  • hey guys, i have a similar lesson. just check out patgfpmuller. I also have a solo putting this kind of thing in context in metal.

  • FYI... Dm7 to G7 is Pink Floyd's Any Colour You Like from DSOTM

  • hey marty, i wanted to ask whether this is right or not: now if i want to play d phrygian, would i simply take a chord progression and start my scale on the d note. (of course play the lowered second note)??

  • gawd finally found a more practical and more advanced level on modes!

  • oh my god that is such beautiful playing.

  • Marty, you're missing a nob! Haha!

  • i love ur my teacher but more rock and fast soloing then just blues would be very helpful :)

  • /watch?v=Abpx7UGM0hY&feature=related

if u can teach me to play like that then i'll take every class/ dvd u got

    ps. 21 -27 omg!!!!

  • hey Marty, what kind of pickguard is that?

  • OMG! If you and MarloweDK got together for a tutorial or a jam session?!!! May God help us all!!!!!!!!

  • Marty, love your vids dude

  • aint that dorian mode the same as A aeolian?

  • @trickyellis

yep A aeolian and D dorian have the same notes

  • alright! why is your eyes all red and glossy now :D

  • thank you for the lessons marty! after hearign this lesson of yours about how Santana uses this technique, it made me think RIGHT away, black magic woman! now i can totally solo over that song in ways i never thot possible! :)

please dont stop what you do, there are those who appreciate it greatly :D

  • thanks

  • Marty, this is a really good lesson. I hope you do more like this. I found it very useful. I am looking for a good way to have more options to solo over a progression. Thanks a lot. 4/22/11

  • marty, I am confused. I understand the pentatonic exstention that you are playing, but what I am seeing you play in the same position is the pattern for the Aeolian but using the d root. What am I missing. I thought the Dorian pattern was the 134,13,124,124,134,134?

  • I wonder which bastard disliked this video, he must have got a guitar neck shoved up his asshole.

  • Is there a formula reason for the relationship between a major 4th chord and dorian. I just understand things better when i see it in the basic formula layout.

  • i must say that i really hate your guitar :X(I mean the shape)

but i love you videos so muchhhhhhhhhhhhhh :DDD your the best!!!

  • thank you so much sir!

  • This didnt make sense to me, both Dorian and the minor pentatonic have a b3 and a b7 so whats the difference? Or am I being stupid and havn't realised that you're making us play the minor pentatonic first before introducing the tones of Dorian?

  • @Dazzerx minor PENTAtonic has 5 notes and the Dorian Scale Mode has 7 :3

  • @MrEatStudio LOL Yeah, I had an uber fail moment there, thanks man.

  • Is there a lesson or DVD set on the kind of little run you do at 4:50? I always hear you use it and can never really get behind how you do it. I think it's just the Minor Pentatonic scale going down down up, down down up (referring to the notes) etc. at really high speed but I'm not sure. Could you or anyone help me out on this one?

  • Great lesson! The best I've seen in awhile. Good job! Which dvd set covers the more intermediate stuff like this?

  • 1:27 you don't remember because the aliens erased you memory before they let you go; the super cool guitar playing aliens, that is.

  • omg i love this so much

  • What guitar is that?

  • dude. you are guitar teacher GOD!

  • what would you recomend as a budget hollow body electric?

  • marty you make me happy =D

  • Great thing about you is that you are teaching like you are a student yourself.

and that is why you keep surprising yourself and us . (is that Englisch ?)

  • Love this type of lesson - Whats great about Marty is that you mail him with a question and he always gets back to you - thats never changed no matter how many followers he gets - top man!!

  • can you use that dorian mode anywhere in the scales like as in up and down the fret board

  • It can sometimes be difficult to see the difference as F major and C major are only one note difference and the 2 scales and associated modes are extremely interchangable. Marty actually plays D minor penttonic AND D dorian here. Very confusing unless you can break it down completely and get an eye on the fact that F major AKA D minor descending plays A#, and Cmajor AKA D Dorian includes A all the time. Especially when using pentatonic D minor over it. Which does work.

  • @ShortOrderLectrician complicity is cool, inception whaha

  • power zone home row!! For real though, it totally is. AKA F major pentatonic. Cmajor 5 @ 6:08. I want that Mexi strat or the SG MARTY!!! Nice licks @ 9:00 on till it stopped bro. Nice explanation of why the modally played scale sounds differently than when played as its major scale or equivalent scale counterpart. AGAIN! GREAT VIDEO!

  • mr you are great

  • a lesson in the same style as this one for all the modes would be awesome

  • I love the name of the pedal! HA!

  • you should totally start an online teaching class..i would gladly pay you man!!your knowledge in guitar theories are just WOW!!

  • @Nipon76 He did bud.. it called guitarjamz...great site and well worth your money

  • @jgolf1446 yeah..i found out after going to his page..i'm paying for his lessons now..lol..thanks for the info anyways bro..

