I second the comment how the developments with Iran Israel and the US are showing some shocking similarities to the fictional scenario leading up to the war in Threads. I was thinking about this a few days ago.
@unit23. Fair comment well presented. It's still a danger worth trying to avoid though isn't it?
Have you seem the cover of the economist this week? A very good article in it about the futility of bombing Iran to stop her getting nuclear capability. My point still remains though, we should at least try and avoid a conflagration between Israel and Iran, because that could lead to WW3 and you know it.
While watching this film, I couldn't help but notice, how the events leading to the nuclear strikes, are very similar to current events happening between the U.S., and Middle East today. This is frightening to say the least. Knowing what to expect, and how to prepare, would be crucial to survival durring, and after a nuclear attack. This film, as dismal as it is, contains a great wealth of information. I will share this film with everyone I know. Thanks many times over, for sharing this.
@BeGoneTrolls4evR yup the similaritys are staggering including how most of the nation is unaware of the danger. The danger of course being us and our hunger for nation stealing, destabilisation and just keeping us all scared. Watch the other films i posted, When the wind blows also showing the total futility of it all and Rollerball to see what the utopian vision of our corporate led government really has and is working towards.
@eurocon I definatly will watch When The Wind BIows etc. I have never seen, or heard of a lot of these movies. I guess because l was once consumed by the rat race, like most everyone else. It's was shocking to wake up, and realize how blind I really was for so many years. Mistrust of the mainstream media ignited the spark for me, as well as, the book 1984. Seeing that this movie aired in 1984, really sparked my interest in watching it. Thanks again
Most chilling film ever made. I used to work admin support on Trident and I remember feeling sick to my stomach every day I went to work knowing I was essentially supporting something that was an abomination. No country must have nukes, Not us, not the USA, China, Russia or anyone else. They must be dismantled now.
@Paganfuckingsexgod how will Mossad and CIA get into every single nuclear facility, it's not possible. Iran will get a nuclear weapon, deal with it. If the west tries to overthrow Iran it will probably lead to nuclear war like the movie says. Iran is too strategic for China and Russia to let the west control. It's a red line.
Didn't Ahmadinejad say on IRIB that he wanted to "wipe Israel off the face of the earth." and that Israel was a "disgraceful stain on the middle east" in his very wise "world without Zionism" speech.
Ahmadinejad is a nutter, who needs to be stopped getting nukes at all cost. Watch this film, relate it to now, change the players as Iran and Israel and shit yourselves.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Paganfuckingsexgod did you watch this film at all? Idiot. Invading Iran was the reason there was a nuclear war in the first place. Even if Iran got a nuke (which it can't since it doesnt have the skill or materials to make one) they wouldnt use it since they would only have 1 and they would be wiped out the moment they used it.
Invading Iran would cause political problems with other countries, like russia.
It's freezing outside, my central heating broke down and I had a little row with my husband. I'm watching this to remind myself that it could be a lot worse.
You're doing a big service posting this.. you have to worry if today's and future generations will lose track of how dangerous nuclear weapons are. Threads is an excellent depiction of how terrible they are.
Totally harrowing & depressing, but certainly made me feel entirely thankful for all that I have - even though I moan about my life on a day to day basis, I'll think twice next time!
I saw this on Seattle TV after it came out. It made "The Day After" look like a joke. I'd say the only US nuclear film that was comparable was "Testament", but "Threads" is more comprehensive. The irony in this plot is that in spite of the Soviet Union being dead, Iran right now is seen as the current nuclear threat. Anyway, thank you very much for putting this up, it's been 25 years since I last watched this. Still gut-wrenching to this day.
@SenorSpode: Well, actually it is still Russia. Iran is a nuclear threat only to Israel. But since both we and Soviet Union have stake in our respective sides of the middle East, what happens there is always waiting to spill out
@DChatc I agree; Russia's not what it use to be, but what little nukes they have left can certainly create hell. As far as Iran, they'd probably try and nuke anyone, since the rest of us are 'infidels'. And they're arrogant enough to do it, I believe.
there was an animation movie called"which way the wind blows" aired around the same time which was scary and moving aswell set during the run up to a neclear strike going off from an elderly coup;es perspective ..that was a sad a thought provoking movie aswell
@h1ppyjon yeah i agree..i got the title wrong its "when the wind blows" it on you tube ..i seen it when i was young and it woke me up to a few realites but was a good thing coming into my teens a bit more savy if you know what i mean ,,it got me into reading in a big way ,very important film for that time in my life,,and the word powerful is the best word to describe the movie ,its an peice of art well chosen
The retrospective view is that one day this will happen again. Iran is volatile and the uncertainties of the West is paramount in all of our minds ,as we don't have any cash. The present issues with our planet far out weigh the issues in which the problems in the 80's ever did. I can only hope that either 1. Strong leaders as Reagan, Thatcher or Gorbachev grace us or 2. We prepare for all out war! This is going to happen, really it is.
For the last 20 minutes of this film I just wanted it to end. Thought about just closing it. But I didn´t. I had to make it to the end. This should be mandatory viewing, especially for politicians.
This was filmed when people had work and had pride & self respect. Now there would be dirty scruffy chav's walking about with can's of cheap cider, Smoking lambert & Bulter cigs, Wearing Kappa shell suits, And 14 Year old girl's pushing a push-chair around. But DONT worry as David Cameron is going to fix everything.
Wow - massive grimfest. I swore to myself about 40 minutes in that I would immediately watch 19 episodes of 30 Rock right after this ended. Makes 1984 look like the Nutcracker Suite.
this film just shows us the horror of a nuclear war and how much would be destroyed simple facts like food would not be given out to people after the first few weeks after attack because that's when most people will die of effects/indirect effects, population would decline to medieval times, watch QED - a guide to Armageddon if you really want to have some sleepless nights
this was probably the most depressing thing i've seen.
I felt like shit after seeing it, then seeing that the girl who played Ruth's daughter died in a car crash sometime in the early 90s added insult to injury
I'm amazed on how destructive a nuclear war is. I think the worst part is the aftermath of the war, where there is little food, no medicine, electricity, and survival is key to living. I hope to goodness that a nuclear war will never happen, because that would be the worst decision ever made. Yet, we Americans did drop two atomic bombs on Japan, and still the aftermath was just horrible. Just think now the bombs are ten times bigger and it's the whole world being bombed.
@MountainDewVoltage44 The bombs are actually more than ten times bigger. The largest nuclear bomb ever detonated was the Tsar Bomba which had an explosive yield equivalent to over 3000 Hiroshima bombs. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were soley nuclear fission devices, but modern bombs utilise nuclear fusion and are called hydrogen bombs. They are hundreds of times more powerful. It's all rather depressing.
As an artist, this film confirms for me the limitless power of art; it's ability to seer the calloused soul of man and affect change when it is most desperately needed. As awful as conventional wars can be, they are immeasurably preferable to the nuclear reality presented in this film.
