JFK wasn't talking about secret societies, but unlike some people say, he wasn't talking about communism either. He was talking about secrecy in government in general, and how the press should understand that even though, in hard times, some things have to kept secret for security, they should not take that as a signal to censor the news and stifle knowledge of what was going on.

He mentioned secret societies ONCE, in passing, in a string of examples. Of course he is talking partly about communism too, about the threat that it imposes on the US, and how, even with the ever-present communist threat, the press should not shy away from reporting reality, because if they do, secret operations of the government, (which work like "secret societies") will go unchecked--they will "silence, not praise" those who disagree with them if the 1st amenment is not excercised.

However, althoug not every single was in the past 100 years was *planned* for profit, they were definitely all exploited and stepped up for profit, especially the Cold War.
