  • pickeldreamer is correct

  • its probably a loose piston pin or connecting rod....timing is not the issue thats mechanical

  • Its all ways the timing set in the AMC's I had them same noise and it was the cam lobes , rocker arms and worn timing chain , so always replace those before you put that used amc in your jeep !

  • that is not a rod i do not believe to light of a tap a rod has a hard tap like i said and a squeak all the rod bearings i heard had a squeak to them and really squeak after they spin so did you find out hat it was im gonna have to say about 75 percent certasin a lifter cuz like i said my 350 is doing the same thing plus has a miss with the tapping noise a wrist pin or rod wouldnt make it miss just knock like crazy and squeak its amazing a bunch of people come on here hollering rod bearing

  • also i replaced my flexplate rthinking it was it and was not it so im eaither down to one of three things 1. collapsed lifter from the antifreeze that got in my oil when i had my heads go out which i have replaced now and the road and main bearings as well or 2 .wrist pin as stated or 3 flat camshaft and collapsed lifter i do not think that is a rod your are hearing thought a rod has a heavy rapping and a squeak sometimes plus when you gas it it would really hammer if it were a rod loud as rpms^

  • same noise my 79 350 4 bolt main is making i know for sure its not a rod because its got 75 pounds oil pressure down the road and 50 at idleso its not a rod or a main its like they said a lifter or wrist pin one im thinking lifter but it could be a wrist pin you never know

  • lifters are war or bent push rod

  • I say its the muffler too, yes mount the coil sideways so the electricity pours out better

  • good idea

  • I say its the muffler too

  • definitely sounds like lifters. not loud enough to be a rod or wrist pin. thats my opinion though

  • sounds like ur lifters went mine sounded like that when mine went

  • bad wrist pin. pull the plug wires one at a time, when the knock goes away, you found the cylinder. ether way a full rebuilds in your future.

  • Keep revving it up like that and you won;t have to worry about it for long......

  • Lower end knock can be heard, and the louder tapping is a valve train noise.

  • its prob a bad lifter or worse a worn out cam, i just replaced my cam from being flat spotted

  • if it overheated check the dip stick for water in the heads, or just unscrew the oil filter and look for water. u probibly have a cracked head, or a little bit of water went in the engine.

  • get that wire off the choke, plus that coil has to be on its side for it to work better

  • so pixeldreamer what is it no one things it pistion slap but i know amc motors well and sound thay make i dieing to know pls do tell

  • dude...had this a few times with my car. its DEFINATELY a loose rocker arm. Fairly easy fix. maybe 3 hours of work at most at home. Use thread locker when adjusting the rocker arms too.

  • I'm gonna go with the cracked flexplate...too slow of a rap to be lower end.

  • CRACKED FLEX PLATE

  • Probably a broken bridge

  • bad pushrod(s)

  • sounds like valves

  • The sound might be the valve train slapping because the lifter is slow to react. If it is seized there should be little to no oil coming through the push rod to the top of the head for that one valve.

  • It sounds like a seized lifter take your valve cover off and check the play of the rocker arms at TDC for cylinder. You may need to run the motor with the valve cover off and then watch the rockers. If there is a bad lifter the rocker arm will be making noise and easer to see / here with no valve cover. Try putting a rag on the rocker's when you do it it will catch most of the oil. And most important only do ONE bank at a time. The other bank will need to supply oil to the cam shaft and lifters

  • Check you starter bolts and the screws that hold the selinoid to the starter

  • sounds like valve train, could be a piece of carbon, but ,check that valve train first

  • sounds like carbon knock, run engine til hot, remove aircleaner. dribble water through intake, you may have to rev engine to keep from stalling. key is to dribble. steam will blow out carbon

  • Whats that going on right under the choke? Looks like sparks jumping off the wire. Is #8 getting spark to the plug?

  • I was water sitting on the intake.

  • @pixeldreamer sounds like its a lifter or rocker tick like your not getting enough oil to the back of the galley or to the top end if you look up the back oiler mod its made for running if your going to run high rpm it helps oil get to the back of the galley by running a line right to the back berrings that are getting starved

  • good eye man,..now that you mention it i see it to.. everyone says valves,..but could it be a rod working loose also?

  • sounds like maybe some weak valve springs? It' definitely in the top end..

  • Don't be a stranger, tell us what you've found? I like some of these suggestions but I'd like to know what you've found.

  • I have not taken it apart yet, sitting in the garage on engine stand.

  • mine was doing that it was the timing it was to advanced a man told me this at my jeep space ,he was right my 360 runs a lot smoother now ,and no rattling

  • dose it do this under load when you are driving ?

  • i had a 401 that sound like this, 1 of the bore where done wrong when the motor was rebilt, bora was to big, the sound is call piston slap. iv own every v8 amc motor made from 68 to 76 290,304,343,360,390,401 and iv only heard this noize ones on my 401 i drove it like that a long time :)

good luck if your lucky you can have the piston nearld to make it fater but in time that ware down to stock cast piston are soft.

  • sounds like you got some work to do, start with a look under the valve covers

  • here's how to fix it; bore it, stroke it, new valves, intake, carb, cam and there you have it!

  • since it goes away when you have higher rpms it is my opinion that it is a stuck lifter try running some engine flush through the system and go with a good grade 10w40 oil and a qt of lucas oil treatment i think that should solve your problem jeep engines are known for their clicks and clacks. hope this helps.

  • If thats a quadra-trac jeep, check the flywheel and torque converter bolts. They back out after being run hard.

  • Sounds like a bent pushrod...pull valve covers

  • sounds like a rod banging to me

  • sounds like you have a valve rattling to me.

  • AMC means, All Makes of Cars.

  • Bad lifter!!!

  • sounds like the timings of your heads are off in your manifold

its a easy cheap Fix :)

  • put a couple bottles of lucas in it. amc's dont die

  • i had a amc 360 that siezed up because the oil pump went out. when you overheated it the oil pump probably got damaged because of the lost lubrication. try replacing the oil pump and put in full synthetic oil(Quakerstate). the oil pump was the reason why mine siezed up, but i got a new 360 and put it in. good luck

  • the new one is in the works, (well new used one at least.) stripped it this pas weekend got another one already on the stand :)

  • That's the best engine i've ever built. Damn good engine.

  • ya man that sounds like something in the valves or maybe your cams starting to shit
