Well, the Huey was a transport helicopter, and there you need a lot of space for the cargo. Hence the pilots were placed side by side. In a gunship though, you want it to show as little target area as possible to make it harder to discover and hit.
The Cobra was basically a UH-1 Huey that got the hull stripped off and replaced with a sleeker hull saving the trouble of making new drive-lines etc. The Apache is a totally new design intended for gunship from start.

America's military has been battle tested pretty much for the last 70 years or so. I believe in theory that the U.S goes to war intentionally to test out their equipment, and if there are any setbacks or flaws that are exposed, then they go back to make changes. This is how the Cobra first came into existence as an advanced attack version of the Huey, and also the F-15 came into existence as a result of the flaws that was discovered on the F-4 Phantom in Vietnam. America strives to be the best..

Well, the Huey was a transport helicopter, and there you need a lot of space for the cargo. Hence the pilots were placed side by side. In a gunship though, you want it to show as little target area as possible to make it harder to discover and hit.
The Cobra was basically a UH-1 Huey that got the hull stripped off and replaced with a sleeker hull saving the trouble of making new drive-lines etc. The Apache is a totally new design intended for gunship from start.

America's military has been battle tested pretty much for the last 70 years or so. I believe in theory that the U.S goes to war intentionally to test out their equipment, and if there are any setbacks or flaws that are exposed, then they go back to make changes. This is how the Cobra first came into existence as an advanced attack version of the Huey, and also the F-15 came into existence as a result of the flaws that was discovered on the F-4 Phantom in Vietnam.
