When he says "broken my own word", my ear always hears it as an audio glitch, in both this, and the reg. vers. I always have the urge to go to the cd player and examine the cd for scratches.

There's a Michael Angelo Batio song that has a touch of Jimmy Page and a touch of Nick Kershaw. Doesn't swipe directly and is actually original, but at a quick listen it sounds similar in parts.(but someone else thinks it sounds like Classical Gas which it sounds nothing like)

@NolitaDenise You mention Page...LZ were the real robbers. The Stones always give credit to the blues masters they love. And Idol rocks :) He got the idea for "Rebel Yell" while partying with the Stones! Mick, Keith, and Ronnie were taking swigs from a 'Rebel Yell' bottle of bourbon whiskey.

It's a tough call, but thinking Mitch's is stripped down with a Mellencamp touch(big time, of course Mellencamp produced it, but still might as well be a Johnny Cougar track)

Problem is, outside of sampling, there's a whole bunch of stuff that's fair game. Chord progressions, scales...it's not what you use but how you use it, and this is a different song from Prince's and Mitch Ryder's.

I think it's just a couple of strokes(I'm pretty sure up strokes) on the guitar where they sound kind of alike, but they're not the same chords. Listened closely(this time on Prince's original) and they sound like minor chords on his.(and lower) On this one they sound like major chords(and higher) + it gets weirder cuz everything else makes this song sound sad but Prince's sounds happy.(tho the lyrics are sad, but words & not music)

Mitch Rider didn't copy it verbatim. However he did build on the bass and guitar big time and you don't need perfect pitch to hear it.

I like the demo of Catch My Fall better than the originally released version.(maybe something's wrong with me) This is timeless. When You Were Mine is classic but soooo dated. I think it's all the keyboards. Really meh if you're listening for anything besides the guitar, bass, and Prince's voice...so yeah Billy & Steve owe Mitch an ass kicking.

@soulkiss1001 - it's below the surface. ignore the synth on Prince's song. ignore the vocals and melody. When You Were Mine definitely sounds like it was built on Catch My Fall.

It's like how Vanilla Ice built that song on the bass line and a bit of keyboard of Under Pressure by Queen and Bowie. It's not exactly the same at all, but it's blatant thievery nonetheless. it's okay to build on someone else's song if u have permission and pay royalties. otherwise it's just plain stealing.

@soulkiss1001 - i take it back. listened to mitch rider's version(sometimes prince collaborated & thought they were referring to a collaboration) - it's stripped down and rocked up. Prince wrote and performed the song first but...

two different songs. When You Were Mine sounds a lot like this when it's got all those layers of sound on top. Once they're stripped...two different songs...but if anybody's stealing they're stealing from Prince.

Mitch Rider literally "copycat" it and named it "When you were mine". Billy Idol is just a music genius. Listen to the 2005 CD, "Devil´s playground", it is just majestic.
