@fripouille69 Thanks for being such a gentleman. I was a mess boy on the flagship TÝR and was the only one who got hurt in that "war" when HMS Falmouth sailed full force into our ship two times, wrecking us for the rest of that conflict. It was a "miracle" that they didn't kill us all. No mercy in those days. All water under the bridge now though. ;)
@fripouille69 Come to think of it...we got hit three times that day and if I remember correctly it was the Gurkha or the Naiad that gave us a hole in the bow in the beginning, flooding the corridors by our cabins. The British press called us gunboats, but the fact was that everyone aboard were unarmed and we just had small, one shot gun dating from the 17. hundreds. It was actually safer to stand in front of it than behind it. :D
The truth of the matter is that your gunboats were cutting in front of our RN ships and playing very dangerous games. No British fisherman were ever threatened in the Cod Wars. The UK was the bully and the Icelandic people were only protecting what was rightfully theres. Imagine if Iceland had not moved the boundaries out to 200 miles then there would be no fish here today due to the greed of the UK fishing fleet. If you need proof on my reasoning then look into the declining stocks in UK/EU waters. Iceland was victorious then and is still today from many aspects including eh environmental one.
i totally agree with you trex...im ex navy, and a colleague i work with now, was on a destroyer then, and it was the correct action by the icelandic nation.

Thats because the little measly and small minded country it is has no other economic assests except for fish , now your banks have gone down what else do you have ?- keep your fish , we'll have our oil!!!
Have you heard about the Dreki oil field that Iceland has rights to along with 25% to Norway's side. So this little country has MUCH more oil then the UK. No other economic assets??? Hydrogen production. Geothermal and hydro power. Best fishing water in the world.
Look, okay you do have a good point there , but what I would say about these artic ocean oil fields is we dont really , yet anyway, have the technology to drill it up from such a depth - we have the same issue in the Falkland Islands in the Southern Ocean , and what I would say about your Geothermal and hydro power - once again , the you can provide for yourselves , but the tech is not advanced enough to mke it a marketing asset - The UK is a world power and very little is going to change that
Actually the technology does exist and coming this New Year Iceland will open a bid for exploration/drilling rights to that area to all the major oil companies.
We are not a superpower, no, and our energy production is suitable for only ourselves for now. But we are able to say with conviction that we are self sufficient and energy independent.

@trex250 Interesting economic prediction, unfortunately according to an article (a small one) in the Financial Times the future for Iceland is very bleak for generations to come. While just across the way Greenlands economy is booming
If you read the report by the OECD than the future is very bright for Iceland. Iceland has vast natural resources that the rest of Europe would die for. It is estimated that Iceland has saved over 1 trillion of it´s own currency by utilizing geothermal energy for heating. Otherwise Iceland would have spent this money on oil/natural gas. I will agree with the FT article ONLY if the total assets of Landsbanki claims falls below 40% Today this looks more like 90-95% So the future is bright indeed.
Is your "fascist treatment" comment aimed at me? If it is, I don't know if you understand English well but the first words of my comment were "Whatever the rights and wrongs of it all." In other words, I came here to talk as an ex-sailor doing his duty to other ex-sailors doing their duty. NO real sailor would blame a sailor on the other side for doing his duty. I did not come here to get involved in a political shouting match.
I apologize, I that was directed at someone else! I actually admire your level-headed approach to recounting your experiences and appreciate your compliment to our navy. Comments like that will win you many Icelandic friends! I was referring to the nasty approach the British government seems to have taken towards our investment troubles. We are not terrorists, and using anti-terror legislation to deal with our troubled assets was, I feel, not necessary. I have great respect for all sailors.
You know, I remember very clearly that there was absolutely no hostility whatsoever by those on my ship towards the Icelandic navy.
It may be difficult to understand for those who have not had a navy career but there really is so much respect between sailors of different countries. It's not just a myth. And your guys were excellent adversaries. Sometimes your guys got through the cordon, sometimes they didn't. It wasn't easy.
@IcelandPride You call our country fascists - the solution to your silly arrogant and rightwinged nations problems is to join the EU . It isn't so much the fact that we needed the fishing rights - were a world super power and have one of the biggest economies - its the principle of what you were doing ; thats what was wrong and you got a fair and just response - and you are bloody lucky that the RN dealt with you as they did I reckon they had every right to open fire on youthem
fuck them-they used guns on brit fishermen-they bragged about it. They cut nets when under tow-easily killed fishermen. they damaged cold war super ships with their shitty gun boats, their gunboat captains bragged about the icelanders being natural sailors -etc -wankers,and they appealed to the world that they were some sort of third world nation being bullied by GB. qute frankly you are technically known as a bunch of cunts
"no better perspective than from those who were there" you must have been a young man. and most definitely not aware of the bigger picture.
.you dit not know the British navy used tugs..before it was pointed out to you, I checked again.. there was at least 1 other tug.. Euroman."Pictures can be edited" you say
its easy to explain uncomfortable things saying this
its seams you are a typical Brit, setting up one standard himself and another for everybody else.
if you read my comments correctly you will see that my comments have been balanced and I have accepted there was fault on both sides. You however are making yourself appear a total extremist. For those of us there and those I have met with from 'both sides' there has been acceptance that the situation got out of hand and both sides did things we should not have done. I did know about the tugs and that they were brought in later for a reason as I explained.
Please do not call me names and show some maturity in your arguments which I am sure have merit, Otherwise how can anyone take anything you are saying seriously.
In fact I was 20 years old therefore not that young and certainly old enough to understand my environment and what was happening. It is one thing to want to win an argument, it is another to seek to understand what someone else is saying which you seem incapable of.