  • Hey Marty,

Is there a difference between the D Minor Scale and the D Dorian Mode?

  • @lafnbuddha Yes there is. D minor descending can be interpretted as F major scale form, while D dorian cannot. This can be confusing because my masters level drummer, music professor, college jazz band instructor referred to scales as D dorian all the time and what i played was clearly D minor pentatonic which infuriated me. D dorian is C major with the root shifted to D in the same scale form. This is evident because D dorian is AKA C Ionian AKA C-major. D minor is AKA F major.

  • this lessons are awsome ;]

  • Marty, you're amazing. I noticed one one has done a tutorial for "droplets" by Colbie Caillat and Jason Reeves, so i was wondering if you could do a tutorial for the finger picking because I want to be able to play this song for my girlfriend that is moving away.

  • Marty, your amazing. I noticed that no one has done a guitar lesson for "Droplets" by Colbie Caillat and Jason Reeves. I want to play it for my girlfriend, so i was wondering if you could do a lesson on the finger picking for the song.

  • yeah this is a very interesting lesson

    thanks

  • You are the man! How shall I do your bidding master? Until I build my jedi guitar skills from your tutorials to beat your ass on the frets...lol.

  • intro - cool

  • Marty you got a new hat!!! lol weird question but where do you get your hats?

  • Hi Marty....question...is this scale used in "sultans of swing" cool vid....thanks for your great vids...cheers from switzerland

  • @pnigos There's a video there somewhere where one of Marty's buddies breaks down the sultans of swing solo. As always, it's very well explained, but still a bastard-hard solo!

  • Hey Marty! Do you prefer individual stompboxes or multieffects?

  • That's the only channel on youtube on which I never see any dislikes.

  • thanx for the lesson marty ^^

  • Marty, all that i know about playing, i've learned from you! Thank you!

  • thanks man.....I learn much from you

  • Yeah man..thats what im talking about!! Please mor of this advanced stuff!!

    Question:

Thats the same schale like A Aeolina and C Ionic right??I mean D Dorina its the same like C Major Scale, right??

  • @flashpadxxx

Yes, he uses D dorian, its the "same" as C ionian (major). Would be better to show the dorian scale in another key, cause it can be pretty confusing...

  • I pretty much jizzed during that solo towards the ending. That was incredible.

  • Dude, you always get me motivated and make things so much simpler and easier. Your videos are awesome and you do YouTube and guitar players a FANTASTIC service! Thank you!!

  • Excellent explanation... what mode is... great! Thanks alot!!

  • Awesome man! Thanks a million! By the way, just the way my mind works, at the "Whoops" at 8:09, you could hit the note one half-step lower and no one would have noticed.

  • thanks man. this helps heaps. I don't have anyone to practice with so I enjoy learning new scales and ideas from you :D

  • @BassOnABudget Get yourself a loop pedal dude, it will change your life!

  • @BaileysMariner i have one :D It's just not the same as playing with another person though.

  • Thank you soooooooooooooo much~!! Love to ya~!

  • great lesson thanks

  • great lesson man these licks are very tasty

  • u are my hero

  • Very useful for beginners.

  • cool stuff man

  • great lesson. i learn so much from you. i relly want to learn jessy maccartney why don't you kiss her if you can do lesson please

  • Great lesson. For improv I tend to see the fretboad as A aeolian in 5th position, D Dorian in 10th position and C ionian in 12th position. Just the way my mind works, one scale to rule them all:)

  • I... didn't understand any of that. My mind was too busy being blown away, anyway.

  • i think what marty is saying works because d minor 7 is the 2nd degree of c. and g dominant 7 is the fifth of c, so a dorian in c will work.

  • great lesson thanks Marty! i like ur intermediate advanced lessons i work on this stuff i learned from ur dvds. keep up all the good work some of the dorian licks really have trey anestasio sound!!

  • nice one marty, great lesson. Any of the modal lessons are really appreciated dude. Are you planning on doing more of this type for aeolian etc? Thanks again man

  • couldn't you say that when you're in Dorian with the root on the 5th string then you use the Aeolian shape?

  • Top end, major dude. Thanks for expaining how it works. It kinda made me recall a part of my poorly invested youth when a teacher tried to get that into my head while I was busy pickin' my nose. Thanks for the post.

  • Gosh that is freaking sick Marty, i am so jealous man.

  • opps! 8:09...he is human after all!

  • @strongbad73 Nah, he was programmed to do that so that he doesn't raise suspicion with his inhuman skillzz.

  • @Itsooz lol nice

  • you make it look so easy, but the rhythm you have is to die for. even over the simplest progressions. so inspiration to learn because of the simplicity of how its played. love these intermediate vids. keep them comin.

  • Your the man... always learn alot from you!

  • You can see the passion in his face when playing, loving the lessons M8.
