I think it's pretty clear that this is a documentary about the American experience in WWII, of the common soldiers and the people who loved them, of the American social issues at play, about AMERICANS. If you missed that, you didn't watch it and you should keep still. I'd be interested in hearing the viewpoints of other soldiers, but that isn't what this was about. The terms "good" and "bad" were used in reference to the perspectives of those featured.
The female who spoke the line the war is about good guys beating the bad guys. She just offended the entire Japanese, Italian, Hungarian, Romanian, German, etc. WWII veterans. Not all these guys are bad, they are soldiers, some were forced to join to fight, otherwise face the firing squad or concentration camp.
The problem with war is, of course, it is never actually fought by the people who start them. Those guys, the leaders, never seem to care about the lives they throw away so long as it advances their own personal agenda, and I include all wars in the past 100 years here, including the Iraq War.
Who is the good guy and who is the bad? The germans fought for what they believed in, and americans and all the other allies fought for what they believed in. And further, I doubt the german soldiers wanted the war as much as the allies did. Most of them where normal peoples who just wanted the war to end. Im just so sick that everyone is telling how bad the german soldiers where. They where really brave, and fought so hard, exactly the same as all other soldiers in WW2
I understand you. But truth of the matter is the allied countries were just minding their own business and living their lives when Germany, Japan and Italy started the war. You don't want them to be called bad guys but they invaded, they attacked and whether they were good fathers or obedient loving sons, they were the BAD GUYS in the story called World War II. My father lost his dad and six uncles in the war. You are alive now because of the peace that men like them had fought and died for.
But again, how many of the german soldiers did really want a war? How many of 'em shared opinion with Hitler?? I think the german soldiers, were to afraid to speak up. Hitler did assassin plenty people on his way into Reichtag, how could they know that they wasn't going to be executed if they didn't do as told. Of course you think they're the bad guys starting the war, but the at the same time, most of 'em wanted it as much as the rest of us. I also understand you thinking they're "the bad guys"
"how many of the german soldiers did really want a war? How many of 'em shared opinion with Hitler?? I think the german soldiers, were to afraid to speak up." Point proven, that the German side was the bad guy. Our soldiers weren't scared to speak up if our side was doing something wrong There's good and bad in every group so you need to take into account who is worse overall and who is best. So if both sides were the same, would life be as good as it is now if the Germans and Japanese had won.?
US troops did plenty of terrible things, Curtis LeMay himself said " I suppose if I had lost the war, i would have been tried as a war criminal", the victors write the history.
it´s a bit simple, ww II was nothing else then the logic move on the peace of ww I .... logic is not always what it seems to be! of course, this does not justify anything of what has been done in concentration camps under the "great rule" of A.H., i.e. by his destined murder squad!
both sides fought for what they believed in, no doubt about that. so you have to ask yourself, which point of view would bring most benefit to the world as a whole?
