  • Actually... if you compare the raw-files, the Nikon 1 sensor beats the crap out of m43 sensors.. AND the AF i is lightyears faster then any mirrorless camera..

AND it takes many times more frames per second then any other mirrorless camera..

AND it looks ALOT more sexy then any other mirrorless camera..

I cannot find any reason to buy any other mirrorless camera then a Nikon 1.

  • Mostly agree, but come on, it's cost price cannot be like you said, around 25% of the market price. Because it's new design, new circuitry, including sensor and image processor (although expeed is there, they need to incorporate it into silicon anew, so it's costly), there're new lens designs that cost money etc. Otherwise, I agree, 1 is a strange thing, I would rather have x100.

  • I prefer the EP3

  • I agree with you 100% great video :)

  • New lens system = new way to force people to buy new, cheap-to-build-expensive-to-buy lenses...

  • te lans adapter was already reseased when the 1 cameras were.

  • @doormat321 what's the price?

  • @Dombowerphoto Im not sure but they were released to the press at the same time. Im realy not sure if they are reeleasing them in the UK at the same time.

  • I just bought a 2nd hand Olympus pen epl1 and Nikon lens adapter for around 130 quid. Works great with my F1.8 nifty fifty and is much much cheaper than this 1 series.

  • whats a nekon

  • For the price of theV1 you could buy a D5100 with a great lens instead. And it'll last you much longer! :)

  • totally agreeing with you Dom!

  • I don't get both of these cameras. Use your phone, or buy a D700. There's no other option for me :-)

When you think about it Point and shots will die as phone cameras become better. The average joe will use a phone only to snap shots, most don't see the difference anyway since the stuff they do is just snap a few pics. The pro or advanced amatuer will use a DSLR or equiv.

  • @arubaforever exactly. PLUS just like people have instant capabilities of uploading their pictures to facebook and other webpages through the use of their phones. Point and shoots have their fate slowly, but surely, approaching them.

I use my phone to take the snap shots and use the beefier DSLR for the pro type stuff...don't understand this nikon camera at all, especially the price.

  • Don't know why anyone would get this camera (V1) as opposed to picking up a D5100. Perhaps that's the underlying strategy. Put something rediculous on the menu to phychologically drive customers to the item (D5100) they wanted you to buy in the first place. This is an age old technique. I am still overly disappointed after waiting so long for the "Nikon Announcement". I was hoping for the D800 as many others were. And they release more 'box' cameras. :-(

    Very disappointing.

  • it's called Micro four thirds my friend. and, I think....it's a complete waste of money for now. All we can do now, is to just give them time. Sony changed their SLR's into SLT's. I see no reason why these cameras can't be successful. But obviously, they'll have to reduce the price....

  • Nikon has produced a product for which there in no demand. Not the first time, won't be the last.

  • I bet this camera was designed more for video than photos. Look at the 10-100 lens. It has power zoom with 3 speeds. That is not for photography, and you dont make a $750 video lens for something that doesnt shoot good video. Then look at the AF, the processor speed, video noise reduction, and the ability to shoot stills while recording. Youtubers use Canon DSLRs to shoot, this is Nikon trying to take some of this market. My prediction, next version will shoot video in RAW.

  • can fit current nikon lenses, there is an adaptor shown in one of nikons demo vids where they have a 70-200 f2.8 on the V1

  • i think they also want to test out the new processor for the big guys like d800 and d4

  • Ok this is a really beginner question, and it has nothing to do with this video but, I need fisheye help. What is wider a .3x fisheye or somehting like a .7x fisheye?

  • Brilliant!

  • While I personally could never justify the cost of either of the Nikon, surely they are just entering the interchangeable lens compact market with Olympus, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung?

  • Hi Dom, I'm in two minds with this one if I'm honest. As a Nikon SLR shooter I have lots of gear that weighs an absolute ton to carry about all of the time. So I forked out £300 and got myself an Olympus E-P1 with 17mm f/2.8 lens. This is brilliant because I now have a small camera that can be with me at all times, but has a large enough sensor to give me good quality photos and the option on a different lens should I decide to change my 17mm.

