@mrgetsoff83 it is called greed. money over humanity. Then possibly the Somalia f--- up during GHWB era, payback for the BS that happened over there but then again it is only speculation. Either ways wrong is wrong right is right.
none knows y piracy started its because other countrys dump toxic waste there and take our fish some people got illness that theres no medicne 4 so fuck the rest of the countrys that do that
all u people care about is money....i hope they steal everything from u fucks who go into somali waters ok? u got it i hope they take everything for the fishermen have no living now fucker....the fish are dead or sick and i found out that u cant e ver swim! in some parts, fuck u!!
legitimacy to piracy no, everybody understands that! These fleets are breaking international law. You have european companies sailing under belize, honduras, so they can avoid EU-regulation. Japanese, saudi, yemeni and koreans fleets are using the chaos in Somalia to their advantage. The only side we have to take is that of the truth. We Africans don't want to take hostages. Those who do are criminals! But we can not sit idle while we are being robbed either.
@batse1 true, but I would imagine this has something to do with baser instincts of survival and to get the attention of the world. Halting commercial traffic certainly gotten the world's undivided attention, not a good attention but it is an attention nonetheless.
The EU paid a Somalian war lord $10 per ton to dump medical and nuclear waste off the coast. He was paid $80 million dollars. In 2004, the tsunami washed all the waste ashore. The cancer rate has skyrocketed because of the waste. Their livlihood vanished. Americans are not told of these things...they are sold a bill of goods no different than the WMD story of Iraq. PNAC declared Africa "America's final frontier". 65% of Americans want to invade. They learned nothing.
When will you learn? Invaded Vietnam because a ship was attacked...only it wasnt. Iraq invaded because of WMDs...only there werent any. Now the Pentagon is preparing a plan for ground troops to enter Somalia. A "pirate" fades into the population once on land. Will the Pentagon kill millions of Somalians looking for pirates on shore? How many years will this go on until Americans tire of this war?
Being a journalist does give you special privileges- that of an objective observer of events, Journalists covering an event should not be treated the same as protesters (or as authorities from the protesters side) they are there to report not take sides.
Where in the First Amendment does it say journalists get special privileges.
Journalists like to pretend that they speak truth to power and point out when someone is wrong. But if they do not like when you do the same to them such as pointing out the slanted coverage of the Duke Lacrosse hoax. Journalists scream you are violating their First Amendment rights.
upabittoolate: this isn't the only place I've been reading about this; in fact, the UK Independent seemed to have broken the story on this just over the weekend. I would take this seriously.
i feel you. i've know about it for a few years now myself. that's part of the reason i subscribe to bbc news & aljazeera. but you better believe that there's some bnuts who'll interpret this as spin
heath, i love your posts & i respect you a great deal. but i gotta say, this sounds like reationary spin to me. i undersatnd that this is designed to inform but it definitely has a bit of "validating" piracy in its tone. i'm as radical as they get but beware of some wingnut who might echo what i'm saying.
lol upabittoolate, its only a a 'validation' for piracy for us avrg Americans who are clueless about the world...and only catch up when it directly affects us.
This is not new....BBC and other international news including the Canadian media have been covering it for a while.....piracy is direct attribution to the destabilization of Somalia by International governments...mostly Europe and the United States...not 2 mention the role its African regional neighbors plays on Somalia.
don't get me wrong. i undersatnd that totally. but i think you know what kind of nuttiness i'm talking about. more than that though, democracy now is undoubtedly a left leaning news source. hey friend, don't shoot the messenger. believe me when i tell you, i'm 1 of the more sensible cats you might come across. don't expect the same from everyone else
This does not validate the piracy. It does however explain some of the reasons for it. If we don't look at the root causes behind these things I don't see how we solve the problems. Poor desperate people do desperate things in response.
i agree with you. but the tone is definitely one that sounds like it's "qualifying" the piracy. not exactly giving is legitimacy but definitely takes the edge off. my point is that you should be mindful of idiots who'd take this the wrong way. do you know what i mean?
The pirates did not take up their criminal enterprise on a whim, they do so due to the bleak economic prospects in Somalia, which are hampered even more by the sole natural resource (the coast) being plundered by foreign ships.
European & Asian fishing fleets have looted the once rich fishing grounds on the Horn of Africa, Toxic dumping has destroyed the coast.
If you where a Somali fisherman and your livelihood was destroyed, what would you do?
like i said, i don't disagree with any of this but if you 're going to defart the wingnuts, you have to understand their point of view. true or not, this has a bit of spin in its tonality. do you undersatnd what i'm trying to say?
good god, why can't anyone actually read my comments? i don't disagree with any of that. i couldn't. but the facts aren't my impetus here. i said BE MINDFUL OF THE WINGNUTS. THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN LEARNING. why does everyone overlook that? c'mon, you're not stupid. you're CHOOSING to unload on me. you're also preaching to the choir. PLEASE READ then comment

This kind of framing of reporting is exactly what is fueling right wing nuts! This is idiotic, pirates are criminal thugs not a political movement.
