  • No, that d-pad is awful, playing Marvel vs Capcom 2, on this controller used to give me infinite pain. Fighting games on dream were fail.

  • how long do the thumb sticks usally last??

  • I've officially named all of the 3DS' buttons.

    Analog Stick/Joystick = Circle Pad

Directional Pad/Plus Control Pad = Plus Pad

    ABXY/Face Buttons = ABXY Buttons (Ah-BEX-see)

    L and R = Shoulder Buttons

    Start/Select/Home = Home Buttons

    Power Button = Power Button

    3D Adjuster = 3D Slider

...And I think that's it, no?

  • If you have 2 or more controllers, do you need 2 or more VMU cards?

  • @Buss713 VMUs are not necessary to use the Dreamcast controller, just to take advantage of VMU only features, like being able to see your current health status in Resident Evil 2 for example, however, I believe nearly all Dreamcast games can be saved to any memory card that is plugged into any controller points are labelled "A,B,C,D and each controller can have VMU/memory cards in all A1,A2,B1,B2 etc. However there are some that of course default to A1.

    Hopefully I answered your question.

  • @Indead

Thank you for the helpfull response. Yes, you answered my question :)

  • the wii u controller yd that

  • @wwtapsable Say what?

  • I swear the 3DS copied off the button arrangement.

  • @Mematman15 You know, I hadn't actually made the connection, but yes, same face button and "joystick" layout. Aside from the Select/Home/Start buttons.

  • @Indead and @Mematman huh? the 3DS isn't based off of the Dreamcast controller. They just happened to notice the need for a Circle Pad (people call it "joystick" or "analog stick", but Circle Pad sounds cooler). The Plus Pad ("directional pad" smufectional gad) was already there, along with the ABXY (Ah-BEX-see) Pad was also there (they just added X and Y), so I dunno what you mean by Nintendo copied Dreamcast.

  • is this the the wii u?where did you get this?

  • @darkroronoa Lol, no this is the Dreamcast controller, this is one of the controllers that the Wii U got its inspiration from.

  • @Indead i know :)

  • Im not trolling but were not in the past in 2013 the xbox720 is coming out so deal with it again IM NOT TROLLING!!!!

  • @Icantdienow cant forget about the classics though

  • @MrCman404 Thank you.

  • As for the rest of you, omfg, I personally hate the Xbox line of controllers and I'll be honest, get real, Microsoft never copied the Dreamcast or Gamecube controllers. The amount of you guys who fail to interpret the existence of the ORIGINAL Xbox controller is laughable.

  • i just noticed that the nintendo 3ds has the same front button layout i think

  • this and n64 controller are the best i`ve played with now i have for pc a logitech rumblepad 2 and a x-box 360 controller both don`t match the sensitivity and accuracy of n64`s controller and sega dreamcast`s controller too bad pc`s controllers are made of wood or for small and deformed hands ...

  • @patrutiss

Never, put accuracy and the N64 controller in the same sentence.

  • @strykah92 why not n64 ?? n64 controller is the has the best grip and most sensitive analog stick in the whole history of joy pads i have played with :sega master system, nintedo classic, snes, mega drive, amiga cd32,jaguar,playstation 1,2 ,n64,dreamcast,xbox360 controllers....n64 contoller is by far the best one i have held ...

  • @patrutiss

The analog stick was already pretty badly designed compared to the Sega Saturn and PS1 analog sticks, and starts screwing up after around 6 months of use. Not to mention those God-awful C-buttons. The thing is, the N64 controller was just supposed to be a Super NES controller with 6 face buttons, handles, and an analog stick, what the hell was wrong with that design?

  • @strykah92 well to each his own ..for me the n64 still is to this day the best fit controller for gaming i still have the n64 and believe it or not works without squick sounds or miss-functions,the dreamcast controller was and is ok but the analog stick tends to be a bit slippery after some time...

  • i LOVE, LOVE the dreamcast, but I really hate the controller.

  • @millgiass Well, as you can tell by the video, I actually really like it, with the exception of a few little things here and there. What about it don't you like?

  • @Indead Well the hard plastic of the analog and D-pad are really bad for me. And the overall way in which you would grip the controller can become carpal tunnel enducing. By that I specificly mean the trigger buttons. my hands are long and slender so they feel kind of bunched up on these things, and the game I played most of "Phantasy Star Online." required alot of use with those, after a few hours your hands can feel cramped and begin to have a painful sensation in the first two fingerjoints.

  • @millgiass In that case, I will agree with you, the analog stick definitely has some problems, but I honestly can't figure out why people don't like the D-pad, I love it. The controller can be pretty rough on the hands, with the odd shape and all, and you practically are forced to engulf it in your hands to be comfortable with it, and those triggers can bet a bit tedious, although from the sound of it, I'm not sure if my fingers are as long and slender as your say yours are.

  • @millgiass (cont.) although it's hard to compare my fingers to yours in this video, considering this video was stretched into widescreen from 4:3.

