  • @oldfriend He was white, therefor no athletic ability. I could show you a video of Kobe with white face and you'd say the same thing. Dang, the white-guy-try-hard-but-no-athleticism routine gets SO OLD! It's just lazy commentary for one...

  • "Oh... OOOHHH... didn't work..."

  • press 3 repeatedly to see larry birds dancing

  • Who's Larry bird???

  • Who's Larry bird? How did I get here fuckin YouTube

  • man i wish i couldve seen these games in real life and how it looked

  • Comment removed

  • @Flipper79able Wow, talk about over analyzing shit. Calm down dude dang.

  • I'm aware of the likes of Bob Cousy, Jerry West, Rick Barry, and John Havlicek being great clutch artists in their day. But my previous post is about white players from the 1980's to Present Timeline. Again, outside Dirk and Bird, not another comes close in terms of personal Game Winners as these two.

  • Dirk is no Bird, but he comes as close in terms of GAME WINNERS. I think Bird made about 15-20 Game Winners in his career. Well, I've been following Dirk progress for the past 12 years, and he's made 13 Game Winners (12 NBA, 1 International) at this point. Just among white players, I can't think of another one with that many personal Game Winning shots outside Nowitzki and Bird.... in the last 30 years or so.

Just my 2 cents in the end.

  • Why does everybody look tall and skinny?

  • @FuNDuHM3NTAL:

Because athletes in the early 80's WERE skinnier than modern athletes, in large part because they didn't have the sophisticated weight training regimens that players use today. In fact basketball players were once thought to AVOID weight training as it was feared it would mess up their shot. Of course people in general were skinnier as people didn't eat nearly as much garbage, usually got more exercise, and portion sizes were generally much smaller than today.

  • @zyxwut321 The players weren't necessarily skinnier back then, it's the uniforms that make it look that way. Players now almost as a rule lift weights where as they didn't so much back then but look at players stats from back then to today. Players today are about the same size and weight as they were back then, with little exception. It's the short shorts and tiny uniforms that make them look skinny.

  • @Flipper79able:

That's not necessarily true. You didn't have muscular 270+ pound guys like Lebron back in the early 80's. Kobe has also gotten far bigger and stronger over the course of his career. Probably the best example of the change in body types over the generations is Jordan who started off his career about 185 lbs soaking wet, bulked up past 200 lbs after getting manhandled by the Pistons and ended it a muscular 225-230 lbs or so at the end of his career with the Wizards.

  • @zyxwut321 Whatever you say. People were weight training back then too...not as much. I think weight training can make you gain 15 to 20 pounds at the most. I stress AT THE MOST for these guys....after all they are not weight training all day like body builders. I guess it's a matter of opinion but in MY OPINION players have not evolved that much in 20 or 25 years. Their uniforms make them look skinny.

  • @Flipper79able P.S.- By the way LeBron is not 270. I admit LeBron is one of the bigger guys in the league but look at former players like Moses Malone or Hakeem. Trust me human evolution will not allow that big of a change in that short of a time span. Players are not lifting that much weights. Just my opinion though.

  • Larry was the most virile Celtic of all.

  • Larry Legend - Greatest Caucasion to ever play the greatest sport on the planet

  • the difference between DN41 and larry? they both woulda made the 4 point play, but only bird coulda made that pass. love dirk, love bird even more.

  • bird is my all time fave player... nowitzki who? get outta here...

  • @JamesMeyers1996 he's already the best in my opinion. certainly if i had the choice to build my team around any one player in history it would be bird; yes, even over jordan.

  • @oldfrend I totally agree.

  • never saw the foul, but well done larry! :)

  • awesome

  • @maplestoryisthebestr i always forget hes on Boston lol but yeah he's a great player too.

  • Only celtics player I'll ever respect.

  • @BlackSolo11891 If he's your man learn how to spell his name it's Dirk Nowitzki. Did you ever see the crooked finger Larry Bird played with? Do a search on YouTube for

    When the game was ours

It's a 1 hour video about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

How good would Dirk be with a finger as bad as Larry's on his shooting hand?

  • Thumbs up if ur watchin this in 2011!!

  • Larry bird is truly a great player. He played for passion and love of the game, unlike most of the players in the NBA today. I miss these days of basketball. Now people mainly play for fame and fortune & some of todays players consider a hang nail an "injury"

  • 3 pointaaa !

  • 3 pointaaa !

  • Do we have to see "Nowitski" comments on Bird's videos...pls, he's a shooter- straight up...not a playmaker, not an assist man, not ever diving out of bounds ...he's not even in the two 20 all time... One ring and being white doesn't make you comparable to Larry Bird.

  • @yourbudjerry Nowizky is a big man dumbass, how it would be a "assist man"?

