My question is: How do I blend a new paint job (using spray paint) into a 12 year old Vegas, sun beaten, older color? I've been using different colors and I'm trying to get the best result. I haven't gotten as close as I want to be. Any suggestions?
Go Honda that all i can say sorry dont like your job in wordes comeing out you'r face you paid say everything you said take that 2cents words go get real job
i use duplicolor. way better if you know what your doing. and it don't take days to do. i repainted car that were damage and no problem color matching and i even painted racing stripes no sweat.
I would like to paint my bodykit and plastic panels to the same color as my rims, that semi metallic silver look, do I follow the same instructions you have here? This car will be down a white so drying time will be plenty!
I hate when music starts to play when someone is speaking through a tutorial video, i start to flick through all my other tabs to see if another video is playing :/
You need to try one of those plastic spray can grips with the trigger on it. They make it much easier to spray paint with. Great video. I like that scooter!
@CrankDatPikachu01 when paint & clear dry it shrinks & pulls distorting the surface as the solvents evaporate. Look closely at a few cars... Notice the clear coat is not 100% flat & smooth when looking up close? It has waves, like the texture of an orange peel.
@Shanemoon87 wet sanding with 1,500 grit sand paper gets rid of the orange peel but be careful not to over sand... You can burn through the clear quick! You can use 1,000 grit if you are aware of your limits. I wouldn't go much lower than that personally, your paint isn't worth the risk.
Quick question, so you sanded it before painting with a coarse grit like 600 I'm guessing? then you painted it and put clear, then you sanded it with a 1000 grit before buffing right? Do you necessarily need to sand it after the clear coat? Do you still get orange peels and runs even after you sand it well before painting? I know good prepping is key to a good finish, but do you STILL get orange peels and imperfections even after prepping it well?
I've used Kyrlon Fusion to paint various car parts and by far I've found it to be the best. Drys fast and lasts for a long time. I usually put on 3 coats color, and 2 coats clear. Found this to give the best results. There's also several online paint companies that will mix factory colors for you if you give them the cars paint code number.
I was thinking of plastidipping my black Ruckus, but you have inspired me to paint. MAybe I'll paint over clear Plastidip, I'm still kinda scared. Looks good.
If your painting your whole car you would be stupid not to buy a sprayer considering u can get a gallon of pain for like 35 bucks at a local paint shop, u can get a used compressor and gun for like 150
never done anything like this before but why wouldnt you sand the orange peel before the clear coat? or would it just be a waste of time. I dont know if a sanded clear coat would hide it all.