Sorry the Dreamcast is so much fun! =D

  • @Indead Yeah, I just learned that I can run burnt games without any mods too. XD Unfortunately most of the games I've seen on the internet are in freaking japanese. A Street fighter game in Japanese is tolerable... An RPG or adventure game... is not.

  • @millgiass Yeah, unfortunately that's one of the things that hurt the Dreamcast early on, but here, 10 years later, we're glad it happened so we can play all the game for the system that we want, without dishing out 40-100 dollars for some of them.

Just keep looking around, you'll find something interesting to play.

  • @Indead I am trying but even when it appears to be English it sometimes turns out to be Japanese. o_O; It's starting to get really frustraiting. Plus another flaw I found out is that most of the fighter rips I've downloaded do not use the analog stick at all, so that rips my thumb open on that horrible d-pad. I wish it was a little less sharp and tiny. not as sharp and tiny as the one on the game cube but my thumb covers the entire d-pad and trying to do hadokens, shoryukens are hurting me.

  • @millgiass Maybe I should just get one of those six button fighting pads or frankenstien a sega saturn controller to have a Dreamcast plug. lol.

  • i LOVE, LOVE the dreamcast, but I really hate the controller.

  • I kind of prefer the wire coming out of the bottom because that way, the wire doesn't wrap around your hands (but that's my fault for holding the controller pointing upwards instead of pointing it at the TV) [i hope my explanation made sense...]

  • You would put one vmu in not 2 and the other slot is for the rumble pack dummy get it wright. and who cares if the controller has the cable at the bottom. I'm thinking you don't like the Dreamcast. The best console to be released! :P

  • It's my top2 controller of all time. I think xbox360 is a little bit better, because it's dreamcast's redesigned copy :)

  • This was my first gaming controller i've ever used.

  • I use my first controller since christmas 1999 :-)

    That´s true Quality!!!

  • @edge1979666 Completely agree my friend ;)

  • Those slots are not why it was down there. There is a 3rd party controller with both of those memory card slots, and the controller wire coming out of the top. They were just busy being retarded.

  • @DisasterPiece0302

    Fair 'nuff.

  • i watched alot of videos about the dreamcast controler why i dont know anyways a lot of people complain about the dc controler wire a couple a days a go i browed a n64 from my friend as you know is n64 controler wire is on the top right well i notice that n64 wire is shorter than dreamcast controler wire so i dont get the compliant if you have both the dc and n64 do the test your self if you care and snice i dont have a cam a cant show so if you have cam please show thanks

  • You know, that's a really good idea, I should make a video demonstrating as many controller lengths for as many consoles as I can. I remember back in the day I was doing comparisons just for myself, I'll have to set aside some time to do that. Thanks man.

  • "It's kinda wack..." ...rofl... after a review that was filled with geekery and nerdery, that was the geekiest, nerdiest, most inadvertantly hilarious comment in the whole thing.

  • Glad you had some fun with it!

  • This controller... was kinds of reminscent of the N64 controller. Just look at the layout, shape, size and the fact that there is a slot in the back for memory or rumble packs.

  • Well, you do bring up some good points, the lack of a second joystick definitely hurt the controller, and after playing so more rumble heavy games, I agree it does feel a bit weird. But I still think the VMU has some great qualities.

  • You are effed up. Why waste so much space for an insult?

  • What sort of stuff would be displayed on the screen? I've seen pictures of text being on there. The reason why I'm asking is I'm designing a skateboard for my friend and his favorite console is the dreamcast. Would it be true to the controller if I painted his name in the screen area? I want it to be special but I don't want to look like a fool if it wasn't even possible for the screen on there to say "Happy B-Day!" or something...Thanks!

  • Actually, yes, a lot of the time, the VMUs would just show the game's title. But in some games, for example, Soul Calibur, the VMU would show a "chibi" version of your character, and whenever you would attack, they would swing their weapons.

If you're familiar with the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, in the game, if you landed or fell, it would display things like Awesome! or Lame! on the screen, it was pretty funny actually ;)

In my opinion, the VMU screen idea sounds awesome.

  • Aw awesome thank you!

  • you never answered the most important question what was the sd screen for

  • microsoft copied the controller design of this

  • Yeah, honestly, why not copy the Dreamcast controller though, it's great, the only problem was... the original Xbox controller was just so terrible!

Although...the Dreamcast really could have benefited from a second analog stick.

  • Shows how cheap M$ is. They really don't want to waste engineering money.

  • Well...they also skimped out on console design as well =P

Well..the console was great, but definitely looked American!

  • @eviltwin777 I love how nobody made these comparisons when the Xbox controller was black...

  • @MrSaturn33 meh I didn't even realize back then since i was like 7 lol. But MS has alot of marketing strategies which are awesome for a corporate minded people but really stingy and cheap for others.Like rushing products and apologizing for defects after the consumer found out. It's obvious apologizing does less damage than them dominating the market and then re-releasing a product to woo back people. Idk thats my opinion but looking at peoples opinion with Win 2000 and epic Xp and so on...

