But in this film it appears to be a small specialized unit, which in WW2, was used because of its high rate of fire and stopping power.

@irishkerry actually, it was more like 7/8 countries against italy and germany and the US against japan. australia and new zealand would have helped against the japanese but they were under british rule back then so they were deployed in europe. their contributions were great; if not them, the thin line holding the germans out of britain would probably have been broken.