Proper paint job, spray primer, sand primer, spray base coat (color) sand color, spray clear, sand clear. That's how you get a glossy smooth finish. I went to school for this.
I know you like RustO and it is pretty good. It's the last choice I would make due to the drying time.
Most of us either need to use the painted item or assemble it with something else quickly after painting. This is not possible with RustO. I don't use Krylon, but I do use Duplicolor and have had very good results. But in being fair, I have not painted fenders with any of the above. I have and use a spray gun with the appropriate paints and clears. Just my 2 cents.
Good job man! ive painted alot of stuff on my car with duplicolor paint and its been over 2 years on some stuff and it still looks the same and it drys wayyyyyy faster than ur shit
You can use all the rustoleum you want, but if the car is outside in the sun long enough, that paint job will turn to crap. You need clear and hardener on that.
Because you have no luck with duplicolor or krypton. .... They suck ? ... Don't think so,it's you who doesn't read the can or know what he's doing. ... In your back yard no less. WTF
at 5:55 I see the lawn mower you should do the deck on that. Paint it, Clear It and Polish It with Ultimate Compound by Meguair. Meguair you can use that for all kind of paint no matter household hobby paint like rust-o-leum or actually car paint. Not that many polish will work with rust-o-leum.
I really enjoyed this video. The editing made it really great. One thing I've noticed with Rustoleum, is that you have a one hour window between coats; you can paint a second coat as long as its within one hour of the first one. If you let that one hour pass, you have to wait 48 hours to avoid the orange peel.
Just one question,Why would you spray clear coat over orange peel then sand?Once you sanded down orange peel all the clear would be sanded off wouldnt it?Seems to me you should of sanded first then clear coated then sand and polished.
@310richard agreed. i was going to say the same thing. rustoleum is only better than krylon because krylon is waterbased..but montana and belton's quality is by far more opaque and solid. my car is painted with montana nitro 2g :D
Decent job, and for a small project like this, spray bombs are fine. However, I would avoid using Rustoleum because it dries too slow. Use either Krylon or an acrylic enamel or a lacquer spray from an auto parts store.
Also the clear can be sprayed over the base without sanding. A compatible clear will adhere to a clean fresh base coat just fine. Do not use clear lacquer over an enamel base coat, but clear acrylic enamel over lacquer base coat is fine.
i agree with the guy that you should use a spray gun and compressor but rustoleum paint is alright but bscince you put clear coat that shit is gonna last for a while but if you think the cans leave a good finish you should try a hvlp gun and a air compressor n thats going to look way better
I would wet sand the color down before clearing. That way you're eliminating the orange peel, not just covering it up.The orange peel is caused by humidity and can be helped to reduce by NOT PAINTING OUTSIDE IN THE SUN, but I would take that 6 bucks per can money and buy a comprssor and spraygun and learn to do it right, which I did.
Only issue I have with this is the fact that you did not sand the gloss down before spraying the clear. WTF u doin man makin shit up as you go. Your clear coat did not adhere to your base coat correctly because you did not take off the gloss from the single stage rustoleum....A GOOD way.....sure...the RIGHT way? Not a chance
@Mikeandwendy74 what are you talkin about if you sand before the clear the clear will magnify your sand scratchs if you have to sand your base at all you have to re apply base before you can clear it
@Mikeandwendy74 Did he edit the video, or do I misunderstand your comment? Once the original paint was dry / orange-peel effect visible, vhe appears to be sanding down the gloss as you suggest (3:58 mark in video). Although he doesn't narrate or emphasize this particular (important) step, I assumed he performed it. Just curious as this topic is of interest to me.
@dopemelody I'm gonig to have to do a strictly wetsanding video to show folks how to work with rustoleum.....I painted my truck gloss black, and the paint is an absolute MIRROR reflection....I'm talking about counting the hairs on your knuckle in the paint. There's a trick to it, and there's only one way to get it to shine like that.
@Mikeandwendy74 Explain what you mean by sanding the gloss down.Do you mean sanding the base coats down?So you should apply the base coats, sanding in between coats, then shoot the clear, sand that then shoot clear again?Them what?
@markymark7560 if your spray paint.....and its not flat colored....it contains a clear gloss. The gloss "floats" to the outer coat during the curing time....giving you the shine. If you're going to clear coat over that AFTER it cures....you wetsand it first. Whoever said the clear gloss will show wetsanding scratches doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about...and does not know how to wetsand paint properly.
@markymark7560 if you're going to shoot single stage like he did in the video, the clear needs to go on BEFORE the paint cure....while its still wet.....or you wait until its cured and wetsand the gloss with some 1500 grit away, then re-clear.....re-wetsand and polish to perfection.
OK, can you use this method or the roller method on a car you plan on driving? I have a fiero I am working on and I plan on painting it with the roller method. I have a carport the car will be parked in with visqueen dropped on 3 corners. I plan on painting the parts on the car. Woudl this be a viable way to paint the car? Also, after I have rolled the paint on, would it have to sit 2 months or would I be able to drive it say a week after I have buffed the clear out?
Thank you for the video, and yes I've had bad luck with duplicolor. And a word to the wise, don't use 95%+ isopropyl (or any for that matter) alcohol to clean up on dupli-color spray paint. I did that one day after weeks of letting the part sit and it wiped the paint OFF. I had no idea rubbing alcohol would do that.
