I remember I was practically in shock when this originally aired. I couldn't believe they were insane enough to do this to the audience. Mason and Mary are still the only TV or movie love story that truly moves me. I gave up on SB after I realized they were going to add insult to injury by pairing Mason off with Julia. It wasn't so much that I disliked the character of Julia, but I always found Nancy Grahn incredibly irritating. I literally couldn't watch her stepping into Mary's shoes.
Very emotional. I literally cried where CC says "I love you" to Mason. It make me think about my dad, he's alcoholic, lives in another town and I don't speak with him a lot of time
I cried like a baby over this. I couldn't believe Mary really died (and it wasn't Days of our Lives so she wasn't coming back!). I did end up liking Julia and Mason better, but I always felt bad for Mason losing Mary.
Mary was Masons true love. The entire Julia / Mason thing never did cut it. The show slowly went downhill after that. All though I can truthfully say that is the only soap opera I was ever hooked on. I was hoplessly in love with that show and the day Mary died I can remember crying all weekend feeling Masons pain. Also..on the subject of Mason Lane Davies was the true Mason...Gordom Thompson great actor but Lane Davies was an absoultely amazing actor.
This absolutely broke my heart back in the day. The poster who said it altered the course of the show is absolutely right. Mason never recovered from losing Mary. Even when he fell in love with Julia, she acknowledged that Mary would always be the love of his life.
Maybe it's heartbroken but Mary was destined to be killed. She was too good for Mason. If Mary staid alive there would be no controversy at all. There are also wouldn't be Mason's son and his daughter with Julie. There would be no split personality or anything else. Mason is not a best guy in series and he did many bad things which would be impossible if Mary was still alive. She was like untouchable dream which would never happen.
I disagree. Mason was never the same after Mary's death. His energy was gone. They have to invent silly stories like double personnality to make him interesting again ! Mason didn't "need" to be with Julia : remember all the early 1985 episode when he hadn't any love interest ! They were the funniest ! Mary was Mason true love and the authors admited it in the "heaven" episode. It the most beautiful love story ever on a show.
Mason putting the chokehold on Mark, with his daddy and family friend trying to hold him down: that's some old school fightin' right there, lol!