While I personally could never justify the costs of

  • @jswebbo Good choice with the E-P1. As a Nikon shooter as well, I got myself an E-PM1. Nikon dropped the ball big time on this one.

  • You can buy a sony nex for around 300...

  • One benefit this camera does have is the ability to 'spray & pray' - that is, take a close series of shots and have the camera pick the ones which are exposed correctly, with less motion blur and in focus. For casual shooters who aren't kidding themselves about their shooting ability (unlike some M4/3 toting 'enthusiasts'), this is a genuine benefit when shooting moving subjects or get one chance for a particular shot - like at a wedding or event.

  • My local camera shop (LEX) has the V1 kit for £979.00. My jaw hit the floor.

You could buy a D7000 and 35mm f1.8 for less than that.

I get that mirrorless cameras will replace compacts in the future, and M4/3 etc are really quite good.

But i just don't get these Nikon 1 Series.

  • The Nikon 1 is to replace the coolpix, smart phones have already proven that compact cameras are going extinct. But I agree it should go down in price.

  • BTW: I'm also very glad that you are not political correct and hanging out the Nikon fan-boy. (No offend guys, I like both Nikon AND Canon.)

  • i think what people fail to see as pants as these are for fellow DSLR shooters their is method in nikons madness, mark my words these are test beds for what will eventually be in our DSLR's, in years to come, test out the bugs and fine tune it until its ready to go into dslr's and use the compact camera market to test it out just my opinion of course.

  • they wanted to copy Leica which is doing great things with this type of camera

  • They should have been focusing on making a new flagship DSLR to compete with the Canon 1D-X(pensive)

  • EVIL cameras have been now for a while .. its not something new ... Nikon has decided to jump in the mirrorless camera race for no logical reason !!

  • there is an adapter you can get so the 1 series cameras will accept the F mount lenses.

  • Nikon's new on sensor auto focus is the real story with this camera. If Nikon starts working hard on improving EVF technology we could be looking at the DSLR being relegated to history and everyone using similar sized, mirror-less cameras. Mirror-less is the future and this camera is a stepping stone on that path.

  • @Dombowerphoto So true man. What was Nikon thinking? Really can't they put their brains and money on giving us something more affordable.

  • Great rant dom, that does look like the most pointless range of cameras ever.

  • Hi Dom,

You can buy an adapter that lets you use your usual DSLR Nikkor lenses on these cameras. It's called the FT1.

I still wouldn't buy either of these camera's!! Much cheaper to buy a decent DSLR.

    Mike.

  • This is the most entertaining rant I've heard in while! Thanks for making me smile, Dom :)

  • Hey Dom, I think you and I were separated at birth or something because we think much alike.

I own a Canon G11 that I purchased last year for my honeymoon trip to Italy. I chose it because I wanted something small(as opposed to taking my SLR/lenses) with great image quality, yet small enough to not be a burden when having it on me. Introducing a interchangeable lens system on a small camera defeats the the purpose. Can't believe Nikon also bought into the gimmick.

  • At least you're not selling out like other YouTube Nikonians.

  • Nikon is just wasting time for this crap J1 and V1 then Canon release their EOS 1D X....! c'mon nikon what the hell are you doin'....!!!!!!!!

  • When I saw the V1 and J1 I actually thought it was a joke or a crappy rumour.

Olympus ep-1 is much better especially when paired with a panasonic 20mm f1.7, a brilliant fast little lens.

  • If Nikon had made an aps-c based mirrorless camera similar to the Sony NEX-7, I think it would have been more appealing. Lack of lenses and the sony flash system put me off the NEX system. What would be great would be for someone to develop a full frame mirrorless system either rangefinder (a la Leica) or EVF (a la Sony). My ultimate camera would be a medium format digital Mamiya 7!

  • What about the FUJI x10? :D

  • @gotmegud that at least looks retro, has a fixed lens and is a lot cheaper, also has 12mp, and an f2.0 max aperture

  • @Dombowerphoto i like the fuji at least all the dials are very accessible. my eye dun have to leave the view finder to adjust the shutter speed and aperture. i dun think the N1 and J1 of the sony or GF3 can do this.

