  • You may have more views but it's not just about eyeballs it's about trust. Millions more trust askthisoldhouse vs some relatively unknown guy on youtube. I have been watching this old house on tv for over 20 years i just found out about you this year. If they were advertising and talking about that Dyson vs. you talking about it I would listen to them because they have built up trust and well known.

  • You've convinced me, I'm buying that Dyson vacuum...

  • @Maxid1 Hahahahahaha

  • good point from a good man

  • What's your point, magazines have been dying since the mid-90s, why are you portraying this as a unique fresh observation...also it seems like you are attempting to hasten the demise of "this old house magazine"...whats your angle, hmm.....

  • @pavelow235 I would recommend that you go back to the video and click the link in the Description of the video. That will give you what you need. Bottom Line: the ROI of a magazine ad goes down over time. Spend that same money on any number of online videos that demonstrate the product and the ROI goes up every day.

  • What advertisers have to figure out is that online ads dont have to be about click through direct linking to their product to purchase online. When I see a product in a video online, it may not be until my next trip to the hardware store that it ticks in my mind "hey this is what I saw online. I might just buy it." This is how print media ads work after all.

  • Nicely done and said Tim

  • Do people REALLY buy anything from online ad's ??

  • @myozone You can't be serious. Are you? How many BILLIONS of dollars of profit did Google make last year? Ninety-eight percent or more of their revenue is from online ads. The ads I sell from my newsletter have insanely high CTR and conversion rates. You bet people BUY things after seeing online ads.

  • @AsktheBuilder Maybe it's just me, I find ad's on TV and the internet really annoying. In fact I almost stopped viewing commercial TV here in the UK, just the BBC - no AD's YET ...

It would be interesting to see the demographics of folks that click and buy from ad's.

  • @myozone I understand you. But realize this. It's the ads that enable you to get the content on TV or the Internet for FREE. If people do not respond to the ads and occasionally CLICK them if the ads are of interest, then all this wonderful FREE content that you enjoy - well, it's going to disappear OR you'll be forced to pay for it. This weekend I'm taking two of my most popular FREE videos off of YouTube. If you want to watch them, you will have to pay.

  • @AsktheBuilder I guess if .001% of the 'millions' that see ad's then then go onto click it or buy it's worth it ?...

  • Corporation to corporation: deals are a lot easier to make. Corporation to freelancers on youtube: road less traveled, therefor less understood.

    Good points you made.

  • Tim, I think you've done a fantastic job with the branding of your videos and keeping the information consistent, to the point, and usable. Another terrific YouTube video maker is Apogeerockets (if you ever loved shooting off rockets, this is your guy.) He has a wonderful tutorial "stage set" and keeps the tutorials very focused. He uses 2-3 camera angles as well, which makes the videos amazingly professional...

  • For years, I purchased (print) ad space in industrial trade journals. (I also created the artwork). While it was nice seeing your work represented, there was hardly any traffic created by the ads. The only thing I remember is how a few companies had thought we'd gone out of business during a period when we weren't advertising as regularly. A lot of big companies advertise for just that reason--so people don't "think" they went out of business. But in real terms, the ads never did too well.

  • I agree with this video mostly. The only issue people might face is Youtube's hostile environment. People here are brutally honest. The reason AskTheBuilder is so popular is because he actually provides good videos worth watching. But not everybody knows how to make good videos. The Youtube community is largely inhospitable to commercial interests. Advertisements rank among the lowest in areas of popularity. But they can be very successful, if proper strategies are taken into account

  • Getting paid/compensated to review products in online videos is nothing new. However, there can be a real loss in sincerity when doing this. Consumers are much smarter today, than yesterday.

    Keep it real, literally.

  • Dyson vacuums suck and only have one ball.

I just wounder if Dyson paid for this video or was this video honest and legit ?

  • @FrankaDith Dyson did not pay me a cent. They have no idea this video exists. There ad just happened to be on the back cover of the magazine I was holding. Pure luck.

  • @AsktheBuilder Sorry about that ,i was trying to be funny and crapped out .

  • Hey Tim, all good points and the economics are correct but only IF the hit rate of the online video is not negatively impacted with the advertisements.. What am I saying? I'd probably continue watching your videos even if you had a 10-15-20 second ad at the beginning. But if you pushed beyond that - well, I think you might lose some of us.

Now, the fact that I see you like Rustoleum paint, Irwin and Dewalt tools - that means something to me. Will I buy those products because Tim uses them? :)

  • @rvandeloo I didn't do a good job in this video. I'm not saying a manufacturer should put an AD in my video. I'm saying that a manufacturer should pay me to do a simple video showing off their product. Now, it would NOT be a commercial - "Hi, I'm Tim Carter for IRWIN Tools." NO - NO WAY. It would be me telling the TRUTH about a good product saying, "Hi, I'm Tim Carter and I want to show you an innovative pair of pliers." Just as you point out, you trust me. I'd only do videos for good products.

  • All very good points Tim. Very well executed

  • i got the point. im just pointing out more revenue streams a guy like you could get and the exposure an advertiser would gain by working with you.

  • they could advertise on your videos...

  • @renh99 They can indeed, but you missed the point. I can produce a video about a product that appears in a static magazine ad. The video gets watched hundreds of thousands of times. The magazine ad ends up at the recycle center in 25 days never to be seen again. The video allows me to show the features of a product.

  • Dyson just got free video advertisement, it was now worth the 100,000.

  • @justinmerre HAHAHAHAHAHA Not really. And they paid about $125,000 for that ad.

  • Nice look at "will it blend' series from blendtec on youtube, they took advantage of youtube in a fun clever way.
