They called the band Matchbox 20 because Rob was on the dating game "Matchbox" many years ago. Rob said during the TV show that he wanted to be matched up with 20 women. :)

from what i remember the name 'matchbox 20' is becos one day,rob wanted to smoke while thinking of the band name,he opened the matchbox and 20 matchstick were inside it. Thats how the name matchbox 20 was founded :)