It was the Icelandic gun boats that began ramming boats, British frigates are hardly designed for that type of encounter and as a result many were badly damaged. When the Royal Navy sent similar types of boats to fend off the Icelandic gun boats inevitably collisions would occur. Unfortunately Iceland didnt like their own medicine and so opened fire on an unarmed British ship.. How you claim a victory for that is beyond me. Stick to shooting whales mate, they dont fire back.
I agree though that we should not now fall out over things like this that happened over 30 years ago. With respect have some respect for those who were there on both sides, doing their duty as they understood it.
I have shown no disrespect to the British navy, I have answered comments about the Icelanders bying a bunch of cowards, etc etc like that like that telstar guy is saying all over youtube,
the crew of Notts county does most certanly not agree on that,! . it was not only the Icelandic side that rammed the frigates a British Frigate HMS Falmouth hit VS Týr on its bow doing full speed 2 times it was a miracle it dit not sink the capitains of boath ships meet few years back and had friendly chat
This was not the only occasions when the British Frigates where responsible for crashes.I am not going into that now exept you want me to I am saying this only to state that it is far from the truth that only the Icelanders where responsible for rammings.
You miss my point. You seem so angry for someone who was never involved or there. Both sides were responsible for things taking place, and there is no better perspective than from those who were there. Show as many videos or pictures as you like, there are stories behind those pictures and it is easy to edit things. YOU WERE NOT THERE.
.. no I was not there, but family members of mine where how do you think it was following the when tugs and frigates ganged up on them,l
and then watch them comming to harbour all in tatters now all this years later called cowards by idiods like you .if you are saying the Icelandic responsable for every collision by cowardly behavior you are no better than a 16 year old

