In the US there were experiments of dispatching bats over towns in the hopes that they would take shelter in buildings and have incendiary devices that were attached to them detonate. Eventually nothing came of it because the A-bomb tests were successful which was enough to end the war. It's unfortunate that animals had to die in a war they had not started.

They trained on russian tanks(which used diesel i believe..) and dogs were trained to find the smell of gas, then there would be food under it...and when they smelled the gas the Russians used..yeah they would go straight for the Russian tanks and epicly fail

I saw a documentry on the history channel about this stuff. Sometimes the dogs would bomb their own russian tanks, because the russians trained their dogs on their own tanks and the dogs remembered the diesel fuel smell of thoses tanks, and the germans had gasoline powered tanks (most of them).

Lol this entire operation was such an epic failure. First, they trained the dogs to pull the pin on their collar by rewarding them, so of course the dog would run back to the owner to do this for a reward. Then they thought they were clever by installing an automatic trigger, but they forgot that the dogs recognized the Russian tanks by the smell of their diesel rather than the German gasoline. And they managed to destroy like 50 tanks out of 10,000. Good job, fucking retards..

The way they trained these dogs was to place food under a tank and the dog will look there for food, only in a battle with bomb strapped on back. problem was, they were trained on Russian tanks, so the dogs tended to go under theirs. These were desperate times for russia, they needed everything they had to halt the german advance. some of you say its cruel, but you never were in the circumstances the russian soldiers were in

Tactic largely failed because Russians trained dogs on their own diesal tanks and german tanks were gas and smelled unfamiliar to dogs. Plus battlefield noise scared many dogs. Also, dogs had tendancy to run under the more familiar Russian tanks. However it did work at times 16 German tanks destroyed at Stalingrad by dogs and 12 disabled at Kursk. Once Russians went on offensive use of mine dogs was discontinued. An interestijng and creative tactic, if heartless.

That "assembly" on the dog's back at 0:28 is a mine designed to be attached to a German vehicle as the dogs were trained to run under vehicles and blow up. The practice faded out after the opening stages of the German-Soviet war (thankfully).

This actually did happen. I am a huge ww2 buff particularly in the fighting between the germans and russians on the eastern front. The tactics of using dogs as anti tank weapons did occur during the of Operation Barbarossa from may 1941 to early 1942. It was a move of sheer desperation. It has been reported that Iraqi insurgents attempted this same tactic in 2005 but were unsuccessful. The war between Stalin and Hitler achieved a ferociousness whereby any means of stopping the enemy were used
