  • One of the most atmospheric horror films of the 70's and a great lesson on using the power of suggestion to scare an audience.

  • This movie is PG??

  • Great horror flick!!....even if people did party a bit too much back then... ; )

  • I think there take on the supernatural is mire likely then any other ive heard...

  • I think their take on the supernatural is probably more likely then any other ive heard...

  • Really good & climatic movie

  • *Spoilers* The movie was about fear, death, and courage in that order. That's why I liked it so much. There were four characters in the movie, but it was all about Roddy McDowell's character. He shut himself off in the previous investigation, and survived it. In the second investigation, two more died, and he then had to figure it out disregarding his own possible death. He was in the backround for the first two thirds of the film, and then was the key at the end. That was brilliant scripting.

  • Scored this one on dvd some yrs back...noticed the cable stations have it in steady rotation lately. Excellent stuff. For the young who may be just discovering this one, also look for The Haunting (1963), and The Innocents (1961) ... you won't be disappointed.

  • this film had such a lame ending.

Roddy: "What? Five foot two? Five foot one? Wait, I know, not even 5 foot tall!"

    Ghost: "Ahhhhh!" *dies

  • I read this book a few months ago, it was really good and disturbing. Just found the movie trailer for it and am thinking about seeing the movie. (:

    I'm excited.

  • PG, huh? Hmm... They got away with a lot back then, didn't they? Or have we just become to Puritanical these days? :oP Mostly kidding.

  • Probably one of the most underrated and scariest horrors I have ever seen. However, I wouldn't put it on if my kitten was in the room as she might get possessed PMSL. Seriously, though, do try this film.

  • It looks quite interesting for an old movie. I should give it a try. :)

Feels a bit like the mad twin of Hill House... mmh... wait, that doesn't make sense. Hill House isn't that nice either. The more violent twin? Mad twin... uh... help?

  • I loved this film, it's fucking terrifying. Although, PG? It may be much more tame than the book but I wouldn't show this to a 10 year old kid.

  • i just saw this movie 20 minutes ago!

    it was EPIC! lol

  • This Film seems to be older than 1971 may be in 1957

  • "Peter Vincent: The Early Years"

  • i don't really get scared by horror films but this stood out for me...

  • "if it had ended, we would not be here"

    epic quote is epic

  • richard matheson wrote the book as well as i am legend, he is the reason stephen king has a carrer as writer.

  • @animalmother16 no. i think the reason stephen king has a career as a writer is because he is a freak of nature who can not, will not ever stop writing. even after he's dead (if that is a possibility) there will be tales and stories told by him from beyond the grave.

  • My all time favorite movie quote

"Drug addiction, alcoholism, sadism, beastiality, mutilation, murder, vampirism, necrophilia, cannibalism, not to mention a gamut of sexual goodies."

  • @YTCENS0R same as congress really

  • FIRST STEP: Stop at 0:03

SECOND STEP: Look the girl at the right

THIRD STEP: You found Alessa Gillespie in real life!!

    =)

  • That is one pissed off pussy!

  • One of the best haunted house films ever made.

  • @waxartist72

A great British horror that is often overlooked these days. A shame Pamela Franklin's career ground to a halt after this.

  • :38 to 1:01 is NOT a successful dinner party!

  • @LivingMindfully1975 damn that meat looked good too. What a shame.

  • boring B-movie with stupid ending

  • @Sefco26 Obviously you don't know what a B movie is.

  • DERP @ 1:04

  • Molto bello, ottima atmosfera

  • @jannalli hahahahhahhh LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol wow, it was rated PG? Hell yes the 70s.

  • 1:00 yeah that's the way I feel about Justin Bieber

  • This ghost is pissed cause he was short.

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • A truly terrifying and very underrated horror from the British golden era of horror in the early seventies.

  • This will always be my favorite horror film! It wasn't saturated like todays movies with blood, and gore ..... It was that unseen force, like the one that makes the hair on your arm stand up, or that cold wisp of air on the back of your neck kind of scare!

  • 1:02-1:22 That was my reaction when i first heard/saw Justin Bieber.

  • The book's damned good too.

  • A very disturbing and dark film, Emeric Berlasco was loosely based on Aleister Crowley.

