  • I am attending a Kanazawa Seminar now because one of our Sensei in town is hosting him. I have a dojo of my own and frankly I am not impressed with the students that he has produced. Shut up about Kanazawa, people act like Japanese should be the only people that should be good at Karate. Valdesi is extemely good, hes fast and precise, which is how karate should be.

  • IT´S SAD HOW KARATE IS LOOSING THE REAL DO..... JUST FOR INSTANCE TAKE A LOOK "HIDETO TSUCHIYA" SOCHIN....

I AM PRETTY SURE NISHIYAMA, KANAZAWA, ASAI, TANAKA, KAWASOE AND OTHER REAL KARATE DO SENSEI WOULD NEVER SEE THIS KIND OF SPORT (NOT KARATE) AS KARATE....

LET´S LEAVE THIS PEOPLE IN THEIR WORLD OF FAKE KARATE.....THATS IT.

  • This guy does not have kime. His punches are to flicky, that's how he gets that, exaggerated snap. Real kime is smooth and heavy feeling when it hits. I'd kill for his flexibility but his applicable power is lacking. But I agree, he achieves what he is trying to attain 100%. Too much theatrics, not enough practicality for me though.

  • I really do not feel that there is a basis of comparison comparing his version of Gojushiho Dai to Kanazawa's. The standard (competitively) for Gojushiho Dai is Dario Marchini. Take a look at his videos of the kata... very traditional... even Valdesi's version doesn't compare... and i'm sure valdesi himself knows it...

  • EVERYONE!

    Explanation of Kanazawa/Valdesi:

Shotokan, in theory, is the most dynamic martial art. Therefore, true power is not derived from punching as if one's arm were an iron ball; rigidity impedes energy. One "should" punch as if their arm were an iron chain, and at the end of it an iron ball; suppleness enables buoyancy and therefore explosiveness.

Shotokan, to me, is mainly about directness of energy. Both styles are perhaps equally as effective, one, however, is just a little quicker.

  • In my opinion, one should watch this, then immediately watch Kanazawa's Gojushiho Sho. (Remember Kanazawa's Sho and Dai are switched in comparison to, for instance, Mr. Valdesi.)

The differences are profound and important.

    Seriously, go watch it now.

  • @MeanEyedCats

The old karate version is.... old... Kanazawa don't have enough Kime and sharpness... The way Valdesi do the Katas is excellent !!! Go see him performing the Heian... those are perfect in timing and precision !... old karate old karate... we dont give a shit ... NOW karate is precision and sharpness !!

  • @BabokCriss I couldn't disagree more.

Although I will allow that Valdesi is good at what he does. It's just that what he does is not what Kanazawa-sensei et. al. do. Also I believe that Kanazawa-sensei et. al. do what they do better than Valdesi does what he does, but that's neither here nor there.

  • @MeanEyedCats

There's two way to see karate i think ... competition Way and traditional way..

I prefer the way they do in competition... more Kime... more sharpness... it'S more impressive ... their movements are not just rapid... they're rapid but with the precision and Kime ... Its Sharp !! ... secondly... we have to see good Tempo in every kata ... tak ...tak tak... tak... tak tak...this karate is more beautiful than old karate for sure(but I highly respect old karate)

    5th kyu shotokan

  • @BabokCriss

While you're perfectly entitled to prefer sport karate to traditional karate (and I'm glad you make that distinction, because I do as well), I think you're very off-base regarding kime. I believe that the kime in sport karate tends to be superficial and unconvincing. It's like comparing actors in a historical drama to the real event. The historical drama will look prettier, but it's going to tend to be shallow, superficial, and often rather vapid.

  • @BabokCriss While I would agree that it's more "visually impressive", I do not think that is synonymous with "more beautiful". I find the likes of Kanazawa-sensei to be utterly incomparable with the likes of Mr. Valdesi.

    All the best,

    Joe

    2nd dan Shotokan

  • @BabokCriss With all respect to you, I don't think you can compare Kanazawa kansho to Luca Valdesi. Of course, Valdesi is probably a good competitor, but his kime is superficial. Go see Osaka's and Kagawa's katas and you will see true kime. Finally, I don't think you can judge all these katas with a 5th kyu, with all respect. Keep training!

  • From the cut of the gi, excess belt length, drama laden pauses, big stomping sounds often resulting in being out of balance, quick hand movements with no body connection (again for performance).

His kata is for others to watch, not for his personal karate to grow.

Observations based on 37 years of Shotokan training.

  • For me the gi jacket length is not an issue to me as I like mine a little on the long side too. But then again I am 6'1" and 280 lbs. It does sound like the gi is starched to the max though! And the belt is a LITTLE long!

I want him to show me CLEAN technique, not lightning-quick crap!

It's a good show kata, but that's all it is.

37 years of training, I envy you.

I am a Cho-dan in TKD and a San-kyu in Shotokan, around 7 years of combined training time. I have a LONG way to go!

  • I totally agree ... and some totally weird hero worship going on their as well

Observations based on 23 years of Shotokan Training - but I suppose even us begginners are allowed an opinion :-)