The only cowardly action that took place in the cod war was the Icelandic Gun boat firing on an unarmed boat. And then running for home when a british warship arrived.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If it were a War one of the Royal Navys Frigates could easily have sunk every Icelandic ship and totaled Iceland on its own. The restraint shown by the Brits is not mentioned though.
There weren't particularly any heros in this "war" The British went fishing, Iclandic ships invaded and bothered them cutting nets then the royal navy arrived to ram the bullys. It was a bit of a lazy effort its not as if there were any gun battles, then the iclandics cried to the US and britain and probably germany were told to go away.
On one occasion Gun boat Thor opened fire on a trawler [shot across the bows] HMS Galatea was deployed and authorised to use force if necessary. Fortunately it did not escalate further.
Politics aside, when vessels are rammed or have their nets cut, justification goes out of the window, tugs were used because so many frigates were seriously damaged - ours being one of them.
@badseed136 it was all about the cod...the maritime limit was extended 3 times by Iceland to control the fishing banks. Fishing was and continues to be Iceland's #1 economic activity. I recommend you read Mark Kurlansky's most excellent book "Cod".
No. not at all..for the english it is normal to steal other countries livelihood..they have done this for centuries all over the world..when nothing is left they leave the locals in missery and look for some other peoples recorces to steal.ask the newfoundlander. they regret that they dit not do like Iceland.. the English left a wasteland and caused huge social proplems..
I wouldnt say stupid, not stupid at all. Iceland was fighting England for the rights to fish in the waters around their little island. Funny would be a better Word, makes me laugh every time I think about it (and its usually when I think about this commercial hahaha), and I laugh even more When I think about How the Little Guy won! Great stuff
I was there in 1975 on HMS Galatea. We were so frustrated as Britain had no suitable ships to send at that time except multi million pound frigates with very thin skins. Should have sent Captain Birdseye. Mind you I did my bit, I threw some spuds at a gun boat!!
Sorry, you have no idea what you are talking about - I was there first hand, Leander class frigates were on the whole the type of ships the Royal Navy used in the 1975 Cod War, I suggest you check your facts - were you there?
You are correct, in fact the ship in question was an angry trawler that had had its nets cut, our wasp helicopter from the Galatea took the photograph. It was during the same period that HMS Bacchante had a forty foot gash ripped into her hull by gunboat Baldur. The tugs you mentioned, you are correct that later and toward the end of the conflict they used tugs due to the damage being inflicted on frigates that were totally inappropriate vessels to use.
I'm English myself but even i'm glad Iceland won. Typical greedy gouverment of ours wanting to take more than they are entitled too just because it's a smaller nation.
Saying that, The British army did defend a neutral declared Iceland in world war 2 from German Invasion so we're not all bad lol.
Yeah just look how the govenment of england murdered and pillaged the people of ireland for hundreds of years....in modern times it would nearly be considered systematic extermination or genocide...greedy english bastards.......
lol, it's such a shame Britain and Iceland don't have a closer relationship, after all most modern-day Brits have decended from Icelandic, Norwegian and Danish Vikings. But as can be seen in this video, don't mess with the Vikings!!!! They are born sailors and fighters.
Telstar...the crash beetween 1:00 and 1:05 in this video is this one of your precious guided missile destroyers?
the man on deck on the Icelandic ship.. is he a coward? I asked you before.. are you going to answer by spaming other Iceland video with insults as usual?
...I think you have misunderstood my question Anyway,... Guided missile destroyer... I don't think so... Destroyers are big ships.
.. Usually bigger than frigates which are usually around 120 m or more in length.
.is it possible its a British tug boat? ca 2000 ton tug?. Shape is all wrong ..but... you are the expert... I'm not a naval man like you , and I am glad you dit not involve my mother in your reply this time
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sounds like you have taken time off from reading your comics and code books and done some research on ships smegwalla. I thought I answered that question before for you. The ships the Brits used relied on missiles for offense and defence they only had one small gun (this was found to be a weakness in the Falklands war) so to call them a guided missile destroyer might not be technically correct but its also not incorrect either is it is ?.
If you can bear to hear the words you have spoken twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools Are you familiar with that poem smegwalla? Well thats pretty much how I see you, if you can tell me when or how I have insulted your parents plz show me. Because I know what your little game is mate, your trying to use a smokescreen to distract from the main argument that you are loosing sleep over.
But lets stay on topic its a simple question is the ship I mentioned a thin hull destroyer as you have said was used by the British. navy..they type the Icelandic cowards Atacet (acording to you) or is this a big British tug boat with a very thick hull?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
From that video you cant tell anything! , I dont even know which ships are which if you base all your arguments on some grainy film you are a bigger fool than I suspected smegwalla. Try and get some sleep your getting desperate mate.
Go Iceland. You guys are excellent examples as to why Canada is going through a Cod moratorium right now. They bitch and complain that it wasn't them who decimated their Cod. So, I always put it in their face that's no excuse since Iceland nearly went to war with England to protect their Cod. Now, Canada is trying to replace lost income by butchering hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals for fur. Ha ha! What a desperate society wont do.
and stop calling the others stupid just because they are saying u got owned. hmm maybe u can't say that u got owned or.. naah im just kiding YOU GAT OWNED YOU GAT OWNED
Silly4ever you are 22year old child, who has never seen any action, but plays computer games and thinks he is a man because he likes to insult people from the safety of a computer. have you got nothing better to do than post all these comments? Now my little Danish Twat, Knowing many Danes and travelling to Denmark many times in my career, I know the Danes are gentle and friendly folk. But I guess there village idiots everywhere eh?
And before I leave you to your sad little life where the fuck did you lift this from:
'Iceland achieved its overall aims, to the detriment of the already declining British fisheries, severely affecting the economies of northern fishing ports in the UK, such as Grimsby, Hull and Fleetwood. '
Because it is sure too lucid for an uneducated spotty little shit like yourself to have thought up.