  • I saw this on Tyne Tees when they had a series of horror films in the early eighties on Friday nights.

  • Fuck all of y'all crackers

  • BEST FILM BY EVER HAUNTING HOUSE SPIRIT WITH THE HAUNTING 1963.

  • I'm scared to watch this movie. I have to know what happens beforehand so that it won't give me nightmares!! haha. I just want to watch it because Roddy is in it. :)

  • Defenseman619 I found your mom in a hotel room with Charlie Sheen's elbow in her twat. Now go suck a doorknob homo.

  • The scariest movie ever.

  • PG

    really?

    PG

  • @666lilnickY People were a lot more relaxed back then. They used to show breasts and blood in PG movies even in the 80s. We can't even get those things in PG-13 now.

  • @buddablz there wasnt a pg13 yet in the 80s correct? =o

  • @TVindustries5000 Yeah, it didn't come around until the mid-80s after 1984. Spielberg's Temple of Doom changed the rating system due to the level of violence for a PG film.

  • just looks like a stupid booby trapped house. horror movies of the past are just hilarious!

  • 0:38 - dinner at my brother in laws house.

  • I literally got chills from watching this trailer! I bought the book the other day :)

  • Wath a lot a of crap... --'

  • @jannalli

Actually 2:05... This was about my last taxi bill reaction.

  • R.I.P. Roddy McDowall.

  • The trailer for Edgar Wright's 'Don't' borrows heavily from this.

  • If you read the book, you will be a little bit disaspointed in the film. It follows the book pretty closy but the book it WAY,WAY better. Way more XXX Rated.

  • this preview doesnt do it justice yhis movie is really scary!

  • Sadism, mutilation? On second thought that is a date with OJ Simpson!

  • @jannalli hahaha

  • awesome movie

  • THIS IS PG?!?

  • @flyinmudman Think THAT'S obsurd or "off-the-wall?" Dracula Has Risen From The Grave is rated-get ready for this-"G!"

  • @AngelofAnguish Wow...Realy?

  • really, Cornelius???

  • If you're thinking of going into this house . . .DON'T!!!!

  • after mutilation he actually mention necrophilia, but I guess they censored it from the trailer....

  • excellent horror movie

  • Great horror film from a great decade.

  • I think Edgar Wright was inspired by it's atmosphere whe he made that fake trailer from grindhouse called "Don't"

  • this genius movie has been sampled alot by Skinny Puppy in their songs 'Basement','Love','Icebreaker','Double Cross',...

  • 0:18 some big areoli

  • hahaha i remember the cat from Scary Movie xD besides this movie looks good i like the 70's 80's and 90's horror movies cuz right now they just make remakes from them and some of them suck!

  • Pamela Franklin is fine as hell.

  • @jannalli

    LOL. Good one!

  • fantastic ghost story film.

  • This Reminds Me Of The Haunting

  • OMg ...I can't wait see him :X

  • Amiga Cláudia @bitch21witch.

    Lembra desse filme?

Quando eu assiti, era criança e não entendia de nada, por isso morria de medo.

Hoje dá para entender o que acontece: Mediunidade aflorada, provas e expiações!!!

    Grande abraço :D

  • There is nothing more scary than movies at this season.

    70's & 80's

The Best time of the U.K and U.S terror.

  • I just got done watching this film for the first time and I loved it! It was truly awesome. :)

  • wtf this is ratted pg?????????

  • GREAT FILM GREAT WHEELCHAIR!

  • I love the organ at the beginning, its like dunh dunh dunh

  • I watched it last night again for the time in over twenty years and still this movie is creepy. Can yall believe it's PG?!?! A very good haunted house movie. Right up there with the original "The Haunting", "The Changeling".

  • One of my most favourite British horror films.

  • パメラちゃん、エロイ。

  • Great trailer, but the film was disappointing. It has a good premise, but it just didn't follow through with some Grade A scares. (It also didn't help that Roddy's character kept saying stuff like "Are you?", "Do you", etc.)

There was a remake of this film ("The Haunting") done back in the '90's, and it was BAAAD. Avoid it at all costs.

Add to the 0:32 part, "...watching reality TV, writing "Facts of Life" fan fiction..."

