@goldenscales Actually with a little effort you would be surprised how accesible the original languages are. You don't have to be a scholar or go to seminary. If you have a passion for the word then you can learn. Take New Testament Koine Greek for example. I promise with Mounce "Basics of Biblical Greek" (on Amazon) and the workbook, you can pick up Greek in a short time. Not to mention it will help your English since about 40% of English is derived from Greek. Always be a student.

I don't think Judaeo-Christianity is sun worship. They may have spoken and written in the language of contemporary religious ideas ("paganism"), and these "pagan" ideas undoubtedly went all the way back to Sumerian and Egyptian astrology, but pagans also invented temples and priesthoods and offerings. The Passover of the Bible refers to the Spirit of God which passed over those who had followed his commands and painted blood over their doors so that their firstborns are not killed.
Also, back then, the slaves had no life but bricks. Bricks were their life value. The Passover served as a reminder to the Israelites that their lives were not bricks, but a relationship with God.
Honestly, if you want to talk about these things, read it in the ACTUAL language it was originally written in.

@goldenscales Actually with a little effort you would be surprised how accesible the original languages are. You don't have to be a scholar or go to seminary. If you have a passion for the word then you can learn. Take New Testament Koine Greek for example. I promise with Mounce "Basics of Biblical Greek" (on Amazon) and the workbook, you can pick up Greek in a short time. Not to mention it will help your English since about 40% of English is derived from Greek. Always be a student.

Very good. Not sure that "passover" is a sun related idea, certainly not in Judaism. Means more than a Greek notion of astronomical movements and is about liberation of identity. Its presented well and an interesting idea, shame its just incorrect though. Still good effort.

@ThaDopist They don't know when Jesus was born. Somewhere I'd read it might have been in Spring. It really doesn't seem important. I mentioned it in my comment because that is the time assigned and the speaker was alluding to the 25th being about death and resurrection.

@Paahau i hear ya. this guy isn't terribly astute, but i believe the basic ideas are correct...when the Roman government tried to quell the pagan holidays of the sun-gods, they had to use symbols and motives that would jibe with the existing traditions. So jesus was "born" when the sun is born. The three days in the grave in the gospels is a folk-reference stuck in because of memories of other hero stories. Stories about religious heroes were not meant to be taken as true...so borrowing was ok.

@Sveccha93 From what I've read the early church didn't hold Dec. 25th up as Jesus birthday, that it was 338AD before there was the first Christmas. So yeah that is symbolic, though Easter does jive with the Jewish celebration going on at the time Christ was crucified. 'Three days in the grave' I haven't heard anywhere of before. And I hear you, honestly, it's just there's so many videos out there making statements of literal concrete connections which aren't there at all. & I'm not a Christian.

Did they? In what terms? The christ prophecies are dealt with in just one of the gospels, stuff like "and he rode in on a donkey, to realise the prophecy" etc. etc. None of it happened in the other Gospels. Can't even get their stories straight. No such person existed, face it.

Even the so called "debunkers" are mostly christian biased. If they actually admit that there are pagan parallels, their religion is wrong. thus is the influence of political organization and religion. who really governs the people? the kings or the priest who comunicates with god? thus, the rulers, jealous of the clerics power over the masses, have often tried to influence and abuse religion to govern the masses. religion is made for communication between man and the divine. however, it wasnt always used for just that purpose.

This is a misinterpretation of ancient religions. All of them believed in one ultimate all powerful god, from other deities gained their power. In the same way, Saints the evil, prophets etc. in judaism and christianity are worshipped, these gods were worshipped. Did you ever kneel and pray to Mother Mary? I dont understand why Christians have a need to beleive that they are the first to have these views? Do you think it will all dissapear if it happens to be older than Jesus?

Monotheism was one of the differences, but many similarities in belief about afterlife, judgment, moral code were all there. And guess what, Moses came out of Egypt, remember the Exodus? Yeah, that's where he learned all about Egyptian law and religion, then started his own religion. But as I stated before, there's even older religious codes predating everything Egyptian let alone Hebrew.

And it's common knowledge that Egyptians mummified their dead to aid in overcoming obstacles in the after world. There's even the Code of Hammurabi, an ancient rule book made by King Hammurabi who believed God told him to set rules for his people to live by. That was waaay back in the 21st century BC beating out Moses and the OT by 700 years!

It's not even that Jesus is a sun God like Horus, but that things like the Ten Commandments, concept of an afterlife, judgment, holy communion, etc. were already existing ideas and philosophies in the Book of the Dead. The Old Testament wasn't even written until about 12 BC. Do you know how many religious books were out before then with similar ideas? The Old Testament is really a book that jumped on the bandwagon. And the New Testament stemmed from their. How do you refute this?

I don't think Judaeo-Christianity is sun worship. They may have spoken and written in the language of contemporary religious ideas ("paganism"), and these "pagan" ideas undoubtedly went all the way back to Sumerian and Egyptian astrology, but pagans also invented temples and priesthoods and offerings. I doubt most people would say Christians are just pagans or sun worshipers just because of these things. Anyway, the connection between religion and ancient observations of the sky is fascinating.
