hey marty, i wanted to ask whether this is right or not: now if i want to play d phrygian, would i simply take a chord progression and start my scale on the d note. (of course play the lowered second note)??
thank you for the lessons marty! after hearign this lesson of yours about how Santana uses this technique, it made me think RIGHT away, black magic woman! now i can totally solo over that song in ways i never thot possible! :)
please dont stop what you do, there are those who appreciate it greatly :D
Marty, this is a really good lesson. I hope you do more like this. I found it very useful. I am looking for a good way to have more options to solo over a progression. Thanks a lot. 4/22/11
marty, I am confused. I understand the pentatonic exstention that you are playing, but what I am seeing you play in the same position is the pattern for the Aeolian but using the d root. What am I missing. I thought the Dorian pattern was the 134,13,124,124,134,134?
Is there a formula reason for the relationship between a major 4th chord and dorian. I just understand things better when i see it in the basic formula layout.
This didnt make sense to me, both Dorian and the minor pentatonic have a b3 and a b7 so whats the difference? Or am I being stupid and havn't realised that you're making us play the minor pentatonic first before introducing the tones of Dorian?
Is there a lesson or DVD set on the kind of little run you do at 4:50? I always hear you use it and can never really get behind how you do it. I think it's just the Minor Pentatonic scale going down down up, down down up (referring to the notes) etc. at really high speed but I'm not sure. Could you or anyone help me out on this one?

Love this type of lesson - Whats great about Marty is that you mail him with a question and he always gets back to you - thats never changed no matter how many followers he gets - top man!!
It can sometimes be difficult to see the difference as F major and C major are only one note difference and the 2 scales and associated modes are extremely interchangable. Marty actually plays D minor penttonic AND D dorian here. Very confusing unless you can break it down completely and get an eye on the fact that F major AKA D minor descending plays A#, and Cmajor AKA D Dorian includes A all the time. Especially when using pentatonic D minor over it. Which does work.
power zone home row!! For real though, it totally is. AKA F major pentatonic. Cmajor 5 @ 6:08. I want that Mexi strat or the SG MARTY!!! Nice licks @ 9:00 on till it stopped bro. Nice explanation of why the modally played scale sounds differently than when played as its major scale or equivalent scale counterpart. AGAIN! GREAT VIDEO!
@lafnbuddha Yes there is. D minor descending can be interpretted as F major scale form, while D dorian cannot. This can be confusing because my masters level drummer, music professor, college jazz band instructor referred to scales as D dorian all the time and what i played was clearly D minor pentatonic which infuriated me. D dorian is C major with the root shifted to D in the same scale form. This is evident because D dorian is AKA C Ionian AKA C-major. D minor is AKA F major.
Marty, you're amazing. I noticed one one has done a tutorial for "droplets" by Colbie Caillat and Jason Reeves, so i was wondering if you could do a tutorial for the finger picking because I want to be able to play this song for my girlfriend that is moving away.

@pnigos There's a video there somewhere where one of Marty's buddies breaks down the sultans of swing solo. As always, it's very well explained, but still a bastard-hard solo!
Yes, he uses D dorian, its the "same" as C ionian (major). Would be better to show the dorian scale in another key, cause it can be pretty confusing...
Dude, you always get me motivated and make things so much simpler and easier. Your videos are awesome and you do YouTube and guitar players a FANTASTIC service! Thank you!!
Awesome man! Thanks a million! By the way, just the way my mind works, at the "Whoops" at 8:09, you could hit the note one half-step lower and no one would have noticed.
Great lesson. For improv I tend to see the fretboad as A aeolian in 5th position, D Dorian in 10th position and C ionian in 12th position. Just the way my mind works, one scale to rule them all:)
great lesson thanks Marty! i like ur intermediate advanced lessons i work on this stuff i learned from ur dvds. keep up all the good work some of the dorian licks really have trey anestasio sound!!
nice one marty, great lesson. Any of the modal lessons are really appreciated dude. Are you planning on doing more of this type for aeolian etc? Thanks again man
Top end, major dude. Thanks for expaining how it works. It kinda made me recall a part of my poorly invested youth when a teacher tried to get that into my head while I was busy pickin' my nose. Thanks for the post.
you make it look so easy, but the rhythm you have is to die for. even over the simplest progressions. so inspiration to learn because of the simplicity of how its played. love these intermediate vids. keep them comin.