  • @FiendsInRedSatin1 Actually "The Haunting" was a horrible remake of the fantastically classic "The Haunting" made in 1963. The original is probably THE CREEPIEST MOVIE EVER MADE! Not "scary", "creepy".

BTW, "The Legend of Hell House" still rocks, and Roddy McDowall was excellent in it!

  • Differences of opinion. I didn't care for the 1973 film. However, I think we both agree to stay away from the '90's "Haunting".

For the trophy for creep factor, I'd have to put the remake of "House on Haunted HIll" in the running for that prize. The atmosphere alone and the storyline made it a classic for me although the ending was a disappointment.

  • @FiendsInRedSatin1 I agree that "The House On Haunted Hill" (remake) WAS creepy. However, it was too much of a special effects fest for my taste.

The original 1963 version of "The Haunting" had ZERO special effects and still manages to be exceedingly creepy.

To each their own, I guess. :-)

  • I view special effects as a seasoning to make a good film better. However, just as adding too much seasoning can wreck a meal, relying too much on special effects can wreck a movie. I just wish film makers these days would get that through their heads.

  • @FiendsInRedSatin1 I couldn't agree more. Good "talking" with you.

  • Oh! Blow it out your afterburners! The Haunting kept me awake. And I tell horror stories for a liveing!

  • I honestly don't see how the 1990's "The Haunting" could make anyone sleepless.

  • "The Legend of Hell House" was based on the novel "Hell House" by Richard Matheson, author of "I Am Legend"(read the book and avoid the Will Smith version at all costs.) The 1999 version of "The Haunting" is based on the novel "The Haunting Of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. They are two completely different stories.

  • Great horror classic !

  • i red the book, but didnt see the movie, did they show the part were the statue of jesus rapes that girl at the end?

  • Nope....this movie came in 1973, and they weren't gonna show that onscreen then.

A remake is always possible, though.

  • Don't fake trailer was the first thing on my mind when I saw the first seconds of the trailer.

  • Don't read the last comment. Don't!

  • If you.....are thinking.....of going.....into.....this house.....DON'T!

    If you.....are thinking.....of opening.....this door.....DON'T!

    If you.....are thinking.....of checking out.....the basement.....DON'T!

DON'T LOOK BEHIND! DON'T LOOK IN THERE! DON'T LOOK UP! DON'T LOOK ANYWHERE! DON'T SCREAM FOR HELP! DON'T MOVE A MUSCLE! DON'T EVEN BREATHE!

    DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T!

If you are thinking of seeing this film alone.....DON'T! :P

  • @44excalibur Props on writting thr whole thing.

  • @ironman151 Thanks!

  • you became Roddy McDowel acting like a spastic?...LOL

    oh no Julesy!...lol

  • oohhhhhh help me x nick plese

  • LOL

    Nick to the rescue!!!

  • this is an awsome film!

  • Im skerred

  • Great classy, classic horror film. Great script, great acting.

  • Such a great film Pamela Franklin is brillant as usual. She is my favorite actor its a pity she doesnt act anymore

  • This movie was included in a 3 CD set of horror movies when I bought it last year at Halloween. I knew Roddy McDowall so I knew that the acting was going to be good. Now it is the only horror movie I watch that was made in the 70s.

  • can u upload it on youtube?

  • yeah this movie scared me pretty bad when i was a little kid. the girl's voice when she's possessed terrified me.

  • This is an excellent film. Pamela Franklin was the little girl Flora in the film, THE INNOCENTS. She is superb is this movie!

  • This is one hell of a good movie. Scared the heck out of me when I was a kid.

  • Hilarious trailer. I hope the movie is good.

  • All trailers before 1997-98 are a bit hilarrious, but that of course dosent mean the movie is too.

Just watch the haunting (1963) it's better than the new one (1999), even if it lacks of special effects, cinematic score or dramatic movement of the camera...

  • epic. bad trailer... but the movie scared the piss out of me since I was lttle. watching it now.

  • Can you upload the movie?

  • "If it had ended, we would not be here." - hilarious. Sheeeit- this just looks like one of the weekends at my house, especially during football and hockey season.

  • Drunk? Naked? Biting? Sounds like a date with Lindsay Lohan!

  • lmfao

  • LOL

  • hahahahaahahahah

  • @DA90027 Oh that's too funny!!

