Don, this is smokin'. Your right hand technique is really interesting, too--a variation of what most folks call the "Benson" technique. I use this technique, too, for jazz, but I change to a more traditional pick angle/style with string damping for blues, rock, and fusion.
@SPGGuitar251 If Mickey Mantle could hit home runs from both sides of the plate WE guitarists can angle the pick both ways....RIGHT? I mean LEFT? I mean.....
You've probably heard it way too often by now, but I need to tell you that you're an amazing jazz guitarist. I will be doing my fair share of transcribing on this solo for sure. THANK YOU! Greets,
@weskoki they are enough but it doesn't sound as a live session !!! it sounds like playing with a play along ! i wish to buy his cd....any hint where i can but it?
@acappellaworld Just trying to keep up with the backing track{when I'm able}.Please check out my slower version with far less CLAMS..The best player{players} in the world don't need any advice from us......RIGHT??????
You are a great player but nevertheless I quote Pat Metheny:'The number of notes you play is not that important. Just think of that one note that can make a difference'
@acappellaworld Jazz guitar great JIMMY BRUNO got a lot of public flack by commenting on Metheny and the endless masses that seem to believe he{Metheny} is the 2nd comming.... I better keep my mouth shut..
It is a wel known fact that many jazzguitarists are stinking jalous of Metheny's lucrative way of merchandising but they seem to forget (or don't want to hear) the marvellous things he did (and does) with his trio. Moreover Bruno is so stupid that he even doen's realise that he has been influenced by Metheny himself! Just listen to his solo's and you know what I mean.
@acappellaworld I think you're a bit confused. There seems to be some sort of stigma to any player who plays fast nowadays. Did it ever occur to you that it's not always about showing off, and that some times that's just the way people play? Yes, you'll hear many stories along the lines of "I used to play fast in my younger days, but I learned not to". It doesn't have to be negative. Who are you to say that someone who plays fast doesn't express as much emotion and musicality as on who does not?
@acappellaworld Context. This tune is approx 300 bpm depending on the chart you have. So that means the lines Don is playing are eighth notes. Listen to any up tempo tunes like this and most players do the same type of phrasing. Even the famous Coltrane recording of this tune is up near 300, and he blows through it non stop. Just my 2 cents worth.
I love listening to music like this with a good player playing on the edge! To me that's as good as it gets, playing just on the edge and not falling off!
PS...look for the upcoming method book based on Don's soloing style over "Giant Steps" (including full transcription) soon. Very soon, we hope! Until publication, it will not be available. But, you can contact me or Don, and we will put you on a notification list when the book becomes available. Many thanks! Tim Quinn
@strwy2hvn94 I expertly transcribed Don's soloing on Giant Steps & also created a method book based around his soloing on this song. Don's classic jazz lines, economy of motion, and classic tone make him the perfect study. "How to Solo Over Giant Steps for Guitarists" ( a collaborative effort from Don & me) is unlike any other out there, because it starts with an actual performance of someone who can actually tear over the changes...as opposed to an academic "how to" from an author who can't!
@ZurabMelua ....Yes and NO---I know the Phrases before I play them...but they NEVER fit together the same way twice....a larger collection of phrases would have made this solo seem more "IMPROVISED"
I saw this video and I put my guitar down, I should just quit!!!! Nah, just kidding... Awesome! Loved the sound of that guitar, too. What kind of guitar is it?
Hey, let the camera roll for a take, start to finish. Pretty interesting to watch the challenge at this tempo. But the lines are so smooth most of the time.
I've just started seriously woodshedding this piece and the whole Maj 3rds cycle concept in general and I must say this is inspiring and intimidating in equal measure! Btw the poster just behind your right shoulder looks like you with either Tal Farlow or Les Paul - am I right?
@hakanozelguitarist NICE GUESS--but wrong....it'sthe late jazz drumming ICON LOUIE BELLSON......the kindest gentleman I ever met....he put up with me for 8 years....THANK-YOU LOUIE................good-luck with Maj3rds.....be carefull--it's addictive
@str4to "jazz shred crap"...actually dude, you probably don't feel anything with insight like that. You try "feeling it" when playing that song, at that speed. There's nothing to feel except concentration, which is what he is doing. "jazz shred crap"...pfft.
@upT3mpo it's kind of sad you think that way, music is way more than just concentration (especially in jazz) and improvisation becomes really interesting when it comes from your imagination, not from the fact that you know you can play a F diminished arpeggio on a G7b9 because G is a half step lower than Ab which is the b3rd of F diminished... music is not about what you know but what you hear...
@upT3mpo you really don't get the meaning of my comment do you? forget the theory play with your ears... what Don Nick plays is a good application of the theory I'm sure he's learned, but I think he's too thinking way too much. what he's playing there is not improvisation to me. don't get me wrong (again) you can improvise fast and be creative (metheny, coltrane,...) /watch?v=ApI-zA6suXE listen to his improvisation, his guitar is singing.
@str4to Young man from Belgium...everthing you say is very true...but keep one thing in mind...the most important thing that you will ever learn......is what you learn AFTER you know it all.
@NickPycks6 you're 100% right, working and learning theory is mandatory in music, but I don't get the point of filming exercises and put them on youtube to impress people. If I say that to you it's just becauseI believe you could be a great guitarist (a lot better than I am right now!) if you were playing with your ears and not with your brain. Learning theory is good but getting stuck in it is sooo bad.
@upT3mpo you fucking hater I'm just telling what I feel and think by watching this video and you're trying to push me into a "who's got the biggest" game. I have never claimed I'm a better guitarist ("better" is not a word to use in art I think). I am studying jazz theory atm and never said its unnecessary. If you don't even try to understand what I say just piss off please.
@upT3mpo I think getting advices and comments is what youtube is made for... If he'd got only good feedback he'd be the next Coltrane... Come on this is about music not brain wanking. he's got well enough good comments, no need for ass licking.
@upT3mpo --THANKS for watching my back.... TWO choices...you BLOCK them..or you...."SUFFER FOOLS GLADLY".....He's not the first jazz guitar infant to visit and he won't be the last
@NickPycks6 No worries Nick, loved the video (and the first Giant Steps one) - fantastic work! True, "only a fool takes up a fools argument". There are always going to be people who find it easier to talk it up than play it up. I think they're called..."singers"? All the best mate :)

