i always loved this scene.the umbrella was a metaphor for the protection the upper and middle classes had i believe, they stole his umbrella/protection.
Just watched the film this morning, very true, Samuel West is excellent in this as he is in other things, we dont see enough of him in film, but this was a great role for him.
'There simply aren't enough movies like this'. How TRUE greger1! Are you aware of Sam West's versatility? Did you know for example, he's narrated tv documentaries in Britain, done radio work etc. Also, his father, Timothy West, is a fine actor himself, having played some marvelous parts on stage and screen over the years. So talent does seem to run in the family. As for 'fine taste'? I suppose subjectivity is the 'name of the game', really. However, I think I know what you mean! Bring it on!
@greger1 When visiting after Mrs. Bast calls he is very charming. He grows more animated as he talks about his walk into the country. You can see both of the Schlegel sisters falling in love with him. This story has always cut deep into me. Charles Wilcox is horrible. He is such a bully and a beast. I don't think I could ever be happy in such a culture as that time. Could you?
Actually, the line is, "If you'll pardon me, Miss..." He says it quickly, but, the will is there, all the same. Anyway, I love this scene. Very poignant, thanks to Sam's subtleties.
YAY!!!! first comment!!!! i don't know what this is (WHAT IS IT) but the umbrella woman looks like the transvestite from little britian, lol! "oh i do nothing but steal umbrellas"" lmao!!!
Heehee. It's a scene from a movie called "Howard's End" starring Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonam Carter (the transvestite apparantly :P) and Samuel West. One of my favourite films.
Uhh hhe also played alongside with Emma in Carrington ^^
Gosh he is so sweet in Howard's end ^^

I adore this movie. Simply superb acting all around. Not a digitally animated figure, scenery or voices to be found.

Aren't these women a pair of stuck up tarts? How very English.

Sam West is simply amazing in this. Tortured, awkward and mercurial. Even his postures when walking are consistent with his mood swings.
There simply aren't enough movies like this.
I love it that I live in a world with so many fans with taste. Thanks, Isserley, for posting and everyone for commenting.

"Sam West is simply amazing in this."
Agreed. Every time I watch this, I'm more amazed by how touching Sam West's performance is, how nuanced, how perfect in every detail.
