Domingo has a dark voice, and his range doesnt allow him to get a hig c, any person that knows not only about opera but a person who sings opera know this. there are a lot of different kinds of voices even between tenors, baritones or basses. In addition, Domingo is not only a tenor, but a very complete musician, listen to the video thas is called ººPlacido Domingo sings and plays Granadaºº and you will see what i mean. dont be so close minded.
domingo is tenor, but has a hard time with high notes because his technique isn't correct. still he is a wonderful singer and sounds wonderful until he goes above A natural.
Domingo is and always was a tenor, you don't "become" a tenor, he just happens to have extremely good low notes. I heard Josh Groban state that he was a "tenor in training". He is and always will be a baritone although he has very good high notes. Just because you have good high notes does not make you a tenor. Sherrill Milnes is a perfect example, he had one hell of a high b flat, but he is a baritone.
I don't understand why people compare Josh Groban to opera singers. He is a pop singer. He has never performed professionally in an opera. I'm not saying he's not good, but his tone is not operatic, even if he has taken some operatic vocal lessons.
You are right wiseguy, Josh Groban does not have what it takes to be a true opera singer, however, he is one of the best male singers to come along in decades, he has a decent sized voice with excellent range, and a beautiful tone, one of my favorite male singers ever.
@somewiseguy84 I think it is because he was classically trained for a while and many people would had liked to have seen what he could have done in that arena had he continued. I think he could have had an operatic tone had he wanted to pursue that kind of a career, but he has chosen what is best for him. Comparisons are always going to happen, but I take joy knowing that God has given each of us a distinct voice of our own to bless the world in unique ways. :)
Domingo started out as a baritone, trained his way to a tenor, and now that he is getting older he is going back to baritone roles. Yes it is possible to train yourself to gain higher notes and lower notes, just takes a lot of time.
By the way, Josh Groban is one of the best singers ever, one of my favorites. Listen closely to his live performances and his studio recordings and you will hear that the recordings are electronically "tenored up". This is done to boost sales because the world over prefers a tenor. Again, He is one of the best singers ever.
Fg-Gigli could sing beautifully though. Big difference. Domingo always sounded throaty, hooted, and pushed. Yes. SOme tenor's vocal range is shorter but the idea is to sing superbly in that range -something Do(???) never mastered. How many times have we seen Do(???)Mingo running out of breath, flat, and with ZERO squillo when he needed to produce even an A4?

sin duda alguna el mejor tenor sin despreciar a sus homologos que por supuesto tienen tambien una tecnica y una voz estupenda pero pavarotti!!!! bueno para muestra un boton
The said fact is that Mingo first tried to be a top tenore lyrico and ended up being a midget next to Pava and Aragall. Then he tried to sell himself as a spinto and in comparison to Corelli, del Monaco, Tucker etc ended up sounding like a joke. Then he settled on becoming a tenore dramatico and moved into very heavy roles for which there weren't many top tenors in that fach. His 140 (or more perhaps) roles are nothing but artistic prostitution. As long as they paid, he yelled.
Fantastic! Why this opera wasn't videotaped, I'll never know. Not only did he sing like a god, but comic opera was really his forte...especially Donizetti. Thank you for sharing this rare clip.
@dee1153 I agree totally with you, the greatest tenor. Final`s 9c`s superbs, loud ,clear and what a powerfull voice , my god !!!! We all missed him :(
I wish people would stop bitching about Domingo's high C's. He can hit them (I've heard him), but they are not his forte. You hear Caruso being praised as the be all end all, but he didn't have a High C, at least not one to brag about.
Domingo is not technically capable of a High C. It's a trick prevalent among Tenors who have difficulty in the upper register to emit the note in a falsetto and bounce it off their palate to make it sound like chest voice instead of head voice, which is what it actually is. A Tenor without the F and the High C is not a real Tenor. In other words, the only real Tenor was Luciano Pavarotti.
True, with good training and developing the proper technique, someone who is indeed a tenor should be able to sing a High C. For example, I'm a freshman in college and I am undoubtably a tenor, yet b/c i don't have proper technique and breath support my highest note that i'd sing in public is a Bb, but my voice teacher @ college (Australian opera singer Donna Balson) says that i'll b able to get the higher notes soon, i just need to be taught the proper technique to "access" them.
