  • Remember people if you are trying to lose weight, just because the item is on sale does not mean its healthy

  • Man, I was just talking about Nationals with my friend a few days ago!

  • Aw, that background music! Yay!

  • Safari Coffee only $3.00? LIARS!!!!

  • one bagger and 5+ checkouts does anyone think thats unfair worker treatment ?

  • The cities that I can think of here in Illinois that had a National supermarket before Schuncks bought the chain were Centralia and Fairview Heights.

  • fuck walmart i refuse to spend my money in that place

  • holy shit. my mom used to work at National. I remember when Schnucks bought them out and we went to the store my mom used to work at and most of the store was empty from all the food being bought. It was sad, but my mom's been with Schuncks since.

  • So THAT"S what happened with National...didn't they have some wack song called..."You're Important To Us?" LMAO!!!

All insults to the side, I remember as akid it was the only "affordable" place to rent Nintendo cartridges. Sigh......

  • Make sure YouTube will bring Canal Villere archive commercials,OK?

  • Seems now that the "National" symbol is being used in Canada by Dominion Supermarkets, per a commercial break last night during "Entertainment Tonight" on WGRZ here in Buffalo.

  • The National logo was the upside down version of Loblaw's logo (the parent company of National). Dominion is owned by Loblaw's.

  • I recall national in Minnesota(Virginia/Eveleth), and in New Iberia, LA. After miving up this way to Buffalo, I heard of Loblaws(the National logo upside down) in Canada... then my girfriend(my wife now) told me of Loblaws in Erie, PA. One of those is now a Quality Markets on West 38th @ Peach.

  • I remeber going into that Loblaws when I was aboutb 6 years old. The national cream soda was very good!!! There was a mazda dealer near by. Shades mazda. i reember going there when going to presgile state park the beach!!

  • I think they still have the Mazda place, although it may be a different name. They also had a Big Boy's that then became a used car lot.

And there's a car lot where there was the Ford's Fried Chicken restaurant.

But there's still the Quality Market Plaza.

  • I'll admit that National wasn't the best grocery store, they had awesome drinks. Black cherry was the shit! Too bad the chain didn't last long in New Orleans.

  • Yeah this did bring back a lot of memories. This brings back my childhood. With the old school music in the background. I just hope no one makes this into a rap sample lol

  • The video and jingle brings back memories. Was that Bill Bradley doing the spots I wonder.

I agree with Ajwrangler1977, National stores where the pits. Schnucks and Dierbergs put a suprior product in to St Louis area supermarktes. Kroger, National and the other just could not compete in the market.

  • The voice for National was Thom Lewis.

  • its a shame what schnucks crime against st.louis. the took out Rapps, then chased out Krogers and then Bought out National, THEN they make it out like those grocers were leaving anyway so they look good. They still continue to Monopolize st.louis they tried to take out Shop N Save in the last strike i cant wait for Walmart supercenters to clean there clocks and give them a taste of there own medicine

  • Have you ever shopped at a WalMart Supercenter... bad produce, bad meat, and a lines to checkout that are easily 20 minutes sometimes. People who shop at Schnucks (or Dierbergs) are less price sensitive than a WalMart Supercenter shopper and Schnucks has great service & great meats and produce. Ironically, you criticize Schnucks for what they did to a small pocket of stores (National) but look at the even worse effect WalMart has had on the ENTIRE country with their questionable practices.

  • WalMart will never beat out Schnucks. Schnucks and Dierbergs will do fine, they cater to a higher tier of customer. The chain that will suffer most will be Shop N' Save because they will be competing for the same customers who are more budget-sensitive. Once they realize they no longer have to bag their groceries, they will stop going to Shop N' Save. But as for Schnucks... it ain't going away any time soon. Besides, the things Walmart has done are WAY worse than Schnucks on a global scale.

  • Schnucks won't take out Shop N' Save as they are owned by SuperValu which has FAR DEEPER pockets than Schnucks has. I wouldn't set foot in a Schnucks today if I had to drive 30 miles to the next store.

  • SuperValu will close stores that don't make money. They closed the Shop N' Save in Festus after Walmart Supercenter opened b/c the competition killed it. No corporation throws good money after bad. In fact, SuperValu now owns Albertson's in the South and they have closed MANY of those stores due to the pressures from Walmart. Luckily SuperValu als0 owns Save A Lot which is a very competitive growth vehicle for them.

  • I hate to tell you this but, there is STILL a Shop N save open thats either in Festus,or Crystal CITY....

  • While Schnucks did further ruin this mediocre chain of already awful stores, at least they kept them on life support for awhile longer while the FTC sorted out the whole deal. Loblaw's would have just closed them. What REAL reason or incentive did a Canadian supermarket operator have to put the time and eneregy into a small pocket of dingy stores in Missouri/Louisiana? National's stores always looked so dated compared to the other chains in St. Louis. Even Shop N' Save had better looking stores.

  • AJ, why all the hate? Did you get fired from National or something? This was posted for nostalgia, get a grip!

  • No, I got really sick as a kid because an idiot pharmacist in their "Kare Pharmacy" filled my prescription incorrectly with the wrong dosage of the medication the doctor prescribed. Instead of getting better I got even sicker trying. I could never have worked at a National store they smelled like mold when you walked in the door.
