whenever i write a title and text info, it is hard for me to find the bug's corresponding name in english (common name). ordinary dictionary is usually no help with regard to entomology.
first of all, i am not a real expert but only a novice spider lover.
my mentor's opinion about this matter of translation (how should we call japanese A. limbata in english?) is like this.
A. limbata shown here is simply A. limbata.
since their distribution is restricted in eastern asia (myanmar, china, korea and jpn), there are no equivalent species in other countries nor corresponding english names.
The music is not fitting. I would gone with, "My Name is Sue! How Do You?! NOW YOU-A GONNA DIE!!!!" Poor FAILbeetle...

this spider is surely a subadult of the Agelena limbata of the family Agelenidae.
its japanese name is "kusa-gumo" which means a "grass spider".
i looked up the Agelenidae in wikipedia to find "Araneomorph funnel-web spider".
and according to wikipedia, grass spiders are members of the different genus Agenonopsis. so that was not right translation.
any suggestions?

you were right, after all!
thanks to you and others, i have been digging deeper into the subject.
according to microsoft encarta and other references, this japanese spider shown here can be called a funnel-weaver or grass spider.
looks like wikipedia may be incorrect concerning the entry of "grass spider".

probably not , funnel web are dark brown not like brown, and it has lots of hair on its leg. So, probably thats not a funnel web :)

hi, thx for ur comment. :D
but funnel-weavers can look different cuz they are NOT IDENTICAL species.
we live in far apart!
but they should belong to the same group in the biological classification.
can u tell me the latin name (scientific name) of ur familiar "funnel-weaver"?
sigma1920 3 years ago
It is of a family Hexathelidae. Atrax robustus
UchihaMaDarassss 3 years ago
ok.
Atrax robstus (they do not live in jpn) seem to be called as "sydney funnel web spiders" in academic articles.
plz wait while i ask my mentors about this matter of translation at a japanese spider forum.

the name "grass spider" or "funnel-weaver" may be somewhat broad categories.
but i have found some academic articles in which the authors (japanese professional arachnologists) called A. limbata "the funnel-web spider".
for example, "Life History of the Funnel-web Spider Agelena limbata: Web Site, Growth, and Reproduction (1992)"
i am gonna mail u the exact url of the full text pdf file if u want.
(cuz any urls are filtered in comments)