  • Where are Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in this game? Is Bob Cousy the coach? Thumb down because of the wrong tagging.

  • @dralger What are you talking about? This is a Celtics vs Knicks preseason game. Why would Michael Jordan and Kareem be there?

  • @lasoogneypubes

Look on the tags of this video.

  • @dralger Who gives a shit about the tags? You're the only one looking at them. Thumbs down for you good sir.

  • thers no three point line.????

  • @larvenNIGGA There definitely is, just low quality video decieves you.

  • larry legend was undoubtedly the smartest player i've ever seen. if he had MJ's or lebron's athletic ability, he might have averaged a triple double for his career.

  • @oldfrend I heard a quote in Larry's book "Drive". Larry said something to the effect of "I think people make too big a deal out of triple doubles.... if that's all anybody wanted me to do.....I believe I would get 30 or 40 a year......how many games we won while I was trying to do this is another question.....and winning the ball game is really the only thing I'm after".

  • @Flipper79able not sure what you're trying to say, but i feel getting a triple double is a huge factor in winning games. i haven't done the research, but i'll bet there's a MASSIVE correlation between triple doubles and wins. points per game i think is overrated, but conversely i think RPGs and especially APGs are very underrated, especially for bird who never got cheap dimes off pick-n-roll jumpers or as the primary ball carrier.

  • @oldfrend See this is what separates the the casual basketball fan from the basketball guru. When some basketball players get too focused on individual stats they lose track of what's really needed. Let's say there were a couple of Celtics during a game that were hot on scoring..that means Larry doesn't need to go crazy scoring to take away from the other guys streak and can concentrate on rebounding and assists or visversa. Most great players know great individual stats doesn't mean games won.

  • @oldfrend With more athleticism he might have been a completely different player, hard to say.

  • @oldfrend:

If he had MJ's or Lebron's athletic ability then he wouldn't have HAD to use his smarts and probably wouldn't have worked as hard to develop his skills. Most of us, even the best, work only hard enough to get what we want, not so hard as to see how far we can go.

  • @oldfrend He absolutely would have averaged a triple double if he had even HALF of Lebrons athletcsm...It would be flat out unfair & ridiculous

  • Nowitzki makes this game very similar and also how to pull the ball in the basket

  • Actually a great pass from Bird here also.

  • Whoa, I see them double, I must be drunk

  • Cont: I think if you have a team with really bad teammates - like a Lebron / Cavs situation, or a team that plays a lot of post up ball, like the Grizzlies, Spurs or Magic, you go Bird, if you have a team with a lot of solid, athletic players - like the current Nuggets, you go Magic - he would make Chandler, Galinari and Hilario all stars with his passing. I can't even imagine what the current Heat would do with Magic running the show - 82 - 0

  • @prtynacan Bird was a sensational playmaker, particularly in the half court, and was arguably Magic's equal in that department. He just had the ball in his hands less. Magic was of course a phenom in transition. As for improving your teammates, the Celtics improved by 32 games simply by adding a rookie Bird to what was previously a basement-dwelling team.

  • Well I'm not surprised at that...these some of these current NBA players are a joke. Like LeBron or Carmelo Anthony.

  • That`s absolutelly true reno93535. People tend to argue that today players would destroy the 80`s and 90`s teams. Its not the speed of the player that counts here nor the the thousand ways that he can dunk. Its the team play, chemistry, knowledge of the game. For instance Jordan was an incredible athlete but the Celtics won easily. If you have a great passing ball team like the Celtics and Lakers of the 80`s you can put 5 streetballers against them the result would be a blowout for the Celts.

  • all the black boys love to showboat that is why the european players will take it over b cause of discipline

  • @belloni890 European players with their consistant flopping are killing the game of basketball

  • @Marakulous43 European teams have been beating the U.S. teams in world championships in recent years. What flopping?

  • @belloni890 But I do agree with the showboating nonsense.

  • @belloni890 Not just dicipline. Smarts are involved in why Eurpoean teams have beaten more athletic U.S. teams in recent World championships. IQ is a factor.

  • There`s no player in the NBA today close to Bird`s greatness. Kids today think the game is more difficult because the players are more athletic. Well today`s basketball its street-basketball. Back in the 80`s the game was a men`s game the ball would fly from hand to hand to the basket in 2 or 3 touches. The defenses wouldn`t allow easy baskets, hand-checking was legal and the game was played like it was intended to be played: T-E-A-M play. Today`s players just jump and dunk, no fundamentals.

  • @mikjord Today's players are more athletic and suck fundamentally. They are poorer shooters, and team players. That is why less athletic, smarter European teams beat them in recent world championships.

