away.
sockratees83 2 years ago

Now, go run along and let because this is an adult conversation, kids aren't welcome

BTW, while there are people like you in Congress, change will take a long time to come to Washington. Until then, carry on moron.

Douche.

2) The public does not know the facts (thanks to Bush), and would not support an impeachment.

kind of weak argument there to ask why clinton took sides with a country that might have been pro-nazi during world war 2 years and years ago when it was serbia that was going around and starting ethnic cleansing during that current conflict at the time. also it wouldnt matter if one was pro-nazi and one was anti-nazi a long time ago as both were ruled by soviet russia for decades after nazi rule and thus both would have been strongly influenced by russia. as well as all of the former Yugoslavia

And its true that many lawmakers believed Bush's lies at the time, or supported him for political reasons. Obama DID NOT. During an October 2002 interview, Obama knew exactly what would happen if we invaded Iraq. Good judgment.

and how the hell does 9/11 have anything to do with lobbyists? unless you are meaning to talk about the events afterwards meaning the Iraq war then yes lobbysists had everything to do with the Iraq war when the republican dominated congress and president wanted to wage war on iraq while being payed out the ass by companies like haliburton, KBR, and many other big names that wanted to make a buck off our soldiers putting their lives on the line and lieing to all of us while their stockes go up.

Years 80-92 run amok, years 2000-now, I wonder what the total bill for the republican era will end up costing the US and taxpayers.

for the past decade the republicans had the house and congress and during that time we saw the largest decrease in jobs and value in our economy. we also saw the largest increase in debt. democrates only just got the house and congress back for a little more than a year and in that year its been deadlock with a republican conservative president. most of john mccains aids and economic advisers are former freddie mac and frannie mae people. the head of the republican party himself is a lobbyist.

Bravo to those who see the forest for the trees. There is no difference in the false 2-party paradigm when it comes to critical issue areas, like:
- foreign interventionism
- domestic spying
- deficit spending & the debt
- monetary policy & the boom/bust cycle
- view of the Constitution as anachronistic or "living, breathing"

easy: its obvious to anybody that the Repubs blew the economy + Obama has made it clear to the public. Its a matter of grace now not to become too aggressive and explotive on the issue when they need to focus to stabilize the economy again. Btw the democrats probably played their role in the crisis too with their involvement in Fanny Mae (not sure tho).

They don't talk about it because they need the Fed to supply endless money for government spending.
immanent 3 years ago
actually Obama called for more regulation in 2006

over and over and over the republicans crowed about deregulation-no govt regulation ..let the market police itself . this is what we got from the last 3 republican admins 1. reagan- biggest deficiet in history and a 500 billion bailout on savings and loan. 2 bush 1- biggest deficiet and a recession. 3 bush 2 monster spending, huge deficiet, and the collapse of the mortgage sector that may well still cause a depression..
flapperhead 3 years ago 2
Try reading a bit about Austrian Business Cycle theory. It tends to explain booms/busts in the economy with clarity. Once you understand how the Fed manipulates interest rates and causes mis-allocation of capital, along with expansion of the money supply, you'll get why it has nothing to do with regulation.
Clinton was the unwitting beneficiary of a boom cycle. Still his surpluses were fake. Consider emergency spending and raiding of the Social Security fund (all off the book).
immanent 3 years ago
I'm definitely not here to defend Republicans. They run up huge deficits too and are complicit in the Federal Reserve's mischief the same as Dems. Do either major party candidates even mention the role of the Fed, oversight of it, or monetary policy whatsoever?
Never.

Ill take clintons economy anytime compared to the utter mess thats happening now.lastly Stealing from s.s started with reagan
flapperhead 3 years ago
You understand nothing, flapperhead. This economy IS the Clinton's economy. Wall Street did not "fraudulently" sell mortgages; it was Clinton and the Congress that pushed for the weaker loan requirements to give morgages to those who could not afford them. That's what Fannie & Freddie were created for and it was mainly them who poisoned the financial market with bad loans.
mltube 3 years ago
typical, (tho i have no love for the dems,)EVERYTHING thats gone bad in the last decade is clintons fault..theres been a steady assault on money regulation for the last 30 yrs..most of it fueled by the continual drumbeat that somehow common sense regulation is bad..
flapperhead 3 years ago
I only mentioned Clinton, flapperhead, because of you nostalgic reference. I am not blaming him any more than Bush (probably even less, because it was in line with his ideology, while Bush betrayed conservative principles). But it is not just lifting the regulations that caused current debacle, but also the greater government involvement into financial matters via Fed's policies. It is the combination of both factors, which is so dangerous (and it was bi-partisan).
mltube 3 years ago
an assault on money regulation?

