Kudos to you for actually playing these CD-i. I wouldn't manage. The games are not only a disgrace to the Zelda series, NOT ONLY a disgrace to Nintendo, but they're a disgrace to the gaming world as a whole.
what are these red jelly things saying on 5:01? does any zelda guru know if that's an actual enemy in the series or something they made up, the gwatna?
Hmm. I thought this game would actually be WORSE. I never got a chance to play it... Or even if I did, I probably wouldn't have any way, considering how atrocious the first two were :/
I don't know why but despite the flaws,Zelda's adventure is something I would play and enjoy back then.Maybe now too I dunno. But perhaps it's just me...XD
They weren't allowed to use Hyrule. Nintendo only allowed Phlips to use 5 Nintendo characters as a part of them changing their minds on the CD add on to the SNES...Zelda, Link, and Ganon being 3 of them. This is why only the 3 main unique elements of Zelda were carried over to these titles.
Gasp, a Zelda game on the CD-i that...actually plays like a normal Zelda game!
Seriously, though, I wonder if someone will try to hack Zelda 1 or Zelda 3 (LTTP) and try to recreate Zelda's Adventure as a classic Zelda adventure. That would be one well-deserved fate for this game.
Sure, it was a tragedy, but I bet you could hack into the game and improve it. As you said, the game (or more specifically, the engine) could use a bit of work. Also, maybe you could edit the maps to things would stand out a bit more. Maybe you could also re-record the voice acting, but unless you know what you're doing, you should probably just leave it alone.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fix the lag. It's possible that it's a result of the CD-I's limitations.
@TheDevilbuster Or maybe, as he suggested, cut out the voice acting entirely and replace it with text. As for the lag...I honestly don't know either, but I think the way they did the graphics had at least something to do with it.
@ZoombiniChan Replacing the voice acting with text probably would be best. I don't really think the graphics, atrocious as they were, were the cause of the lag, but rather the system itself. For example, the CD-I couldn't handle Mode 7, whereas the Super Nintendo could.
More to the point, the CD-I was never meant to be a video game console, let alone run action/rpg games, such as this.
Although it would be weird to have text playing over live-action. Maybe leave the cutscenes as is but put text for talking NPCs encountered in the actual game. Or redo the cutscenes. But I'd miss Gaspra as he's shown :(
...adapt the game to a system with better capabilities? *doesn't know how that works*
@ZoombiniChan Now that I think about it, that Mode 7 comment was pretty irrelevant...Well, maybe the CD-I did have the capabilities to run Zelda's Adventure smoothly; it was probably just executed poorly.
@TheDevilbuster I think they used a whole lot of filmed footage for the game also. I'm not sure how much bearing that would have on lag time though
I think I know what causes the lag time! Zelda's not excited about going to save the world as shown in the opening cutscene and so she's dawdling between screens. She doesn't want to die over and over like she knows happens to Link in other Zelda games a lot :O
Don't you think that in Hind-sight, If there were less controller problems for the other games, that (Apart from the cutscenes) they might not be so bad?
If anything, Zelda's adventure is the worst. I can see why they tried FMV, but it just looks horrible EVERYWHERE. and the loading times...Half Blind Gamer does a much more balanced reviews of the CD-I games TBH.
After hearing so much bad reviews for Zelda's Adventure, I'm surprised to hear someone say it was good. But alas, as you said "Philips wanted to show off".
A lot of people who say the games are crappy have most definitely never played them before in their lives - heck how could you have done it? The CD-I was so expensive when most of these people were growing up, they likely couldn't have afforded it - or even found it, for that matter. (I only knew of it because some kids won a CD-i on LEgends of the Hidden Temple)
@thee3nd Everyone complains about this game and we've all seen the unholy Tri-Force video of the Zelda CD-I games form The Angry Video Game Nerd but what gets me is that those people paid a lot of money for them, it's like buying a pettegree racehorse but instead of getting a horse the seller shoves your hand up the butt of the horse then steals your cash and horse leaving you broke and a hand full of horse crap. That's the same as paying too much for these games that should be $2.
Ah, the reason they never named the location Hyrule in any of the CD-i games is because Nintendo only gave Philips the character rights to the games. and even then only Link, Zelda and Ganon. (Mario, Luigi, The Princess and Bowser for Mario). So that's why Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom are mentioned.
Ok now I know what cdi is,its a discrace to Nintendo

I think the same as you do. This game feels like a GAME. It still does not pass a test, but it is more deserving of a 5/10 rather than a 2 or 3.

So I guess that if you gave a grade for all of the Legend of Zelda games that you've mentioned, I guess that you will do something that this:
The Legend of Zelda: S
The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past: S
Link: The Faces of Evil: F-
Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon: F-
Zelda's Adventure: D
Am I right?
