Here was an artist whose voice was an instrument in itself. Miss Sarah was a first class artist on each and every song. Whenever she came to town, you could find me in the audience for each and every performance. I miss you, darlin!
Billie, Ella and Sarah you ca't get any better than those three. I wouldn't dare try to say which one is the best. Thank you ladies for making this world a better place to enjoy musuc.
There has to be a LOVE button for Sarah! And THIS performance especially in UNREAL! As someone else said, this proves there is a God,...indeed,...what a gift from heaven music is (can be) and Sarah certainly is!! ;) Darling, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, me,...Sarah, sing, sing, sing, sing, sing to me/us!! Thank God for recordings!!! Ahh,....
Sarah Vaughan was unique. All her interpretations differ from eachother. Her musicianship is what elevates her performances. My favourite period of her work is the 50's, but she was brilliant to the very end. A genius in the truest sense of the word, with one of the greatest vocal instruments of alltime. Her voice never deteriorated even as she got older. She reigned supreme for five decades at the top of Jazz.. So many classics, even her last album 'Brazilian Romance' is a masterpiece.
@markmarktarmann Sarah Vaughan was a simply fantastic singer. Holding notes long are not only part of gospel music. It is part of jazz, as well. It should surprise noone that black jazz musicians hold their notes long. WE love it!! Some can't appreciate it but that's life!! Sarah gets a 10 in my book and I'm sure most who love jazz will think the same.
@markmarktarmann That's what set Sarah apart from singers like Julie London....who lack "soul." There is no feeling behind the music. It's like listening to a stiff cardboard box sing. One hears the words but where is the "life" behind the sound? LOL!!
@shjakes no i don't. i'm just saying that i personally like the julie london version more and i was shocked about THIS version. thats all. I'm just using my freedom of opinion ^^
Somebody had a version of WHAT NOW MY LOVE...from this concert.....Does anyone know where it is? personally I miss it a lot...I used to listen to it EVERYDAY....it was really inspiring....
@modo203 Here's my take. I like Julie London. She's an underrated singer with limited ranger who did some nice, understated work that compares favorably with other respected and similar vocal talents of her era including June Christy, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford and Chet Baker. Sarah is on another plateau entirely, Her timing, vibrato, range, depth of expression all place her among the greatest singers in the entire history of recorded music.. No contest.
@ajack2boys My thoughts exactly. Sarah is on another plateau entirely from everyone else. The evidence can be found with all those who attempt her style and sound and simply can't compare. Sarah is a world treasure.
@ajack2boys So true! June Christy, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford and Chet Baker and Julie London were great in the limited range category. Ella and Sarah are on another level entirely. The greatest jazz singer is certainly Ella Fitzgerald followed by Sarah Vaughan then Billy Holiday and Anita O'day.
Thank you for posting this. I am in tears not only moved by this brilliant and beautiful singer but recent comments. Sarah still lives in our minds and hearts. Wherever you are Sarah I send you love.
I attended a Jazz Workshop last night and the most incredible compliment I got on the night from a young man was that I sounded so much like Sarah. My repertoire will now have more of her songs. Rachele
can't think of a better way to start my cold winter morning in Detroit, than to listen to this beautiful lady with such a beautiful voice. I remember in1976 during the celebration of this courntys' birth (200 years) and Tom Brokaw ended his program with Sarah singing "America", it was amazing.
i am simply blown away by her voice. my father died many years ago leaving some of or records on vinyl which i never listened to. but i stumbled on her on u tube. I have never heard better artistry. A voice for eternity
Sara owns ANY & EVERY song she EVER sang! Her voice was truly an instrument. My favorite vocalist of all time. She's just simply divine & the greatest- all you need to know that is 2 working ears........
Flawless! Absolutely flawless! There will never be another "Sassy" and no one will ever sing this song as well as Ms. Vaughan did in this video!! Perfect!

I don't dig the vibrato so much, though I have always adored standards by Vaughan, but the key change is impeccable; brilliantly accomplished.
