  • Prologue as narrated by voiceover John Michie:

"The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Japan, is the world's longest suspension bridge. It spans a water weight four kilometres wide, and it's designed to withstand powerful typhoons, tsunami(s), and earthquakes. It is the pinnacle of bridge engineering. The Akashi Bridge owes its success to seven key inventions, found in these seven landmarked bridges.

  • At the heart of each bridge, lies a major technological innovation that allowed engineers to span ever wider chasms. One by one, travelling up the scale, we'll reveal the incredible stories behind these structures, and the inventions that allowed them to grow ever longer. Seven ingenious leaps forward that enabled bridges to evolve, from Big, to Bigger, into the world's BIGGEST!"

  • It's the longest @ 4 km? The Mackinaw bridge in Michigan is 8km long....check it out.

  • @foneill9 it means main structure not approaching

  • @kaitoukidkun Yeah..the Mackinaw bridge spans a stretch of water that is 8km wide, with approaches on-shore...Are they only counting the span BETWEEN the towers, and if so, why?

  • @foneill9 I think they are counting the main span between the towers and sometimes will include the span between towers and anchor points because that is where the biggest span is.

  • @kaitoukidkun OK...I just would have thought that a bridges length would be it's total length, not just the length of the central section...oh, well

  • impressive bridge

  • where's the next part?