  • @gotmegud Yeah I was looking at the price point of the V1 and was full of "HAHAHA, no really, how much?"

  • @gotmegud - I agree - the X10 signals the demise of the Canon G series, the Nikon Pxxx series, and the Nikon 1 doesn't have any significant benefits over anything.

  • I don't think Nikon priced this camera due to it being worth that amount... I think they did price to gain extra money to make up their losses from the Japan Earthquake.

I was considering purchasing a extra Batter for my D7000, it was once £39.99, I recently looked, it was hiked up to £79.99. Their prices fluctuate, and I think it'll go down soon...

  • For short: This is a Nikon marketing fail.

BTW the black one looks ugly.

  • Sony and the NE X line up must be laughing all the way to the bank. With the NEX 7 coming soon Sony has the market wrapped up in regards to mirrorless 4/3 cameras. nikon 1 is probably the biggest mistake Nikon have made yet. Oh dear!

  • looks shite and i bet it feels shite, why did they bother, all that cash for a glorified point and shoot

  • 6:16 I think of the traveling photographers would the target audience?

  • Hi Dom, your theory £150 to make, should sell for £250, would that not mean the camera would make a £50 loss on each camera?

I do agree it is an expensive camera, with a small sensor.

  • photographer: dam my d90 is long due for an upgrade however i think ill wait for the d800 to come out

nikon: WERE GONNA RELEASE A NEW CAMERA

photographer: SICK, nikon d800 here i come!

nikon: JK its a shitty bridge camera

  • @MegaAfroGuy Lol! I imagine Nikon had a troll face when they released the J1 & V1.

  • For these prices you get some very decent DSLR's. Just like you, Dom, I don't see for what kind of users they are made. Is it for people who want a point of shoot but also want to look as if they know something about camera's by changing lenses and want to set themselves apart from point and shoot users?

My guess is, as you said, that Nikon wants to create a new market here. However, I think it's expensive crap and I love my heavy gear.

  • @mariokluser agree with what you said. I think Nikon is trying to bring out their new system like how the micro 4/3 did. But they did it in the wrong time especially when the market is alreay flooded with M4/3 cameras are so cheap. the V1 and J1 will find themselves very difficult to stand a place in the current market. but time will tell

  • Olympus has been doing this for 3 ish years with the pen micro 4/3rds system.... I think theirs has a nice vintage charm and much better aesthetics but I'd still never buy one.

  • @Dombowerphoto Lol! I actually said the exact same thing as you at 6:34. The market demands for a large sensor compact with tiny lenses with good image quality. The only people interested in a J1/V1 is someone with more money than common sense.

Currently Sony has the most fantastic sensors but with few quality lenses and much larger lenses than the competition. m4/3 is where the best compromise in IQ, lens size and selection is at right now.

  • its just a bunch of crap to keep people looking for a real camera like the D800

  • sigh. . . . Nikon missed the mark with these "things".

  • been waiting for this hahaha stupid cameras.. hopefully they only put them out to buy time for their pro bodies

  • sounds like a useless camera.

  • i don't get it. all of a sudden all the companies are trying to take out leica with these small interchangeable lens cameras. I honestly think that most people that know enough about dslr's are gonna look away from these nikon 1 cameras. it's my thought that since camera phones are replacing the regular point and shoots, the companies are going after the next level that won't trespass too much into the dslr range. but they're gonna peddle them like the cheap point & shoots nobody buys anymore.

  • I agree with you Dom. Too m expensive and most importantly smaller sensor which will lead to least D.O.F :)

  • @antonioreyes1987 technically more DOF ;)

  • @gtochad LOL! Sorry for the typo. Actually is more D.O.F :D

  • I'd rather buy a d5100 over the V1 , or save a few more bucks and get a d7000

  • lmao @ 2:10

  • it is actually 2/3 inch sensor and no way it can do 60 frames per sec. it is actually 10fps. one thing you are sooooo right is nikon 1 is really disappointing.

  • @suxusun my bad,on dpreview it says 10fps... it can do 60fps in electronic shutter mode.