Thats because the little measly and small minded country it is has no other economic assests except for fish , now your banks have gone down what else do you have ?- keep your fish , we'll have our oil!!!
sailingforde04 2 years ago
Have you heard about the Dreki oil field that Iceland has rights to along with 25% to Norway's side. So this little country has MUCH more oil then the UK. No other economic assets??? Hydrogen production. Geothermal and hydro power. Best fishing water in the world.
trex250 2 years ago 7
Look, okay you do have a good point there , but what I would say about these artic ocean oil fields is we dont really , yet anyway, have the technology to drill it up from such a depth - we have the same issue in the Falkland Islands in the Southern Ocean , and what I would say about your Geothermal and hydro power - once again , the you can provide for yourselves , but the tech is not advanced enough to mke it a marketing asset - The UK is a world power and very little is going to change that
sailingforde04 2 years ago
Actually the technology does exist and coming this New Year Iceland will open a bid for exploration/drilling rights to that area to all the major oil companies.

@trex250 Interesting economic prediction, unfortunately according to an article (a small one) in the Financial Times the future for Iceland is very bleak for generations to come. While just across the way Greenlands economy is booming
telstar9 2 years ago
If you read the report by the OECD than the future is very bright for Iceland. Iceland has vast natural resources that the rest of Europe would die for. It is estimated that Iceland has saved over 1 trillion of it´s own currency by utilizing geothermal energy for heating. Otherwise Iceland would have spent this money on oil/natural gas. I will agree with the FT article ONLY if the total assets of Landsbanki claims falls below 40% Today this looks more like 90-95% So the future is bright indeed.

Iceland pride,
Is your "fascist treatment" comment aimed at me? If it is, I don't know if you understand English well but the first words of my comment were "Whatever the rights and wrongs of it all." In other words, I came here to talk as an ex-sailor doing his duty to other ex-sailors doing their duty. NO real sailor would blame a sailor on the other side for doing his duty. I did not come here to get involved in a political shouting match.
Thanks.
fripouille69 2 years ago
I apologize, I that was directed at someone else! I actually admire your level-headed approach to recounting your experiences and appreciate your compliment to our navy. Comments like that will win you many Icelandic friends! I was referring to the nasty approach the British government seems to have taken towards our investment troubles. We are not terrorists, and using anti-terror legislation to deal with our troubled assets was, I feel, not necessary. I have great respect for all sailors.
IcelandPride 2 years ago
No problem.
They were doing their job, as were we.
fripouille69 2 years ago 2
@IcelandPride You call our country fascists - the solution to your silly arrogant and rightwinged nations problems is to join the EU . It isn't so much the fact that we needed the fishing rights - were a world super power and have one of the biggest economies - its the principle of what you were doing ; thats what was wrong and you got a fair and just response - and you are bloody lucky that the RN dealt with you as they did I reckon they had every right to open fire on youthem

fuck them-they used guns on brit fishermen-they bragged about it. They cut nets when under tow-easily killed fishermen. they damaged cold war super ships with their shitty gun boats, their gunboat captains bragged about the icelanders being natural sailors -etc -wankers,and they appealed to the world that they were some sort of third world nation being bullied by GB. qute frankly you are technically known as a bunch of cunts
toonmag50 2 years ago
there are no records or any icelander killing a british person. the only shots fired by the icelanders where after a british ship rammed them.

"no better perspective than from those who were there" you must have been a young man. and most definitely not aware of the bigger picture.
.you dit not know the British navy used tugs..before it was pointed out to you, I checked again.. there was at least 1 other tug.. Euroman."Pictures can be edited" you say
its easy to explain uncomfortable things saying this
its seams you are a typical Brit, setting up one standard himself and another for everybody else.
sgnewa 2 years ago 3
if you read my comments correctly you will see that my comments have been balanced and I have accepted there was fault on both sides. You however are making yourself appear a total extremist. For those of us there and those I have met with from 'both sides' there has been acceptance that the situation got out of hand and both sides did things we should not have done. I did know about the tugs and that they were brought in later for a reason as I explained.

