  • @teddypel You're welcome

  • Thanks! I intend to ditch Windows all together. I'm burn out on the Gates crew's racket.

  • @hare122275 I was too.

  • @draganciricfox That is too many partitions. You can only have 4. Ubuntu requires 2

  • Please help! I don't have the option to boot alongside the other os! What did I do!!!!!

  • @myiphonerocks1 hmm. Everyone keeps saying that. Open gparted under system > administration. How many partitions does your harddrive have?

  • @thejoesteiger

never mind, i just decided to wipe my hardrive and use linux only, thanks for your help anyways!

  • Thanks so much, lots of videos out there that were confusing but this one was nice and easy to follow and i'm now happily able to dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows :-)

  • @34meridian Thanks. I try a make my videos as easy as possible.

  • @xxmc197xx I agree. If you go to my website JoeSteiger(dot)com, you can search for my post on why i use ubuntu. If it wasn't for vista being so bad, i probably would have never started using Ubuntu.

  • hey i dont have the install side by side option

  • @handstabber Go to system, administration, gparted. Press print screen on your keyboard and email me the picture. joe(at)joesteiger(dot)com

  • @hallsteel36 Refreshing my memory here. You had problem getting wireless to work correct? My guess is you don't have the drivers for your wireless card. Do you have the Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN mini-card? answers.launchpad(dot)net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/

  • error cont:

Alert! /dev/sdf2 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

    Built in shell (ash)

Enter help for a list of built in commands

    (initamfs)-

The commands are baffling me ....any help would be most grateful.

  • @glenn20081965 I am not familiar with that error. You could try reinstalling the boot menu help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD

  • @thejoesteiger Thanks for the advice... just had the same response from an Ubuntu forum...cheers

  • @glenn20081965 Let me know how it goes.

  • I've tried installing several time and always get hte same error. I'm installing along side win 7...I even tried a seperate internal hard drive. The installation goes well and boots up on first installation. It's when I restart again I get the error....windows 7 is ok.

Gave up waiting for route device. Common problems ?)

-Check root delay=(did the system wait long enough?)

  • It doesn't give me the option to dual boot ???

  • @INCReviews how many hard drives do you have?

  • do all your files get erased?

  • @mkpres123 No, not if done correctly. However, it is recommended that you back up your files just in case something goes wrong.

  • mine installed fine but i cannot connect to the internet... :( on the internet icon menu it says "device not ready(firmware not available)" or something like that.

    help?!?

  • @hallsteel36 what computer do you have?

  • Your a very clever guy, carry on with what you are doing!

and thanks for the help :)

  • Thanks!

  • thanks man

  • @alexkushkid you're welcome

  • I thought I was going mad, after I installed Ubuntu I thought I would see a boot screen just like in 5:55. Only after seeing this movie I know I did everything right.

But, the thing is, after the reboot I dont get the Grub screen, instead WIndows7 boots directly. Very frustrating since I really am looking forward using Ubuntu. I cannot find any help on Google. Someone?

  • @alex4allofyou Go back to the cd and select try ubuntu. then go to System>Administration>gparted partition editor. Do you see there that ubuntu was installed. If so, let me know, I'll message you on how we can try to restore the grub. i don't know why it didn't show.

Also, if you are looking for help from someone online, go to ubuntuforums

  • @alex4allofyou try getting EasyBCD for your windows OS and use that to configure and put the second to wait until booting 30 or however much you'd like

  • Ty for video it helped!

  • @Jandor86 I'm glad

  • I have a question. How do I know when to remove the Ubuntu disc from the drive?

  • @theNoahTree After installing, it will ask you to restart your computer, it will go back to the boot screen and say you can remove it.

  • I also do not have the option of install alongside another operating system. what might be the problem?

  • @remudi3 Send me a picture of your hard drive from gparted

  • @thejoesteiger sorry im pretty new to this stuff so whats gparted? haha

  • @remudi3 it's a partitioner. Boot from your ubuntu cd. Select try ubuntu. Go to system, adminstration, gparted. Press print screen on your computer. Send me the picture.

  • @remudi3 press print screen on your keyboard i mean

  • @thejoesteiger where do you want me to send it to you?

  • @remudi3 joe @ joesteiger . com

  • @thejoesteiger hey. I have Windows 7 installed with all my files in the HDD, and then i created a 20 GB new partition where i was planning to install Ubuntu without "damaging" W7 and the files. I believe if a choose to install Ubuntu in a different partition none of the files will be lost, right?

  • @HellKillerPT It shouldn't but you should always backup your files first just in case. You never know.

  • hey im so sorry that happened but how?

  • @1998HALOKILLER huh?