Awesome, Don. Thanks for sharing...I plan on doing some transcribing. 16 bars, 10 key centers/modulations, and at a break-neck pace. Fantastic playing!
@totsmarkopolis --- I've never learned the rest stroke...On this video I'm goofing with the so called Benson grip..Does the rest stroke work with that?
I am a guitar major at a college in pennsylvania, I am doing giant steps for a recital. This is a tough piece and you are really playing it nicely. Are you still working off the chords or is this based more off of longer scalar runs?
I'd be honored if you'd take a look at my vids, there are a few solo guitar clips on my channel where I practise GS, and a few other tunes. Maybe you have some advice concerning my playing?
Really impressive. I'm practising this tune for some time now, but at slower tempos, so I can appreciate the mastery in your playing. What's interesting is your different right hand technique compared to the slower version. I think it supports the even eights at this blazing speed without getting tired or tense, while making the sound a bit thinner.
Excellent playing Don! 1st off: I personally love how you phrase the qtr note lines. It gives the music a chance to "breathe." Phrasing is damn near flawless. ? for you: I'm sure you've studied all the digital patterns, arpeggios and various chord subs, different scales/modal ideas and what not, but what is your thinking in connects the various chromatic patterns intervallically while keeping a very fluid phrase? That's the type of playing I've always wished I had. I suppose gotta start slow 1st
Nice job, Nick...great technique and a sense of humor to match it. Trying to read the headstock but is that a Benedetto? You're endorsing those - yes?
No-it's an Eastman..a poor-man's Benedetto...I was added to the Eastman roster by the late Jim Fisch..an irreplaceable jazz guitar patron..missed by all who knew him
very clean riffs, awesome. As far as what lwoods was saying, I think its cool if you were trying to do a motif on it... but if youre doing it because you have trouble on those chords continuing your lines then id say keep trying to push through them. very nice though :)
You rule it old man ... Haha

KABRIS1 1 year ago
@seirra1170 the guy's playing too fast to play with his eyes as well as his hands.

