If it wasn't for this man, Peter Benchley that is, I would have never fully discovered my love for sharks and the oceans they live in. To him I owe so much, and I just wish I could have met this brilliant man just once...
Peter Benchley is my favorite author, and Jaws is my favorite book. I've read every novel he's writtten, and lament that I'll never see him in real life.
I met him, and his family, in my honeymoon in 1997... we were in french polinisea. We could not believe when we saw Mr. Benchley just beside us in such a small plane landing on Rangiroa.... He was reading the local newspaper, where we (me and my husband) ,could recognize a familiar picture on the front page... Then my husband, who is much more an intruder than me :-) said : "is that you on the news paper?" and with a smile and a kind look he nodded.... I'll never forget that... :-))
His book, The Beast was just brilliant too. Nothing but story. Unfortunately "improved" by Hollywood when it was filmed. Would be a great movie if anyone decent had the guts to make it. properly RIP Mr. Benchley. As a kid Jaws terrified me and I was devastated when Treece was killed at the end of The Deep. Thats skill and my love of books has continued since. Thank you Sir. I miss you and would have loved to have been part of your "Squid Squad"
I got into reading as aan 11 year old because of Mr. Benchley. He really got me interested in the lakes and oceans. I must have read Jaws a dozen or so times. Then I read the Island and The Deep.
Despite his failing health it makes me happy that he was able to attend Jawsfest and see what his writing and story and movie meant to so many people over the years. Must have moved him a fair bit.
i think it was an awesome book, jaws was....but peter benchley might of been racist in his book he wrote that might be racist.....why not?if i go swimming i bet one would.dont sharks eat black ppl.....kinda racist to me........all mean comments calling me names will be ignored
Peter Benchley's 1974 best-selling novel, JAWS, will always be read and enjoyed by the millions of JAWS fans around the globe. I remember the time when l purchased the novel as a teenager and being hooked right away.
Benchley may have written numerous novels after JAWS, but, it was that story about a blood-thirsty Great White that will always be his legacy.
People have said that his novel, Jaws, was trashy but its not......there is just that one sex scene(which is not that graphically described). In fact, except for the ending I think the book is better. Great dialogue and character development, with extra unique subplots.
Jaws was Pete's only true, singular masterpiece. What he wrote for the T.V screen afterwards was pure dribble. The Beast ( a giant squid attacks a coastal town,Sound familiar does it!pete must've had a mental block and decided to re-hash the concept again to fill his dwindling bank account! What was the title of that other one where military scientists or some shit produced a half man-half shark to utilize as a weapon of war? It was so cheese ridden and ridiculous. Anyway, thanks for Jaws Pete.
I dived with Peter Benchley in Australia when he was underwater with two feeding tiger sharks and had a badly fogged face mask at the time. I showed him how to clear his mask underwater. It was obviously appreciated. We had an interesting private chat about his dealings with Hollywood movie producers. I saw him again some years later back in Australia while filming vanishing grey nurse sharks (at a time when the sharks were making a good comeback. Another typical distortion of facts.

I'm still saddened that he's gone; one of the last great American novelists. I love the film of Jaws but people, please, READ the book as well.
