@futurebestseller84 I do not think it was entirely the fault of von Paulus who was doing what Hitler wanted. At the end of the day, the stupidity is throwing away the obvious advantage of speed, manoeurability, good radio contact etc to fight a war which suited the other side. The only logical way of capturing Stalingrad was through surrounding it - somewhat difficult with the river behind but not impossible.

It's true, the United States and UK and Allies were at war on THREE fronts, the USA supllied USSR with 2 million pairs of felt boots, Sherman tanks etc. The Russians, yes did win major battles - and were notorious for sending their own soldiers forth to protect their tanks and not the other way around, T34's probably ran over more Soviets than Germans.

The Soviet Army was in their homeland. They were well dug in and knew the area well + they had numerical superiority. The Germans on the other hand had to storm them making themselfs vulnerable. Thats very brave storming well dug in locals. The Germans still had a 2 to 1 ratio in kills. Making them the better soldier in close combat aswell as mobile warfare. They were the best soldiers that ever lived and that is a simple fact. The soviets knew it. In the end they were outnumbeed and lost.

Was Stalingrad being targeted purely for its symbolic value? Once the bombings had destroyed its infrastructure and general military usefulness, why not leave it alone, or trick the Russians into keeping troops there through feints and misdirection because they value it more than you do?

@oldbluescott There was a spur line on the East bank of the Volga. As long as Stalingrad held out, that spur line would pour reserves into that bridgehead over the Volga. Pushing the Soviets off the West bank of the Volga, was a necessity as the Wehrmacht possessed insufficient force without the cover of that river-line across such an extended front.