I'm confused. If the basecoat is orange peeled and you cover it with clear coat. Then why does wet sanding the clear coat remove the basecoats orange peel?
Been looking to paint my plastics and tank for my motorcycle on a budget. It's a bit too cold to paint right now without having to wait days for even the primer to dry. I need to bondo the tank, but i've been looking for info on how to paint and what kind of spray paint is good and bad. Pretty informative. Thanks.
I want to thank you a lot - I'm in the middle of my first Rustoleum spray-can job in part due to the encouragement from your video. I'm planning on lightly wet-sanding the base color before applying the Rustoleum clear-coat... it just seems like it would help.
When you see the orange peel from the original red paint coatings, why do you sand AFTER you clear coat? Why not sand the paint, clear coat over and sand again? Awesome job-very dramatic music selection
A nice tick for getting the paint to go on smoothly, is to put the spray paint can in boiling water for a couple minutes. Doing so will make the paint much thinner and it will be less likely to clump or leave orange peel.
jtech: these are great videos: I am about to try out a motorcycle fender using your spray techniques and a few others I've found on youtube (after I practice a bit on a mail box and some other scrap). Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and posting them
Hey mate, nice vid. Quick question, when leaving it to dry, should you put the panel indoors to protect it from the elements such as dirt, dust, water, bird shit?
i agree with some of the comments on here, no 2 months,. and no you cannot paint a car like that,. its goin to come out like crap,.do it the right way, compressor, and spray gun, and a booth is the right way,.for small parts, its good,. and believe me that paint will not last, long,
@tonto20091 some people can't afford a spray gun and a booth. when you have a car a ton of miles on it, and you don't want to spend ehh 3000 dollars plus on having it repainted (Forced to drive it for a while), then these protocals are necessary. Swear I'm not being a smart alik or anything like that. I'm just saying that MOST of us KNOW the real ways to paint a car. My car actually came out pretty well doing this. Cost me around 400 bucks vs 1200 the right way vs 3500 for the professionals.
@tonto20091 I've painted 2 cars and a truck and even a ride on mower with spray paint, ive gotten fantastic results from rattle cans and its hard to beat $45-$75 for a complete paint job. BTW the paint and finish has lasted for the last 9 years so far
@tonto20091 Wtf ever. Ive paint several Vehicles with rattle cans. Its all about prep.. And they wash, wax, and buff just as any other paint job..And Yes Rustoleum is the only spray paint that works..
Dude I'm sorry but you've got your drying times WAY wrong. I work in a professional paint shop and automotive finishes cure in 24 48 hours depending if they need to be heat dried or just air dried. TWO MONTHS, your full of it. Don't get me wrong the advice your giving is going to be helpful to DYI's but who told you two months read the label 4-6 hours dry time. If the paint wasn't dry for two months you wouldn't have sanded it down and buffed it, the reason its gonna chip or scratch easy is bec
@Mr89z28 automotive paint is completely different from these spray cans. I've used spray cans a lot and you only stop smelling reducer after 2 months. The can says it drys in 24 hours but at that point I've found it is very fragile. You can sand it but it still very soft, I can press my finger on it and imprint my fingerprint into the paint. That is not dry paint, no matter what the can says.
@Rawr454 No, at that point the color coat is still wet, you could sand it but Ive found it is not needed for the clear to stick to the wet color. Ive never had a problem with the clear peeling or flaking doing it this way.
When you painted the car panel you wet sanded each coat of paint, but in this video you waited until you added the clear coat to sand and polish. Why? Was it because you used multiple coats of paint on the car panel and only one paint session on this piece? Would it look better if you sand the paint coat as well as the clear coat?
@motorhead1 I sanded in the other vid because I was rolling it on with thinned paint that drys very quickly. Spray paint drys very slowly and goes on smoother so it doesn't need the sanding. You could sand it like in the other vid but it is totally not needed with spray cans.
When you were sanding, what did you mean by fix your spots? Can you sand the entire piece in one direction, than use the rubbing compound in a direction 90 degrees to the sanding direction, or do you do this in spots until you cover the entire piece?
@motorhead1 I usually do it in 1ft areas one at a time. That way you know if you did an area right. By fixing your spots I mean make sure you sand out all the high and low spots. When you start sanding you will see them clear as day.
So would this recap be accurate? Sand DRY with 320 Wipe down Mineral spirts (paint thinner) with shop cloth/rag Wipe down Tack cloth 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Enamel (swirl & shake) Apply Each coat allowing 5 min between coats Let sit for 2 days (48 hours) Wipe down with mineral spirts then tack cloth 3 coats of clear (Rust Oleum) apply just like color coats Wait 2 days time Wet Sand 1000 Maguire’s ultimate compound
@cali108 Yeah and don't expect the paint to be tough until it fully dries in about 2 months. You can wash it and everything but it will not be strong untill it's really dry.
nice tutorial. i had a question though. i noticed you didn't wet sand the paint. I heard that you're supposed to wet sand the paint BEFORE you apply the clear coat. then wet sand the clear coat as well to get the smoothest finish. i just wanted your input on that. thanks.
i dont understand why did you put on coat of clear and base, arent you supposed to put about 3 of each? And how to you feel about catalyzed clear in a can with the hardner. Im not sure if its worth the extra cash or how easy it is to work with it.
My question is: How do I blend a new paint job (using spray paint) into a 12 year old Vegas, sun beaten, older color? I've been using different colors and I'm trying to get the best result. I haven't gotten as close as I want to be. Any suggestions?

