I lived in Auckland in the mid 70's and the drums you see Maurice Greer playing I actually bought from him in 1972 or 1973. The Bass Drums were heavier than most kits, had been extended and had projection like they were miked twice. Would have loved to have had Glenny Pigg from Space Farm and the UnderDogs play on them. He had the most powerful kick abilities I had ever seen on a drummer at that young age. Both he and Maurice were major NZ Legends.
Forgot about Rick, he was a really good drummer as well...and the buy with the 15$ Thai sticks was hanging with the wrong crowd...paid way too much lol
Yeah you're right about hanging out with the wrong crowd what is your background if you don't mind my asking you seem to know heaps about the scene back then.
I remember seeing Maurice & Billy TK at Granny's Night Club in the 60s?? Black Sally if I can remember rightly was "Sally" who we used to hang about with and smuggle in drinks. Remember them before their trip to London at the Platter Rack in Durham St, Auck? (as the Four Fours/)
Does anyone remember them playing at Bo Beep nightclub in Auckland memory might be a little hazy here how about Levis nightclub near the Britomart carpark,Ticket were resident band Dragon also played there
I first got introduced to Human Instinct a month or two ago. I wish I had heard them years ago. Funny how they are hardly mentioned in the circles of kiwi music. I had a hard time getting hold of the Stoned Guitar album. I found it eventually in Wellington. The weird thing was it was sold as a Dutch import!!
I could probably do it with my video camera shooting the disc spinning around but the sound quality would not be great in comparison to a direct transfer of vinyl to cd then mp3. Do you want me to try it that way?
Definitely not just a remix. It sounds very different too and why shouldn't it. The album it was on "stoned guitar" was released on Allied International in 1970. The single was on the Pye label and rel in 1971, so that should clear up any doubt or arguments about it and no, the single definitley has only 1 solo on there as I said before but the solo is longer than any on the lp and more crazy/out there IMO making it a better version, also, in my humble opinion.
Hey Maurice Greer; were there two recorded versions of "Black Sally" I remember buying the single and then buying the album Stoned Guitar. I f my senses serve me well, then I noticed a distinct difference in the both tracks. I actually thought the single sounded better. Correct me if I'm wrong. I was only 15 yrs old then, 38 yrs ago.
You're correct. The single is 2 minutes shorter. It has 1 guitar solo, not 2 like the lp version. The solos are different to each other and I like the 7 inch version better.
Cheers! I must have had a good ear for music back then huh to have picked that out. That's interesting that you like the 7 inch version better. I always thought the bass on the single had a better tone. Either way both dynamic tracks. Mr fearandconsumption are you Mr Greer? Railway and Gunn.
You had a good ear to pick it out, yes! I am not Mr. Greer. I am a record collector who lives in Australia. I have the single in question in my possession. It has a cool looking picture sleeve too.
Is the single version of "Black Sally" and the album version two separate studio recordings of the song or is the single just a remix of the album track? From memory I think the single had a second guitar part in there.
cool, have been looking on the net for bands like H.I., Brown Street, the In Betweens etc for ages, I used to go to Shantytown under the civic theatre (owned by John Tabla I think) in the 70's to see these guys most weekends, Maurice always took the time to say hello even though he didn't know us. Times were different then, hot licks, hot chicks and buddha sticks yee haa
Oh i remember them Buddha Sticks thick as, on a kebab stick about $15 bucks .I posted a comment on NZ music 60's & 70's about Shanty Town and Mainstreet no one replied it was like nobody went there. The Inbetweens were a great band then i remember getting kicked out for falling asleep on the table heck it was 4 in the morning.
Played at Shantytown and Gatsbys with a band called Alexis....became good friends with The inbetweens and ended up playing in Australia with Inbetweens singer Tony Rabbett.....Great days - anyone know what happened to johnny Tabla?
I need the album "Stoned Guitar" on cd. I just love this album. Were there two different versions of "Black Sally"? The one on the 45 sounded different than the version on album.
Oh yes remeber them well in 1968 the Place one of the Top night clubs n Auckland The Galaxie with other top Artists to like the Underdogs...Action...Leo DeCastro...The La De Das...Le Frame Larrys Rebels .Wellingtons. Pleasures n also Larrys Rebels...other night clubs in the vicinty of auckland were ...The Top 20 ...The Platter Rack ...MoJo,s...other Bands by memorie to were Blues Band...Silvester Winch Style...Martin Winch on vocals
Man that Cat could sing in dance side ways on Stage.
"forced"! what forced? you needed a new kit - well a replacement one, since an extremely mandied stripper fell offa a platform onto yer old kit (see thru plastic)shatterin it at some free festival gig.
I didn't know the damn bass drums were made outta pipe or some-such. Everything was painted matt black n u couldn't see it was a bit daggy at night in a dimly lit club.
what's with the names veryTony? Am I gonna be the only person denied a nom ge guerre when discussing the 70's.
Sinclair you dog, I forgot I even posted this much less you were going to have an attack of nostaglia...I can blame most of my youthful indicretions directly at you....especially that picture in the paper of you, me and Jan celebrating our latest business venture at the BullRing Restaurant.
Amazing! The opening sequence shows a double bass drumset with Maurice playing them standing up...I bought those drums from Maurice at Cook Street Market back in 1971...my Auckland U. buddy Phil Sinclair turned me on to Human Instinct and Billy TK and forced me to buy those monster drums!
ese guitarrista es muy bueno. facil de comparar con otros grandes guitarristas: jimy hendrix, page, malmsteen, blackmore de la epoca