LouiseMenchise-Lowered expectations from a 43 yo person who is scraping the bottom of the artistic barrel in filmaking? You might want to reflect upon your denial.
only real tenor? (awesome one but not the only person in the world to be able to sing a top c)
did he sing othello as much as del monaco? del monaco was a real tenor if you ask me, but we shouldnt compare. we should not compare pavarotti to del monaco or domingo (therefore i am a hippocrite :P) because they are totally different voices.
and define capable, please operabuff.
if you mean effortless, then nothing is ever effortless. especially in opera, you need to always support.
Del Monaco could sing his fach very well. Mingo made a living yelling for as long as they paid him to do so. Don't even put Mingo in the same sentence with Del Monaco and Pavarotti.
Operabuff23 - are you a tenor? from the sound of it, probably not. you seem to understand the technical workings of the voice - but you're missing the point - us singers don't go on sound, but rather sensations as we sing - and to say that a 'tenor' uses falsetto to sing a high C and 'bounce' it off their palate is really misguided.
Pavarotti is a true tenor, no doubt, however, there are many many tenors who have made fruitful careers without having to sing past a High Bb.
Domingo not only is "not technically capable of a High C", but he's not capable of singing beautifully. His voice is extremely boring. He really sucks!
I was led to this via searching Jaun Dieago Florez at the Met April 21 2008. To see Pav crank it out in 1975 is truly a treat! Millions can't be wrong...
Same year 1973 you put Domingo on the same stage and couldn't hit the same notes nor had the same beauty, not even with a kick on the testicles Domingo was capable of half of what Pavarotti was on the same year, same stage same role. (By the way Domingo never sang Tonio)
You are terrible wrong, Domingo is a tenor, but a short tenor, incapable of getting high C's, nevertheless the list is quite big. Even Beniamino Gilgi had serious troubles to get high C's so I do not dare to compare. I enjoy every tenor in their best and suitable roles.
Domingo never had a glorious B and you'd be considered lucky if he could hear him sing a good A4. He has a poor technique and always sounded throaty, hooted and pushed.
Doming was originally a Baritone, and through training added the tenor range on to his existing baritone range and "became" a tenor....i read an article on it when Pavarotti passed away, they were talking about the "Three Tenors" and brought it up
I never knew that Pava. was a baritone. I don't think that's accurate. I know Domingo started as a bari. but trained to the higher notes. Luciano, like his dad, came out of the gate as a tenor and what a tenor he was. Riposa in pace maestro!
No no...Pavarotti was indeed a natural tenor....I just meant that Domingo was a baritone..They were just talking about the 3 tenors in the article and said Doming was really a baritone, not Pavarotti or Carreras they were natural tenors...Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear the first time
Domingo is a Tenor, he actually started out singing as a baritone because he thought he was a baritone and was told that he was. The longer he sang his voice got higher and brighter, he IS a Tenor with very strong and dark low notes.
Lacaf-Thanks for irrevocably showing to us all that you are an idiot. The person who posted the clip was lucky enough to get this unofficial footage which was shot from the sidelines by a staff member (most likely) for his/her own collection. Then the music was simple attached to it afterward prior to posting on YT. The film is most likely a 8mm one with no sound. In a previous post you were suggesting that Pava's top was weak and unmusical! Now get lost you clueless little fiddlestick.
This was indeed recorded by a staff memeber, the stage manager. If you look at my posting, I have more of the footage included. This was video was part of a 15 min movie that had video footage of the highlights of the 1973 season at the Met. The video, made as a commic video, also has Norma, Lucia, Hoffmann and concert footage. There is sound in the orginal source, but it is 70's pop music, again provided for commic effect. I believe the orginal credits lable this an Acme Production.
That is absolutely intriguing, so in theory, the stage manager recorded the whole opera from the side lines? Which means that it should be some where... You don't suppose it originally had sound with it do you?
I would say yes, and that is because I have seen other videos from the Met that were recorded in this manner, and they did have audio. This is most likely sitting in a box somewhere, and long forgotten about.
How could anyone possibly be any better? It's extraordinary - love it!