smokestack56 1 month ago
thats some hellacious orange peel, should try a lot more light coats, never do heavy coats for that reason alone

Best spray paint in the market is montana paint and belton paint...but great job on the painting
310richard 1 month ago
@310richard agreed. i was going to say the same thing. rustoleum is only better than krylon because krylon is waterbased..but montana and belton's quality is by far more opaque and solid. my car is painted with montana nitro 2g :D

hi great job,can you tell me why my spray job just runs and what can I do to sort it thanks
tigertruckerman 1 month ago
If you put the spray can in hot water before you use it, it will soften the paint and give you an even nicer and more even surface.
Also, alot of light coats give a much nicer result than few, thick coats.

I avoid rustoleum due to issues with it and galvanized metals. it also doesn't work well with lacquer.
mikebola 1 month ago
Decent job, and for a small project like this, spray bombs are fine. However, I would avoid using Rustoleum because it dries too slow. Use either Krylon or an acrylic enamel or a lacquer spray from an auto parts store.
Also the clear can be sprayed over the base without sanding. A compatible clear will adhere to a clean fresh base coat just fine. Do not use clear lacquer over an enamel base coat, but clear acrylic enamel over lacquer base coat is fine.

Can you polish a color which camed out of a spray can?
tuning944 2 months ago
i agree with the guy that you should use a spray gun and compressor but rustoleum paint is alright but bscince you put clear coat that shit is gonna last for a while but if you think the cans leave a good finish you should try a hvlp gun and a air compressor n thats going to look way better

I would wet sand the color down before clearing. That way you're eliminating the orange peel, not just covering it up.The orange peel is caused by humidity and can be helped to reduce by NOT PAINTING OUTSIDE IN THE SUN, but I would take that 6 bucks per can money and buy a comprssor and spraygun and learn to do it right, which I did.

