legitimacy to piracy no, everybody understands that! These fleets are breaking international law. You have european companies sailing under belize, honduras, so they can avoid EU-regulation. Japanese, saudi, yemeni and koreans fleets are using the chaos in Somalia to their advantage. The only side we have to take is that of the truth. We Africans don't want to take hostages. The EU paid a Somalian war lord $10 per ton to dump medical and nuclear waste off the coast. He was paid $80 million dollars. In 2004, the tsunami washed all the waste ashore. The cancer rate has skyrocketed because of the waste. Their livlihood vanished. Americans are not told of these things...they are sold a bill of goods no different than the WMD story of Iraq. Being a journalist does give you special privileges- that of an objective observer of events, Journalists covering an event should not be treated the same as protesters (or as authorities from the protesters side) they are there to report not take sides.

This is not new....BBC and other international news including the Canadian media have been covering it for a while.....piracy is direct attribution to the destabilization of Somalia by International governments...mostly Europe and the United States...not 2 mention the role its African regional neighbors plays on Somalia.

This does not validate the piracy. It does however explain some of the reasons for it. If we don't look at the root causes behind these things I don't see how we solve the problems. Poor desperate people do desperate things in response.

The pirates did not take up their criminal enterprise on a whim, they do so due to the bleak economic prospects in Somalia, which are hampered even more by the sole natural resource (the coast) being plundered by foreign ships.

European & Asian fishing fleets have looted the once rich fishing grounds on the Horn of Africa, Toxic dumping has destroyed the coast.

If you where a Somali fisherman and your livelihood was destroyed, what would you do?