  • @DA90027 or your mom

  • One of my favoite movies ever...one of Roddy's finest performances

  • i loove pamela franklin

  • Fantastic film , loved the soundtrack which was written and performed by Delia Derbyshire and i still would love to get hold of it either on record or cd

  • Wow. Looks alot like Edgar Wrights 'DON'T' on the GRINDHOUSE trailers.

  • The similarity was no doubt intentional - although it is amusing that Wright's Grinhouse contribution is actually inspired by a high-class horror film, not a Grindhouse schlockfest.

  • I was about nine years old the first time I watched this old masterpiece of the exploitation horror and I still love it!!

  • 2:10 - 2:18 sounds like an orgy...

  • NIPPLES!!

  • It was a darn scary movie!

  • 1:21 he just wont DIE!!! lol

  • OH MY GOD!!!!BRITISH TEETH!!!!!

  • a lot of those things he said is just part and part of my daily life. lol

  • lol same

  • I remember watching the previews for this film on television when I was about 14,and to this day I still haven't seen it,might just look for it though next time I go to rent movies.

  • The house (exterior) featured in this film is the very eerie Wykehurst Place in West Sussex, unfortunately not visually shown to its best advantage in the movie.

  • It's a bit of a pity that nearly all the best bits of the film are in this trailer. Missing, though, is the wonderfully rumbly electronic soundtrack.

'Vampirism, necrophilia..not to mention a gamut of sexual goodies...'

    But those ARE sexual goodies!

  • far ahead of its time..scary, movie..Madmike..

  • love this film...top movie!

  • Definitely one of THE most scary movies i've ever seen! Too bad the trailer makes it look like a cheesy 70s flick. But it's not. It's really awesome. And i agree with pegleg747. Highly recomended

  • Matheson's book kept me up for nights!

This film always seems to rest within The Haunting's (Wise) shadow, however this is a very well done and scary film. Highly recommended!

  • i read a lot of horror stories but matheson's hell house is the only one the actually scare me as well.

  • Comment removed

  • dude it is absolutely mandatory that you read the book before seeing this...richard matheson knows how to write a good god damn story...the book also contributes to any sick fantasy or dream that you may want to some true...read it read it read it

  • The book this movie is based off by Richard Matheson is probably one of the scariest books I have ever read. Also, I was wondering if you all think Shirley Jackson's the Haunting of Hill House was scarier or not?

  • why does it sound like an orgy at the end?

  • it is ! a sweaty gang bang

  • read the book youll know why

  • Read the book.

  • Soulfrax88, excuse me but I believe I noticed the short bus pulling up to the curb for you. If you would like me to help you in, please don't hesitate to ask. And don't forget, drooling on the windows is acceptable, just remember to wear your helmet. Take care.

  • OK, a stupid question but, nonetheless, I would like to know. At the :18 second mark, does a nipple make its appearance or, is that just wishful thinking on my part? One of the reasons I ask is that, there wouldn't seem to be any purpose. Then again...

  • holy shit man that was a fuckin nipple go jerk off man i recommend it hahaha

  • It wasn't a nipple, just the dark bit around the area. Think it's called the Aurio, or something.

  • good book if anyone noticed it was written my Richard Matheson i suggest you read it its probably better than the movie but i will watch it after im done the book

  • The book was great...really twisted and sick at some parts, but great!

  • dude all of his books are amazing: I am Legend, Hell House, Stir of Echoes, The Shrinking Man, Hunted Past Reason...read all of it...

  • this movie is kinda crazy and bizzarish but I going to watch it when I find it lol XP looks fun

  • Now I know where the 'Dont' trailer was inspired from, among other films.

This looks like a fun classic.

  • One of the most incredible horror movies ever...one of the most bizarre scences is when they take the strange machine that's is going to "clean" the house!!!

  • lol @ 1:21 :D

  • its look he's doing ballet on his side or like immatating a fairy or smthing

  • Damn this looks like some crazy shit.

  • good movie!

  • Great movie!

Modern day "horror" movies are crap. They substitute cheap startles for real terror.

    This one was genuinely scary.

  • listen to the soundtrack...that alone scared the !@#$ out of me back when I first went to see the movie... I still think of it now and I'm 48 years old!!