upandabove567 2 months ago
Only issue I have with this is the fact that you did not sand the gloss down before spraying the clear. WTF u doin man makin shit up as you go. Your clear coat did not adhere to your base coat correctly because you did not take off the gloss from the single stage rustoleum....A GOOD way.....sure...the RIGHT way? Not a chance
Mikeandwendy74 2 months ago 10
@Mikeandwendy74 what are you talkin about if you sand before the clear the clear will magnify your sand scratchs if you have to sand your base at all you have to re apply base before you can clear it
bobhadababitsaboy 4 weeks ago
@Mikeandwendy74 Did he edit the video, or do I misunderstand your comment? Once the original paint was dry / orange-peel effect visible, vhe appears to be sanding down the gloss as you suggest (3:58 mark in video). Although he doesn't narrate or emphasize this particular (important) step, I assumed he performed it. Just curious as this topic is of interest to me.
dopemelody 3 weeks ago
@dopemelody I'm gonig to have to do a strictly wetsanding video to show folks how to work with rustoleum.....I painted my truck gloss black, and the paint is an absolute MIRROR reflection....I'm talking about counting the hairs on your knuckle in the paint. There's a trick to it, and there's only one way to get it to shine like that.
Mikeandwendy74 3 weeks ago
@Mikeandwendy74 Explain what you mean by sanding the gloss down.Do you mean sanding the base coats down?So you should apply the base coats, sanding in between coats, then shoot the clear, sand that then shoot clear again?Them what?
markymark7560 3 weeks ago
@markymark7560 if your spray paint.....and its not flat colored....it contains a clear gloss. The gloss "floats" to the outer coat during the curing time....giving you the shine. If you're going to clear coat over that AFTER it cures....you wetsand it first. Whoever said the clear gloss will show wetsanding scratches doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about...and does not know how to wetsand paint properly.
Mikeandwendy74 3 weeks ago

A nice tick for getting the paint to go on smoothly, is to put the spray paint can in boiling water for a couple minutes. Doing so will make the paint much thinner and it will be less likely to clump or leave orange peel.

i agree with some of the comments on here, no 2 months,. and no you cannot paint a car like that,. its goin to come out like crap,.do it the right way, compressor, and spray gun, and a booth is the right way,.for small parts, its good,. and believe me that paint will not last, long,
tonto20091 3 months ago
@tonto20091 This paint has lasted years on my other bike. Looks exactly the way it did when I put it on.
jtech87 3 months ago 19

Mr89z28 3 months ago
@Mr89z28 automotive paint is completely different from these spray cans. I've used spray cans a lot and you only stop smelling reducer after 2 months. The can says it drys in 24 hours but at that point I've found it is very fragile. You can sand it but it still very soft, I can press my finger on it and imprint my fingerprint into the paint. That is not dry paint, no matter what the can says.

also what does the paint thinner do?

Did you ScotchBrite or rough up the red before spraying on clear? As I understood the clear needs something to stick to other than dry paint?
Rawr454 4 months ago
@Rawr454 No, at that point the color coat is still wet, you could sand it but Ive found it is not needed for the clear to stick to the wet color. Ive never had a problem with the clear peeling or flaking doing it this way.

When you painted the car panel you wet sanded each coat of paint, but in this video you waited until you added the clear coat to sand and polish. Why? Was it because you used multiple coats of paint on the car panel and only one paint session on this piece? Would it look better if you sand the paint coat as well as the clear coat?
motorhead1 4 months ago
@motorhead1 I sanded in the other vid because I was rolling it on with thinned paint that drys very quickly. Spray paint drys very slowly and goes on smoother so it doesn't need the sanding. You could sand it like in the other vid but it is totally not needed with spray cans.
jtech87 3 months ago
When you were sanding, what did you mean by fix your spots? Can you sand the entire piece in one direction, than use the rubbing compound in a direction 90 degrees to the sanding direction, or do you do this in spots until you cover the entire piece?
motorhead1 4 months ago
@motorhead1 I usually do it in 1ft areas one at a time. That way you know if you did an area right. By fixing your spots I mean make sure you sand out all the high and low spots. When you start sanding you will see them clear as day.
