also both valves should be open with the piston all the way up. watch donyboy73's video on how to do it. but dont set them at .004 like he says. check your model number first and look up the valve clearences on it online. If its a 287707 readjust them to exaust .006 intake .004 thats the right way.
that is wrong the exaust valve never tightens and .010 and .008 is off by a lot i know this because i work on these engines and from donyboy73 and the briggs website. Valve clearences should be (intake .004) (exhaust .006) thats what they are susposed to be set at
ummm your vid is wrong ive been a lawnmower mech for 22 yrs your gap is totally wrong .010 is way off im not trying to find fault in you just thought you might want to know if you set them too loose and they come out of adjustment you might lose a push rod good luck in the future
wow this is totally the wrong way to do it. you are supposed to adjust each valve and check each valve while the other valve is totally open. you checked both of them when neither was all the way open. you also should adjust them to .004.

pretty much all small engines like this 14.5 hp briggs should be adjusted to .004"

How is itthere are a load of other vids on here claiming both valves are to be set at .004??
trunk516 9 months ago
@trunk516 .004 is good for the intake but exaust should be .006 but some single cylinder briggs espicially the newer ones are different