The fed was throwing cheap dollars around like monopoly money. greedy wall street used it to leverage themselves into huge debt. add dishonest credit rating agencies and the whole thing starts unravelling to what we have
joesatube 3 years ago
"it's hyper cheap money under bush's watch that caused this economic mess now"
Whoah, did I miss the memo where Clinton raised interest rates and staved off credit expansion and inflation?
It was the expansion of the tech bubble DURING the Clinton years that is trying to unravel right now. Bush re-inflated it (housing bubble), and the larger problem (dollar bubble) goes back to the 70s and the breakdown of Bretton Woods.
immanent 3 years ago
read your memos immanent. you are repeating what i just said. the fed since 2001 has kept ridiculous low interest rates that inspired wall street to go to town with borrowed money that they can't possibly pay back now. i have not heard your ridiculous assertion that clinton caused this from ANY reputable economist.

Conservatives would never agree to the Libertarians extreme POV on "Free Trade".
dustynbones 3 years ago
Did you even read about Austrian Business Cycle theory, or did you come here to parrot what you heard on CNN or in the WSJ?
Yeah there were bad loans, but that is a SYMPTOM of the real problem, which is Fed-generated easy credit and mal-investment.
immanent 3 years ago
that's what i just said. this happened under bush's administration not clinton's. Clinton raising interest rates as you said he did would have discouraged this lunacy our economy is in. So i don't know how you are blaming clinton for what even you say happened during bush's administration.
joesatube 3 years ago
I think you're missing the point that the expansion of credit and subsequent boom was at its peak during the Clinton administration (tech bubble), and then again in Bush 2's first term. Why do you think it is that virtually none of the 2-party establishment leadership has questioned the Fed's expansion of credit over the last 30 years?
I don't blame just Clinton. I blame ALL of the bureaucrats in Congress and the executive branch for allowing this to go on. Its goes WAY back before 2001.

**** WHO HAS MENTAL RECESSION ? *********
One Name: Phil Gramm.
- Also declared that we are not experiencing more than a "Mental Recession"
honestlycorrect 3 years ago
I have to disagree. The reason for the financial crisis is Federal Reserve expansion of credit and manipulation of interest rates, causing massive mis-allocation of capital.
If you really think the financial industry is deregulated, try reading through all of the SEC laws and regulations, and Sarbanex-Oxley.
It costs small business truckloads of money in legal fees to comply. Large corporations can easily absorb that cost, however.
immanent 3 years ago
The problem is the Fed policy AND the deregulation of derivatives trading, along with lax restrictions for the amount of leverage taken on. Institutions that can cause the whole system to crash need requirements to manage systemic risk. And if not for Sarbannes-Oxley, people might have bailed completely on investing in companies whose books you can't trust. That's the fault of large corps unfortunately, but trust is central to the corporate form of ownership.
GrownupPhan 3 years ago
expansion of the money supply is what causes prices to rise and wages to stagnate. Why do you think people can't afford to pay off those mortgages? Inflating the currency not only causes prices to rise, but also costs, debt enlargement, and mis-allocation of capital.
Now what's more likely? That all of those consequences led to the illiquidity, or that the banks realized the mortgages wouldn't be paid and went forward anyway?
immanent 3 years ago
I agree with shoryuken100. The problem had to be handled but I believe that Obama is going to light his ass up at the debates. Someone recently catagorized the Obama campaign as one of the most focused and aggressive dem campaign run in recent years and I have to agree. They have kind of a rope-a-dope style.
You also have missed many attack ads that we've leveled against McCain.
glddraco 3 years ago
I gotta agree with Cenk on this one. Dems and the leaders representing our party never have really faught or taken advantage of the clear advantages that we have in ways that the republican party has. This race shouldn't be as close as it is. Partly because we want to come off as the bigger man or a more noble party. That mind set has proven ineffective and while Obama does attack McCain he rarely attacks the republican party as a whole.
