@Windows7n00b Sega Genesis used pre-rendered sprites, it's like taking a photograph and making sprites from it. The 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System has an FX chip that rendered games in 3D polygons like Star Fox.
@Windows7n00b Since the 32-64 bit era, it became more rare to use pre-rendered sprites, they still used them in games like Donkey Kong Country (and the portable ports), Duke Nukem 3D as well as other old and portable FPS games, but nowadays it's either artistically done sprites (sometimes filter effects are applied) or 3D polygons. New Super Mario Bros (Wii), Sonic 4 and Donkey Kong Country Returns use 3D polygons on 2D planes instead of 2D snapshots of 3D polygons.
@Windows7n00b A sprite is a 2D image (like a drawing), a polygon is a 3D image (like a sculpture). Games nowadays have the technology to use 3D polygons in place of pre-rendered sprites. If Donkey Kong Country was made today, DK would be a live 3D polygon instead of a set of snapshots of one.
About them looking realistic, polygons have many edges now and can look smoother and have higher-res textures. Some sprites may be pre-rendered, but most are just well-drawn now or else a polygon is used.
@bardhi09 No, it uses a model. How do I know? Somebody hacked the Wii version to recolor Sonic, (I know, recolors suck), but they had to recolor a 3D polygon, not paint-bucket a sprite sheet.
@bardhi09 Thus proving my point that Sonic is a 3D polygon, this is what I meant by that. The levels look like pre-rendered textures, this must be what Iizuka was talking about.
@bardhi09 The level geometry is pre-rendered, and the back-drops of the iPhone version are prerendered, the backgrounds in the console versions are CGI, badniks are 3D, Robotnik's 3D, Sonic's 3D, Rings are 3D in the console version and pre-rendered in the iPhone version, some level objects are 3D. iPhone usually has more 2D than the console version, console version applies cell-shading to several polygons (and the 360 version fucked some shit up on Sonic's model, looks fine on PS3 and Wii.)
they should remake this game!

I find it sad how It only takes sega 16 BITS to accomplish beautiful 3-D, yet the Mario faggots take 64 BITS, and their 3-6 SUCKS!!!!!!
Am I missing something here?