  • it shoots at an equivelent of 60fps, the buffer fills after about 15

  • Good Points

  • Thanks for a good video today Dom, and thanks for throwing an axe at your Fotopro monopod in the previous video, it made me feel better.

  • To clarify, I don't believe it can actually get to 60 frames @60FPS, the buffer fills after like 12-15 frames, but it takes those frames at 60fps speed.

  • i know dom, i bought my d3100 with kit lens for 589 including tax. the size of these are comparable to a d3100 with a 35mm or 50mm prime lens. but i suppose nikon knows what their doing, i guess people are buying them.

  • The single reason it will never compete with Sony NEX cameras and such? It has a tiny sensor.... which really is the most bizarre thing about it.

  • when is the new slr coming

  • Put that sensor in a P7100, upgrade the lens to something mildly decent, cut the price in half and then maybe -just maybe- I may consider it.

It's just another way to get more money out of your pocket.

  • Mmm odd cameras indeed I seen some reviews and some results. It makes nice pictures. Better then most compacts yes but seriously I dunno if this is the way to go for Nikon.

But maybe just maybe they are right and something this size and this weight with better then compact camera will work. Maybe...

Maybe it will fail! It certainly isn't like a Sony NEX or one of those nice nifty Fourt Third models. Yes they are bigger and heavier but you know ..

    I just don't know!

  • These new Nikons are an exercise in technological masturbation. Nothing more.

  • i know i'm not buying this...

  • but u are right, they will just look after high numbers

if u are into controlling everytheng, postproduction, shooting raw and cropping its not the camera u want anyway

  • i really don't understand why they didn't make it a aps-c size sensor

at the latest in some years, they have to make a mirrorless aps-c when the evf is fast enough, why not now?

looking at the pictures, it just looks like better point and shoot ones, no shellow depth of field

10 MP is enough i think, especialy if they aim to sell it to wealthy point and shoot people, they don't do much with the pictures anyway, maybe showing it on the HD TV

  • I think it's nikon attempting to get into the mirrorless camera market. It's a relatively new market but I think they're trying to go for the journalists who want performance in a small an unintimidating body for some journalism work like street photography. It's all pretty new so let's see how it goes.

  • 9:48 - 9:55 made me lol

  • silly prices like the 4/3 Micros, most will get an slr

  • I totally agree... i can't understand why they went with such a small sensor. It gets beat by the micro 4/3'rd cameras, and utterly killed by the sony nex aps-c sized sensors in the same sized body.

  • @rticknor

The only thing so far going for it is the size.. and the smaller fourth third are kinda equal sized. Mmm yeah $800 really

Of course it is better then the Pentax Q system...

  • I think that the "EVIL" cameras market is really growing and nikon just want to have a piece of that. Cameras like the GF2 and the sony NEX system are doing rather well and these types of systems have their appeal. I don't see anyone getting them instead of a DSLR but certainly as an upgrade from a normal point and shoot. But still, it sounds way too expensive to compete with the cameras that are already out there.

  • Any idiot who effectively chooses a v1 over a very closely priced D7000 is just that of this whole new system. A fucking retard.

  • Excellent rant Dom !

I get there is a place for the Mirror-less camera system but this just looks like a massive miss step to me . Features a family orientated consumer might want but at a price no one could ( should ) accept .

  • CSC are red hot now, for better or for worse, so Nikon decided to jump in, hoping to sell some based on their name. I've played with a J1 and I honestly found the Olympus Pen Mini a bit more responsive, and I'd rather get that one instead. Just like the Pen Mini, though, the market for this camera is really niche, and you're completely right saying these things are very expensive. Unless they can give better performance for a lower price, most people will look elsewhere.

  • throw your iphone in the bin Problem solved :) sorted

  • I believe with what Fro Knows Photo has to say about this move by Nikon. He said that the new technologies that Nikon employs here will find there way up to our beloved DSLR's. Makes sense to me

  • But I agree with Dom to this camera is ridiculous and I see no reason why someone would pay that much for this@MrYerbaMate1

  • I think you have got a really good point in here ! "No body actually want this camera"

  • 1:49...LMAO!!

  • I think it's a step in the wrong direction for Nikon.