Please could your make a youtube lesson about your approach to the tune and maybe share some ideas? Would be appreciated by us all!

sweet lord that's fast. are you using the rest stroke?
totsmarkopolis 1 year ago
@totsmarkopolis --- I've never learned the rest stroke...On this video I'm goofing with the so called Benson grip..Does the rest stroke work with that?
NickPycks6 1 year ago
Dude, you looked like you getting a bullet taken out without some gas!!! That was awesome.
beau5375 1 year ago
@beau5375 On my slow version--the advice was to pass gas

How long did you spend on this song? Also did you sight read it?
shadowknight132 1 year ago
Did I sight read the solo...-No-.....How long? I don't know...I'm still spending
NickPycks6 1 year ago
@shadowknight132 This is an improvised solo.

I am a guitar major at a college in pennsylvania, I am doing giant steps for a recital. This is a tough piece and you are really playing it nicely. Are you still working off the chords or is this based more off of longer scalar runs?
JeremyBassGuitar 1 year ago
@JeremyBassGuitar The "longer scale runs" are based on the chords---they are NOT seperate items.

At last a youtuber who really can blow over the tune at a fast tempo!
Man, you sound great!

I'd be honored if you'd take a look at my vids, there are a few solo guitar clips on my channel where I practise GS, and a few other tunes. Maybe you have some advice concerning my playing?
leidischd 2 years ago
Checked your clips...you're on the right track... 50s JG is a long slow road....keep swingin.....good-luck
NickPycks6 2 years ago
Thanks, it sure is a lot of work! Best wishes to you!
leidischd 2 years ago
Really impressive. I'm practising this tune for some time now, but at slower tempos, so I can appreciate the mastery in your playing. What's interesting is your different right hand technique compared to the slower version. I think it supports the even eights at this blazing speed without getting tired or tense, while making the sound a bit thinner.
leidischd 2 years ago
The so called Benson picking is still kicking my backside...I haven't surrenderd yet!!!!
NickPycks6 2 years ago
When I tried, it really sounded crappy and felt odd, but I'll spend some time practicing it.

I suppose gotta start slow 1st
gtrpimp76 2 years ago
flawFULL is more like it...after I trip the 2 half notes let me start running again....I've sent you a note reguarding your chromatics question.

Fantastic, Don! Nice tone. Fantastic flowing lines. Thanks for the inspiration! Tom

Nice job, Nick...great technique and a sense of humor to match it. Trying to read the headstock but is that a Benedetto? You're endorsing those - yes?
rrksevilla 2 years ago
No-it's an Eastman..a poor-man's Benedetto...I was added to the Eastman roster by the late Jim Fisch..an irreplaceable jazz guitar patron..missed by all who knew him
NickPycks6 2 years ago
I was thinking of getting an Eastman archtop. How do you compare it to a Benedetto?
rrksevilla 2 years ago
@NickPycks6 I forgot to give thanks to GORDON ROBERTS---a great english gentleman who was kind enough to introduce me to Jim Fisch..
NickPycks6 1 year ago
very clean riffs, awesome. As far as what lwoods was saying, I think its cool if you were trying to do a motif on it... but if youre doing it because you have trouble on those chords continuing your lines then id say keep trying to push through them. very nice though :)

Nice playing, great control, it's not an easy standard, even Coltrane repeated himself through all the takes!
forget the negative bullshit, I loved it, please keep on playing and posting

keep doing your thing just because iwoods can explain what you're doing doesn't make it sound any less good

Can you play one of birds' tune?

You keep playing that same little phrase when you slow down. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