  • Hi I have a problem. I don't have the first option. What could be the cause this?

  • @ioioi210 You mean the install alongside option? Do you have Windows installed? Do you have multiple hard drives?

  • @thejoesteiger Yes, after awhile of googling I found out it was because you can have a max of four partitions and it comes with 4 already... So I'm probably going to have to get rid of one or two...

    Thanks for the help though!

  • Thanks for this great video:) I got Ubuntu installed no problem!

  • @howsthis4ausername I'm glad

  • I have a problem, at 2:19 there is only two options for me to choose from and i can't choose "install alongside other operating systems" Please help!

  • @AsianCheeseToaster How is your hard drive partitioned?

  • @AsianCheeseToaster I ask this because I noticed that if there is blank space on the hard drive, it doesn't have that option.

  • @thejoesteiger I just installed it via windows. Thanks anyways...

  • hi joe! thx for your tutorial... I've made everything like you described in the video... when i had to partition the siz of diske, I left about 220 GB for Windows 7, and 102 GB for Ubuntu... installation went okay... exactly everything the same as you described... but when I did restarting... I haven't got the same thing as you do... I don't have a choice to pick up whether I'm gonna use Ubuntu or Windows... Ubuntu goes up...

  • @lomodeedee hmm, that's weird. Check with your ubuntu cd to make sure windows 7 wasnt deleted

  • @thejoesteiger

i've just tried with the recovery cd for win 7 32 bit I've downloaded... can you imagine, it loaded well, found windows 7, went into repairing process and after restarting Ubuntu is again here! I'm using fujitsu siemens xa 3530...

  • @lomodeedee In Ubuntu, try going to applications>accessories>terminal. Type sudo update-grub

    Hit enter.

  • @thejoesteiger i did it... got this: deborah@deborah-AMILO-Notebook-Xa-3530:~$ sudo update-grub [sudo] password for deborah: Generating grub.cfg ... a Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-24-generic-pae Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-24-generic-pae Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin done deborah@deborah-AMILO-Notebook-Xa-3530:~$ a a: command not found deborah@deborah-AMILO-Notebook-Xa-3530:~$
  • Generating grub.cfg ... a Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-24-generic-pae Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-24-generic-pae Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin done deborah@deborah-AMILO-Notebook-Xa-3530:~$ a a: command not found deborah@deborah-AMILO-Notebook-Xa-3530:~$
  • ok, did!

  • @thejoesteiger ubuntu is still here after restarting... (Generating grub.cfg ...

    Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-24-generic-pae

    Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-24-generic-pae

    Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin

    done)

  • @lomodeedee Can you give me the output of

    sudo fdisk -l

  • @thejoesteiger i'm obviously doing something wrong cuz i'm getting all the time: > sudo fdisk -|

    > p.s i've found dvd with win7, did repairing, and again nothing... seems like there is something related to my 2HDisks... sorry for bothering so much...

  • @lomodeedee what was the output of sudo fdisk -| You have two harddrives?

  • @thejoesteiger yes, that's the reason i sent you previously info about my laptop... seems i've made wrong installation... is it possible that it could be because 'the installer (GUI) does not recognize every time both disks so the option in which the grub goes to the MBR of the first disk and the installation to another. ' i've found this answer in correspondence with a programmer that installed Ubuntu as dual boot with Vista on my laptop recently. then i went Ubuntu, nothing worked properly :(

  • @lomodeedee oh, I am sorry. I don't know how two hard drive works. If you go to ubuntuforumsdotorg. they may be able to help you. Sorry I was no help.

  • @thejoesteiger oh, you are a lot of help, and so patient... i just don't get it how to recover or repair my windows again...

  • @thejoesteiger i didn't got anything as output...

  • @lomodeedee that's weird

  • @thejoesteiger

hey thx.. fujitsu siemens xa 3530... i just tried recovery disk I've downloaded (win 7 32bit, i have win 7 32bit, ultimate)... and recovery cd found Windows 7, did the process, and after restarting, my Ubuntu is again here)... so I'm sure that Windows are on HD, because my drivers in Ubuntu are working great... I did Ubuntu installation 3 weeks ago, but I couldn't use touchpad and lot's of stuff then I switched again to Windows... but would like to have dual boot...

  • @thejoesteiger sorry for two similar answers...

  • Thanks for the tutorial.

  • @JayCeeAich thanks

  • which is okay with me, but I have few tools I wanna use in Windows and iPod, so... Is there any chance I can get this option as you have described in 7:14 minute... yes, i didn't make a reboot disk for windows 7, stupid of me, I know... but i know I haven't overwrite them, windows are on disk...

    Thanks in advance...

    lost girl...

  • @lomodeedee I don't know what you mean
