The similarities between Afghanistan and Vietnam are astounding. Maybe not in the intensity of combat or the level of commitment but definitely the same in the type of enemy and geographical challenges. I did my tour in Iraq and said "screw this noise", my hats are off to you boys in Afghanistan, that's a whole different animal that I wouldn't want to tangle with.

Problem with COIN is that soldiers are only supposed to do fighting and helping with physical rebuilding of buildings and roads. It's the job of governments and diplomats to lessen the political and social problems that cause terrorism to thrive. It's like fighting a gang war. Is attempting to arrest every gangster really the best strategy? Short term, yes. For eliminating terrorism? no. Politicians and government must improve people's lives to stop all this. As for a grasp on the situation in the Pacific theatre near the end, read "Tennozan: The Battle of Okinawa and the Atomic Bomb'. It will shed some light on why the mind-blowing decision to drop the bomb was made. It's a good read and explores both side's position. I have studied the Eastern Front extensively, the Pacific was our war of annihilation. War is shit by definition, yet it is part of the human condition.