Stick to shooting whales mate, they dont fire back.
telstar9 2 years ago
I agree though that we should not now fall out over things like this that happened over 30 years ago. With respect have some respect for those who were there on both sides, doing their duty as they understood it.
crabb50 2 years ago
I have shown no disrespect to the British navy, I have answered comments about the Icelanders bying a bunch of cowards, etc etc like that like that telstar guy is saying all over youtube,
the crew of Notts county does most certanly not agree on that,! . it was not only the Icelandic side that rammed the frigates a British Frigate HMS Falmouth hit VS Týr on its bow doing full speed 2 times it was a miracle it dit not sink the capitains of boath ships meet few years back and had friendly chat
sgnewa 2 years ago 2
This was not the only occasions when the British Frigates where responsible for crashes.I am not going into that now exept you want me to I am saying this only to state that it is far from the truth that only the Icelanders where responsible for rammings.
sgnewa 2 years ago 2
You miss my point. You seem so angry for someone who was never involved or there. Both sides were responsible for things taking place, and there is no better perspective than from those who were there. Show as many videos or pictures as you like, there are stories behind those pictures and it is easy to edit things. YOU WERE NOT THERE.
crabb50 2 years ago
It seams to my that you are the angry one.,,,
.. no I was not there, but family members of mine where how do you think it was following the when tugs and frigates ganged up on them,l
and then watch them comming to harbour all in tatters now all this years later called cowards by idiods like you .if you are saying the Icelandic responsable for every collision by cowardly behavior you are no better than a 16 year old

The only cowardly action that took place in the cod war was the Icelandic Gun boat firing on an unarmed boat. And then running for home when a british warship arrived.

If it were a War one of the Royal Navys Frigates could easily have sunk every Icelandic ship and totaled Iceland on its own. The restraint shown by the Brits is not mentioned though.

. it would be great to hear the British versin of what happened 11-desember-1975..I am sure its something about superior British heros..
sgnewa 2 years ago
There weren't particularly any heros in this "war" The British went fishing, Iclandic ships invaded and bothered them cutting nets then the royal navy arrived to ram the bullys. It was a bit of a lazy effort its not as if there were any gun battles, then the iclandics cried to the US and britain and probably germany were told to go away.

On one occasion Gun boat Thor opened fire on a trawler [shot across the bows] HMS Galatea was deployed and authorised to use force if necessary. Fortunately it did not escalate further.
crabb50 2 years ago
Politics aside, when vessels are rammed or have their nets cut, justification goes out of the window, tugs were used because so many frigates were seriously damaged - ours being one of them.

Great stuff
Moopies 2 years ago 4
I was there in 1975 on HMS Galatea. We were so frustrated as Britain had no suitable ships to send at that time except multi million pound frigates with very thin skins. Should have sent Captain Birdseye. Mind you I did my bit, I threw some spuds at a gun boat!!
crabb50 2 years ago
How can you say this when it is well known that you used huge tugs? they biggest and thick hulled ones in the world back then !!!
sgnewa 2 years ago
Sorry, you have no idea what you are talking about - I was there first hand, Leander class frigates were on the whole the type of ships the Royal Navy used in the 1975 Cod War, I suggest you check your facts - were you there?
crabb50 2 years ago
No not old enough, but I do no what I am talking about
and I dit check, names of tugs, Star Aquarius Star Polaris, and Loydsman,
they even oparated insude Icelandic fjord on
ones the Icelandic ship they rammed was close to sinking after being rammed by them many times, its fact
sgnewa 2 years ago 2
Just watch the crash beetween 1:00 and 1:05 in this video.
see how damaged the Icelandic ship is, its amazing the guy on deck survived, this British ship is most defenetly no frigate
sgnewa 2 years ago 2
You are correct, in fact the ship in question was an angry trawler that had had its nets cut, our wasp helicopter from the Galatea took the photograph. It was during the same period that HMS Bacchante had a forty foot gash ripped into her hull by gunboat Baldur. The tugs you mentioned, you are correct that later and toward the end of the conflict they used tugs due to the damage being inflicted on frigates that were totally inappropriate vessels to use.

Just look at how the Chinese empire to THIS day supresses Tibet, and how Tibets own gouverment used to make lampshades out of babies skin.
Just look at how Japan tried to exterminate china.
Look at Germany and the Jews.