  • @mikjord naw game was more brutal back then if you watch the games less fouls called and back then there werent all this new rules especially the one about screaming after a foul and getting a technical because its considered going against the ref.....

  • God: "You have just one life. You can waste your time by going to the gym, havin' a great body, doin' some spectacular dunks, being selfish, shooting the ball 40-50 times a game...or you can practice on the court the same time, hustlin', shootin', having a great time and becomin' the best team player in the world. Choose, Larry."

  • 0:08 ... wtf was that? this is the nba

  • @pacboy24 ahhahahahhahahhahahahahahah!

  • I love how the announcers call it a "heave". Anybody who knows anything about Bird knows that everything he did was purposeful and calculated. He leaned in to take the foul because he knew the shot was going in.

  • the only player i can think of right now that still aims for this these days is, or was, t-mac

  • nobody talks about his sick pass in the beginning which didnt turn in to an assist because his teammate missed an easy layup. his vision on the court is sick.

  • Bird made it look easy

  • You know how people like Kobe they say he is the best, well Larry Bird is better than him, and by the way Kobe doesn't know how to play fundamental basketball all he does is runs the ball and jock all the time!

  • @miguelbaezjr i agree larry bird is amazing. but for you to say that kobe is not fundamentally sound is absord and ignorant of you to say. kobe does not win the titles hes has, average 25 points in his career and pretty much mimic alot of the moves micheal jordan has done. its unfair for yu to say all that.

  • @miguelbaezjr You don't know what your talking about. "fundamental basketball" is code for white boys who are not athletic. lets be honest. btw Kobe is a better player than bird, hell Magic was a better player than bird.

  • @Tonyokay87 How the fuck is Kobe a better player than Bird? Bird has better carreer FG% shooting, 3pt FG%, rebound per game average, assist per game average, blocks per game average, and more MVP's then Kobe. Bird had better carreer stats than Magic. What are you basing your comments on? You're the one that doesn't know what they're talking about. Back up what you're saying.

  • @Tonyokay87 Your comment is racist. There are no "white boys" in the NBA or European league. They are no more, "white boys", then the NBA players are "black boys". Fundamental basketball isn't code for racist. Less athletic "White boy" Euro teams have beaten more athletic "Black boy" NBA teams because thay ARE better fundamentally. They sure aren't beating them on speed or leaping ability, genius.

  • @Tonyokay87 Magic didn't have a jump shot and was just an ok FT% shooter...The lakers were overall (except for '86) better than the Celtics. But Bird was better than Magic. I've got the argument to back that up. As far as kobe...LMFAO Seriously? Kobe is great, but kobe doesn't have the I.Q. (when to pass or shoot) as MJ, Magic, Bird. Kobe shoots for 25.4ppg at 48%, 5apg, 6rpgat to birds 24.3ppg at 50% 7apg, 10rpg...with bird having more blocks, steals FT%, 3pt%.. shit, I just ran out of stats.

  • @usnate1 - I think you should check Magic's FT% stats - shot 80-90% most of his career

  • @prtynacan Magic career FT% is 85% rounded up...Bird's is 89% thats about 180 free throws a year average made. Magic had a FG% of 52% to Bird's 50%(Bird's IS more impressive, b/c he shot 5,000 career fewer shots than Bird...8,000 fewer shots than MJ.) Magic best PG all time. But magic had a monster team to pass to (counting starters and bench) they made him look better. His teams were even better as a whole than bird or MJ. Magic still did not have a jumpshot comparable to the other 2.

  • @prtynacan Continued: Thats why I liked Bird so much...he was a mix of the best of MJ and Magic.Magic's triple double count doesn't carry that much weight, b/c many of those were what is called "back door triple doubles" Meaning he'd have 14 points 13 apg, 10 rpg. Oscar Robertson's carried with it 20+ points a night. I mean Jason Kidd is 3rd all time in triple doubles but I'd still take Bird or MJ, wouldn't you? MJ, Bird, Oscar, Magic in that order for me. Judging all around play & impact ,era

  • @usnate1 It's a toss up for me between Bird and Magic - it's a debate that will forever go on. I gotta disagree with the triple doubles thing - he averaged close to 20 a night for his career. Also - don't forget his versatility - the man played center in the NBA finals - and completely dominated the game - doubtful that Bird or Jordan could do that. Who you go with really depends on the team surroundings - Magic makes his teammates better than Bird did - Bird is a better individual scorer.

  • Pound for pound, GOAT.Give him Jordans athleticism and its SCARY.

  • haha, listen to the difference between the sports announcers back then and how much higher the expectations of nba players are now.

  • I taught Larry Bird this move.....

  • Nice vintage Bird

  • from the 82-83 season I guess because ed sherod played for the knicks in that year

  • Outstanding shot.