  • @eviltwin777 At least everyone could agree that Sega should have made computers :D

  • @LamHoangVo no they copied the gamecube

  • Good review, I too got my dreamcast in its later years. There is a surprising amount of new games coming out for it from independent companies. You should do reviews for some of the custom controllers too.

  • please tel me what games are coming out...

    and where to buy them

  • Go to playasia to get copies of the new games, you can find homebrew such as Half Life, Counter Strike, Beats of Rage all for free. you just need to download diskjuggler (which is free) 7zip (also free). Just find one of Tux The Wise's post on a message board called snesorama. Counter strike was made by a Russian team and I found the link here on youtube. Hypertension is another game I am looking forward too, just google "hypertension dreamcast" and you'll find sega nerd's article. Have Fun!

  • Hell yeah, I burned that leaked copy of Half-Life/Blue Storm, and I also burned Beats of Rage. I wasn't aware Counter Strike was made for the, but hey, they homebrewers took the time out to make Quake 2, why not CS?

Oh, and also, hell yeah, SnesOrama ;)

  • Yeah, Tux The Wise did great stuff, he also put just about every genisis game on one dreamcast disk, been having a lot of fun with that.

  • Wel, I have I burned a copy of Dreamsnes which was like.. A-M or something, but the emulation isn't that great on several of the games. I may have to look into that Genesis one though you're talkin' about. How's the emulation?

  • The snes emulation is has always been choppy on the dream machine and I really don't know why, I know if you over clock your dreamcast it can run okay. And the genesis emulation is flawless, and It doesn't matter what kind of dream cast either, you can chose what region of game you want to play.

  • You must be a master reviewer to take up 10 and a half minutes for a controller nice going dude

  • Actually, this was one of my first actual sit down and film a review =P

Usually I just spread my hatred or love for something amongst friends. But hell..I guess that could usually take about 10 and a half minutes.. thanks for your opinion!

  • dreamcast is awesome! ignore these people who hate the dreamcast...i think is a unique console and always will man!

  • Great review. Dreamcast is my favorite console of all time and it's awesome to see some enthusiasm for it online. And I've always loved the controller, from its shape to its feel to the ingenious integration of the VMU...it's all good in my book.

    Long live Dreamcast!

  • Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah I just can't believe it wasn't until 2008 that I got my hands on actually owning a console! I have two close friends that have Dreamcasts, but I never really played anything other than Sonic Adventure 2, and occasionally Crazy Taxi 2. I knew there were other hits, but it wasn't until I picked up my own Dreamcast and did my own research that I discovered a multitude of them!

I agree, and don't forget 09/09/09 is comin' up this year ;)

    10 year anniversary!

  • even the standard sega rumble packs come in to contact with the cord.

  • Thanks for that, I still haven't looked into that after all this time XD

  • i use to have a dream cast and my favorite game was sonic adventure 1

  • It's a pretty good one man, I hope you had a blast with your Dreamcast back in the day. I know I'm lovin' it now that I've got one.

  • I forgot to mention how durable it is :>

  • LULZ@! I used to have one of them. I had aaaaa Chokobo? Err something, from sonic on that memory card. I thought it was the coolest thing evar.

  • Lol, close but still a little off ;)

Chocobo's were from Final Fantasy, those big bird lookin' things =P

Sonic had the Chaos ;), and yeah you could put them on the VMU and take them with you. I did it once several years ago on a friend's.

  • dude can you please do a video on how to burn dreamcast games plz dude i might get one and bieng able to burn shenmue onto a disc instead of tracking it down on ebay would be most appreciated

  • I might, I'd have to figure out how to work hypercam or something of the like. There are many tutorials online, just do what you can to decipher those, it will take a few tries. I know my games did.

You need the right programs, and you need the right file types.

  • The proper response is "Google is your friend" haha

  • I know I know ;)

  • i was wondering... does the VMU or something show something on the controller screen???

  • Yeah, in most games it just displays the title of the game you're playing or nothing at all. Although some will show you important information, such as in Resident Evil I believe it would show your health on the VMU, and in the NFL 2K series, you could turn on an option to have your play choices show up on the VMU instead of on screen for intense multiplayer matches ;)

  • I remember when I first played with the Dreamcast controller in stores. It was awesome. I always use my index finder with my thumb on the thumbpad to give extra control. I did the same on the N64 joystick too, just something I do. And I agree with the Genesis D-Pad. I'm not it's biggest fan either. It makes my thumb tired and feel almost numb if I mash on it hard during those intense gaming moments. But I guess it's not too bad. Anyway, great video.

  • Thanks Brett, I know I needed to get some videos posted up because I haven't had a decent one in a long while, so I made 3 of them today XD

  • Three? Sounds good. Can you give us a preview of what they're about?

  • Lol, I'd like to, but I ran out of batteries for my camera ;)

Hopefully I'll be able to get some new AAs pretty soon so I can make some more videos.

I am encoding another right now, so it'll be up right after it's finished encoding.

  • Cool. I'll look out for it :)
