It's weird... I just recently downloaded Empire Total War, and chose to play as the Austrian Empire for the Grand Campaign; anyways, the first thing I decided to do was avoid the Ottomans and invade Venice and Upper-Italy along with the Southern-Slavic States... which seems to be exactly what the Austrian Empire did in reality. o_o
@ShkatuIka I recently downloaded Europa Universalis, started at around 1580, automatically declared war on the Turks, and annexed, Croatia, Slavonia, and a bunch of other Hungarian regions. Declared war on them again, and took Hum (Bosnia), Serbia, Pecs, and 1 or 2 more Hungarian regions. I'm scared to declare war on them again because I have high infamy and Venice threatened to declare war on me if I declare war on the Turks D:
@Swertzer Yeah Serbia is cool I wanna try sarma and rakiju one day D:
But did you guys know you guys were happy in the Austrian Empire between 1718–1739. The population doubled there and they modernized....but then the Turks came back, and the Austrians were forced to give back Serbia to Turks and retreat back to the Banat and Syrmia. Around 40,000 Serb families joined them in the retreat.
Yes,but did you know after the 1739,all promises Emperor Leopold made simply fell?
Serbian schools were forbidden(Serbs called Russian teachers instead and studied Russian),religion also, many converted from orthodoxy into catholic(in order to be accepted in society),many served in the army and many, many Serbs died in the name of Austria on many fronts(you have millions of books out there),against Napoleon,Prussia and Turkey.
The sad part is that many Serbs were serving Turkey also.
As an European History student, I have discovered the works of Prince Metternich and have grown to respect the Austrian Empire greatly. Cheers from the United States!
Not that I study it in any depth, but I was under the impression Metternich was a reactionary who postponed the formation of a unified German State inevitably ensuring the Prussian dominance of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

@LeopoldHabsburg I am in Virtual nations, but Checholsovakia conquered Austria there, I wanted to make the Austrian Empire there also. in eRepublik, also, but the problem is the very few Population.
Croatia did the biggest mistake in history when Croatia declared to go out from Austria-Hungary, and went to union with Serbs, and other South Slavs...
Respect for the Austrian Empire, but VERONA = ITALIA.
Every nostalgy regarding fifty years of oppression (until 1866) is not supported by rationality and history. If anyone wishes to be a servant, under a militar dominion of a foreign country, is totally free to express his feelings. On the other hand, the condition of slavery of citizens subject to an army of 120000 soldiers, placed in a single city and its surroundings, can't bring good memories with itself.
@QuattroGVR There was no 'oppression' - it's a big myth invented by the fascists who wrote history in Italy. Under the Austrians north-east Italy received excellent public services and enjoyed a better standard of living than when it was annexed by Piedmont/Italy later on. Only small number of middle class intellectuals gave a shit about a united Italy in 1840s-50s - most people were happy to be part of a great empire.
@marcusantonius90 Greetings. Seems like you don't appreciate our country, or you've chosen a wrong nick. Anyway, I ensure you that the cliché of fascist propaganda doesn't fit with the question. The militar rulers improved infrastructures, built railways (mainly for troops) and admirable fortresses, also let local aristocracy and clergy flatter them in exchange for the permission to keep the population under disciplinate obedience."Nationalist" Dissent wasn't tolerated, as it's well known.
@marcusantonius90 Respect for glorious ages is granted, but the concept of Austrian Empire belongs to only one of the two sides of the Alps, in a specifical cultural context. Again, I don't blame no one for nostalgies that I consider out of history, in fact I don't miss the times when Vindobona was created by the Romans.
Merci Clémenceau d’avoir jeté par terre cet empire minable et ignoble, responsable de la 1ière guerre Mondiale. Thank you Mr Clémenceau for having crashed down this despicable and ignoble empire, responsible for the first WW
And know, there's another Austrian anthem using the same melody, the one used during the first Republic and Austrofascism! So get to work once again Daine! ;)

@Citylife10
(I am talking about the 40k Serbs that left, after Maria Theresa took power in AUS.)
Not only because of the Turks, but diseases also, and bad luck, main Austrian general died.(can't remember his name)
So many Serbs on Austrian side were fighting with the Serbs on the Turkish side.
But that time has passed,we live in peace and let's hope that it will stay like that as long as we live! :)
ps.A friendly advice, don't drink to much of rakia.:D(from personal experience)
